Development of an integral system test for image-guided radiotherapy.

An integral system test was developed to determine the precision and accuracy of an image-guided radiotherapy system involving an x-ray volumetric imaging device mounted onto the gantry of a medical linear accelerator. The test was designed to interrogate the system components as a whole without deconstructing the individual sources of error. The integral system test was based on the imaging of an unambiguous stationary object in the treatment position and so took no account of patient related errors. An array of micromosfets interspersed within slices of a tissue equivalent phantom was develo

The negative sigmoid loss for controlling false positive rate in osteolytic lesion segmentation.

Multiple Myeloma (MM) is a malignancy that is commonly associated with the development of osteolytic lesions. To support MM diagnosis, low-dose Computed Tomography (CT) is commonly used for lesion localization, but manually evaluating CT scans can be time-consuming and prone to error. Although deep learning methods have delivered promising results in supporting lesion detection, they are likely to produce false positive findings, hindering their usability in clinical practice. To address this, we trained a 2D U-Net on annotated lesions (positive patches) in combination with images of bone tiss

DeepOptimalNet: optimized deep learning model for early diagnosis of pancreatic tumor classification in CT imaging.

Computed Tomography (CT) imaging captures detailed cross-sectional images of the pancreas and surrounding structures and provides valuable information for medical professionals. The classification of pancreatic CT images presents significant challenges due to the complexities of pancreatic diseases, especially pancreatic cancer. These challenges include subtle variations in tumor characteristics, irregular tumor shapes, and intricate imaging features that hinder accurate and early diagnosis. Image noise and variations in image quality also complicate the analysis. To address these classificati

Acquisition and Reconstruction Techniques for Coronary CT Angiography: Current Status and Trends over the Past Decade.

Coronary CT angiography (CCTA) has been widely used as a noninvasive modality for accurate assessment of coronary artery disease (CAD) in clinical settings. However, the following limitations of CCTA remain issues of interest: motion, stair-step, and blooming artifacts; suboptimal image noise; ionizing radiation exposure; administration of contrast medium; and complex imaging workflow. Various acquisition and reconstruction techniques have been introduced over the past decade to overcome these limitations. Low-tube-voltage acquisition using a high-output x-ray tube can reasonably reduce the co

Deep Rib Fracture Instance Segmentation and Classification From CT on the RibFrac Challenge.

Rib fractures are a common and potentially severe injury that can be challenging and labor-intensive to detect in CT scans. While there have been efforts to address this field, the lack of large-scale annotated datasets and evaluation benchmarks has hindered the development and validation of deep learning algorithms. To address this issue, the RibFrac Challenge was introduced, providing a benchmark dataset of over 5,000 rib fractures from 660 CT scans, with voxel-level instance mask annotations and diagnosis labels for four clinical categories (buckle, nondisplaced, displaced, or segmental). T

Deep learning segmentation-based bone removal from computed tomography of the brain improves subdural hematoma detection.

PURPOSE: Timely identification of intracranial blood products is clinically impactful, however the detection of subdural hematoma (SDH) on non-contrast CT scans of the head (NCCTH) is challenging given interference from the adjacent calvarium. This work explores the utility of a NCCTH bone removal algorithm for improving SDH detection. METHODS: A deep learning segmentation algorithm was designed/trained for bone removal using 100 NCCTH. Segmentation accuracy was evaluated on 15 NCCTH from the same institution and 22 NCCTH from an independent external dataset using quantitative overlap analysi

A Review of the Applications of Dual-Energy CT in Acute Neuroimaging.

Dual-energy computed tomography (CT) is a promising tool with increasing availability and multiple emerging and established clinical applications in neuroradiology. With its ability to allow characterization of materials based on their differential attenuation when imaged at two different energy levels, dual-energy CT can help identify the composition of brain, neck, and spinal components. Virtual monoenergetic imaging allows a range of simulated single energy-level reconstructions to be created with postprocessing. Low-energy reconstructions can aid identification of edema, ischemia, and subt

Computed Tomography Angiographic Assessment of Acute Chest Pain.

Acute chest pain is a leading cause of Emergency Department visits. Computed tomography angiography plays a vital diagnostic role in such cases, but there are several common challenges associated with the imaging of acute chest pain, which, if unrecognized, can lead to an inconclusive or incorrect diagnosis. These imaging challenges fall broadly into 3 categories: (1) image acquisition, (2) image interpretation (including physiological and pathologic mimics), and (3) result communication. The aims of this review are to describe and illustrate the most common challenges in the imaging of acute

Artificial intelligence for detecting traumatic intracranial haemorrhage with CT: A workflow-oriented implementation.

The objective of this study was to assess the performance of an artificial intelligence (AI) algorithm in detecting intracranial haemorrhages (ICHs) on non-contrast CT scans (NCCT). Another objective was to gauge the department's acceptance of said algorithm. Surveys conducted at three and nine months post-implementation revealed an increase in radiologists' acceptance of the AI tool with an increasing performance. However, a significant portion still preferred an additional physician given comparable cost. Our findings emphasize the importance of careful software implementation into a robust
