Parent-Adolescent Reciprocity in a Conflictual Situation Predicts Peer Interaction in Adolescents With ASD.

Parent-child reciprocity plays a signicant role in shaping children's social interaction skills. The development of conflict management skills throughout childhood and adolescence impacts the individual's social adjustment. The increase in conflictual interaction with one's parents during adolescence affects the transformation of parent-adolescent interaction into a more mutual, equal relationship. Adolescents with ASD and their parents may struggle in this type of interaction due to the adolescents' social and regulatory impairments, in addition to their dependence on their parents' involveme

Assessing an Online Patient Decision Aid about Upper Extremity Reconstructive Surgery for Cervical Spinal Cord Injury: Pilot Testing Knowledge, Decisional Conflict, and Acceptability.

UNLABELLED: Background. While nerve and tendon transfer surgery can restore upper extremity function and independence after midcervical spinal cord injury, few individuals (∼14%) undergo surgery. There is limited information regarding these complex and time-sensitive treatment options. Patient decision aids (PtDAs) convey complex health information and help individuals make informed, preference-consistent choices. The purpose of this study is to evaluate a newly created PtDA for people with spinal cord injury who are considering options to optimize upper extremity function. Methods. The PtDA w

Etiology and treatment of motion sickness: a review.

The role of vision in motion sickness has often been either exaggerated or ignored. After examining some early theories of motion sickness, this review discusses the sensory conflict theory and visual aspects of motion sickness. A wide range of preventative measures, both optometric and non-optometric, are presented to give the vision care specialist some practical solutions to the problem of motion distress.

Self-Care Strategies of Emergency Nurses in Armed Conflict Areas: Experiences From the Field.

BACKGROUND: Emergency nurses working in conflict zones face extraordinary psychological, physical, and ethical challenges in environments characterised by violence, resource scarcity, and moral distress. Despite increasing recognition of core competencies in emergency nursing for armed conflict contexts, self-care strategies that enable sustained professional practice remain underexplored in the literature. OBJECTIVE: The primary objective of this study was to explore the lived experiences and self-care strategies of nurses working in healthcare settings along the Saudi-Yemeni border. The sec

Self-care for maternal and reproductive health in conflict settings: qualitative case study in Nuba Mountains, Sudan.

INTRODUCTION: Self-care is a critical component of Reproductive, Maternal, and Neonatal Health (RMNH), offering women the knowledge, skills, and autonomy needed for well-being throughout the reproductive cycle. This paper explores the significance of self-care in conflict-affected regions, where access to formal healthcare is limited. Such areas place pregnant women at higher risk due to increased incidents of adverse events during pregnancy and childbirth. Self-care interventions have the potential to enhance access to quality healthcare services. METHODS: Employing a qualitative approach, t

Anatomical observations during microvascular decompression for idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (with correlations between topography of pain and site of the neurovascular conflict). Prospective study in a series of 579 patients.

BACKGROUND: The Micro-Vascular Decompression (MVD) procedure - developed for conservative treatment of idiopathic Trigeminal Neuralgia (TN) is based on the NeuroVascular Conflict (NVC) theory. Although MVD has become very popular over the last twenty years, its principles and value remain controversial. Detailed anatomical observations during posterior fossa exploration in patients with idiopathic TN may help to understand better the role of NVCs. METHOD: In this article, the authors report the anatomical observations made under the operating microscope in a consecutive series of 579 patients

"If I wasn't a pastor, I would be telling them about condoms, contraceptives and PrEP"-conflicts, dilemmas and credibility: qualitative insights from religious leaders and the promotion of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) in Eswatini.

BACKGROUND: Religious leaders (RLs) form an influential group in Eswatini. This study explores their understanding and acceptance of pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), with a view to improve PrEP service delivery for those who would benefit from PrEP the most. METHODS: We conducted online and in-person in-depth interviews with (n=26) purposefully selected RLs (n=12 female and n=14 male) from Eswatini. Data were managed using NVivo V.12 and coded inductively. We used thematic analysis to analyse our data and structure our findings across the individual, interpersonal, community and institutional

"Rationality" enhancement through anodal tDCS over the right ventrolateral prefrontal cortex.

Experimental findings challenge classical economic theories by demonstrating that people are not solely self-interested but also have social preferences, such as fairness and reciprocity, that often conflict with self-interest motives. An ongoing debate examines whether social preferences arise automatically (requiring deliberate actions to ensure economic self-interest) or require cognitive control (implying that self-interest is the default motive and must be inhibited). Two distinct cognitive-control brain regions, each with potentially unique inhibitory functions, have been implicated in m

Coherence and content of conflict-based narratives: associations to family risk and maladjustment.

This study examined the role of structural and content characteristics of children's conflict-based narratives (coherence, positive and aggressive themes) in the association between early childhood family risk and children's internalizing and externalizing problems in a sample of 193 children (97 girls, 96 boys) aged 3 to 5 years (M = 3.85, SD = .48). Parents participated in an interview on family related risk factors; teachers and parents completed the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire; children completed conflict-based narratives based on the MacArthur Story Stem Battery (MSSB). Together, alongside or against each other? A qualitative content analysis on the intersystem sensitivity of coaches and physiotherapists in German elite sport support teams.

This study examines the systemic dynamic of collaboration and the role of intersystem sensitivity between coaches and physiotherapists in German elite sport support teams. Based on a heuristic that integrates theories of society, conflict, and professionalisation within the framework of Niklas Luhmann's sociological systems theory, the study employs qualitative content analysis of expert interviews with representatives of both professional groups (N = 45). The analysis identifies key themes, conflict potentials and avenues for optimisation in intersystem interaction. The findings suggest that

Parent-child relationships in Latinx families: The role of immigrant concentration, residential stability, and generational status.

Prior research links neighborhood immigrant concentration and residential stability to individual health outcomes. It remains unclear how neighborhood social organization extend to family functioning among immigrant families. Expanding the scope of research on neighborhoods and family relationships, this study draws on data from 1417 Latinx families (Myouth age  = 10.19 years, SDyouth age  = 3.34) to: (1) examine associations between neighborhood immigrant concentration, residential stability, and parent-child warmth and conflict in Latinx families, and (2) test whether associations vary by fa

Youth Reentry from Prison and Family Violence Perpetration: the Salience of Family Dynamics.

The central role of family within the process of juvenile reentry from a term of incarceration has been well documented by researchers and practitioners alike. However, family violence among previously incarcerated youth remains alarmingly high across the United States. Drawing from differential coercion and social support theory, we examine how family dynamics may simultaneously promote and/or inhibit family violence perpetration among youth undergoing the process of reentry. Four waves of panel data from the male-only youth subsample of the Serious and Violent Offender Reentry Initiative are

More pain, more gain: Blocking the opioid system boosts adaptive cognitive control.

The ability to adaptively increase cognitive control in response to cognitive challenges is crucial for goal-directed behavior. Recent findings suggest that aversive arousal triggers adaptive increases of control, but the neurochemical mechanisms underlying these effects remain unclear. Given the known contributions of the opioid system to hedonic states, we investigated whether blocking this system increases adaptive control modulations. To do so, we conducted a double-blind, placebo-controlled psychopharmacological study (n=52 females) involving a Stroop-like task. Specifically, we assessed

Steeling Ourselves: Intragroup Communication while Anticipating Intergroup Contact Evokes Defensive Intergroup Perceptions.

Two experiments investigated the role of intragroup communication in intergroup conflict (de-)escalation. Experiment 1 examined the effects of intragroup communication (vs. individual thought) and anticipated face-to-face intergroup contact (vs. no anticipated face-to-face intergroup contact). The group discussions of stigmatized group members who anticipated face-to-face intergroup contact revolved more around intergroup hostility. This boosted ingroup identification and increased social creativity but also led to steeling (a hardening of perceived intergroup relations). In Experiment 2, new

Compensatory effects of emotion avoidance in adult development.

Although compensatory strategies can offset regulatory losses that occur in later adulthood, they often break down under conditions of over-activation. Two emotion regulation tasks examined compensatory effects related to attachment classification (AC). Study 1 examined emotional Stroop performance in young (17-39) and old adults (60-89). Among the elder, participants with dismissing AC showed increased response times (RTs) for anger and fear words, whereas participants with secure AC showed increased RTs for joy words. Participants with anxious AC responded slowest overall. In Study 2, heart

Pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression.

This article examines the intervening pathways linking parental divorce with adolescent depression, using both cross-sectional and prospective data from a study of high school students in the Boston metropolitan area. Overall, findings reveal that parental divorce is linked with adolescent depression in two ways: (1) it is a source of numerous secondary problems and stresses that are causally related to depression, and (2) it alters youths' reactivity to these stresses, in some cases enhancing, but in other cases mitigating, their depressive effects. Analyses demonstrated the central role of e

[Ethical dilemmas in the field of genetics].

After a brief introduction, the role of medical genetics in modern ethical conflicts is emphasized. International working approaches are discussed in an attempt to solve medical conflicts. The studies proposed by Wertz and Fletcher are reviewed in order to assess the strength of consensus on various working approaches. A brief discussion evaluates working approaches to ethical problems in genetics. This discussion also focuses on genetic counselling and screening questions regarding pertinent hereditary diseases. Final considerations point out the demanding role played by the modern geneticist

The "Yellow Fever Plot": Biological Warfare in the American Civil War.

The American Civil War was unprecedented in both its brutality and bloodshed. Disease and the threat of biological warfare played a key role in the conflict, most notably in a Confederate plot to create an epidemic of yellow fever in the Union. Other instances of biological warfare included the Confederate's hopes that endemic diseases would offer a military advantage, the poisoning of wells, accusations of the deliberate spread of smallpox, and even unsubstantiated rumors of entomological warfare. In this narrative review, we examine the role that biological warfare played in the American Civ

Discovery of a Novel Mutation in the REN Gene in Patient With Chronic Progressive Kidney Disease of Unknown Etiology Presenting With Acute Spontaneous Carotid Artery Dissection.

Most dissections of extracranial arteries involve some mechanical stress or connective tissue abnormalities. In the absence of these disorders, determining the etiology is challenging. Genetic factors may play an important pathophysiologic role. We report on a 36-year-old male with the right internal carotid artery dissection and a novel genetic variant in the REN gene. Our report offers evidence that mutations in the REN gene could have pathogenic role in arterial dissection. The subject gave written informed consent for the publication of this case report. The authors declare no conflict of

The mediation effect of the inferior-parietal cortex and globus pallidus on the relationship between family conflict and major depressive disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Family conflict is an important risk factor for major depressive disorder (MDD) and is associated with structural alterations in the brain. However, it is unclear whether structural alterations associated with family conflict would contribute to depression. This study aims to investigate the neuroimaging characteristics that connect family conflict with depression. METHODS: This study included 54 healthy controls and 53 antidepressant-free patients with MDD. Both groups completed the Beck Depression Inventory-II, the simplified Chinese version of the Family Environment Scale, and t
