The things that make us: self and object attachment in hoarding and compulsive buying-shopping disorder.

Excessive or maladaptive object attachment is the defining feature of Hoarding Disorder (HD) and the acquisition process within Compulsive Buying-Shopping Disorder (CBSD). In recent years, the relationship of object attachment within HD and CBSD to individual's self-concept has become the focus of direct research. On the basis of this literature, it seems that an underdeveloped, ambivalent, or discrepant self-concept could be a vulnerability for dysfunctional object attachment behavior. Further, the importance of objects in buttressing and extending self-concept, both individually and in relat

A modified mark test for own-body recognition in pig-tailed macaques (Macaca nemestrina).

Classic mirror self-recognition mark tests involve familiarizing the subject with its mirror image, surreptitiously applying a mark on the subject's eyebrow, nose, or ear, and measuring self-directed behaviors toward the mark. For many non-human primate species, however, direct gaze at the face constitutes an aggressive and threatening signal. It is therefore possible that monkeys fail the mark test because they do not closely inspect their faces in a mirror and hence they have no expectations about their physical appearance. In the current study, we prevented two pig-tailed macaques (Macaca n

The Impact of Trauma-Sensitive Yoga on Persons Who Are Incarcerated: Identifying, Understanding, and Controlling Emotions.

BACKGROUND: While persons who are incarcerated have high rates of previous trauma, further traumatization can result from the experience of incarceration. The inability to effectively process trauma can lead to maladaptive behavior, a serious concern for correctional administrators. Acquiring the skills to regulate emotions and mitigate feelings of impulsivity help persons who are incarcerated take responsibility for their actions to make better decisions, simultaneously encouraging prosocial behavior, decreasing institutional misconduct, and reducing behaviors that place one at risk for repea

Childhood emotional maltreatment and adolescent restrictive eating: A longitudinal structural equation modeling and network analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Childhood emotional abuse and neglect are established risk factors for adolescent disordered eating, yet the mechanisms linking early emotional maltreatment to restrictive eating remain unclear. Using a dual-level framework integrating construct-level pathways with symptom-level interactions, this longitudinal study examined the psychological mechanisms linking childhood emotional maltreatment to restrictive eating and the moderating role of self-concept clarity. METHODS: Adolescents were recruited at baseline (N = 1245) from a public secondary school in southwestern China, of whom

Psychosocial antecedents of hostility in persons with coronary heart disease.

Although it is known that hostility precedes coronary heart disease (CHD), little is known about factors that influence the development and progression of hostile characteristics. The relations among hostility, self-esteem, self-concept, and psychosocial residual were conceptualized within the modeling and role-modeling theoretical framework and examined in a sample of 85 persons with CHD. There were significant associations between all variables. Regression analyses revealed that self-esteem, mistrust residual, isolation residual, and self-concept contributed significantly, accounting for 31%

Confidence in one-self and confidence in one's own body: The revival of an old paradigm for anorexia nervosa.

Impaired interoceptive function represents an important variable in the psychopathology of anorexia nervosa (AN) and is thought to be influenced by maladaptive schemas grounded on early intimate interactions. However, the role of the different psychological processes involved in the interoceptive function has been poorly assessed in AN. We aimed to investigate the associations between adult insecure attachment, interoceptive processes, and psychopathology. One hundred and fifty participants with AN completed self-report questionnaires: the Multidimensional Assessment of Interoceptive Awareness

Considering the negatively formed identity: Relationships between negative identity and problematic psychosocial beliefs.

INTRODUCTION: Developing a firm sense of identity is a critical developmental task in adolescence and emerging adulthood, but little or no empirical research exists regarding individuals who firmly form negative identities and psychosocial beliefs. This study examined the formation of negative identities in youth and its association with psychosocial beliefs in terms of variable-oriented psychosocial facets (i.e., dichotomous beliefs, cynicism, and social distrust) and person-oriented psychosocial profiles. METHODS: A total of 2313 young Japanese people (70.9% were females) aged 18-25 years a

Benefits of belonging: experimental manipulation of social inclusion to enhance psychological and physiological health parameters.

OBJECTIVE: Acute changes in social belonging are important triggers for alterations in health and well-being, yet research has emphasised the negative effects of 'exclusion' at the expense of evaluating the potentially positive effects of 'inclusion'. This study examined the impact of acute belonging on physiological and psychological outcomes. DESIGN AND MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: A healthy population (N = 138) were randomly allocated to 'included' or 'excluded' conditions. Condition-dependent differences in pre/during-task heart rate and pre/post-task self-reports of negative/positive mood, and

The relationship of post-event processing to self-evaluation of performance in social anxiety.

Socially anxious and control participants engaged in a social interaction with a confederate and then wrote about themselves or the other person (i.e., self-focused post-event processing [SF-PEP] vs. other-focused post-event processing [OF-PEP]) and completed several questionnaires. One week later, participants completed measures concerning their evaluation of their performance in the social interaction and the degree to which they engaged in post-event processing (PEP) during the week. Socially anxious individuals evaluated their performance in the social interaction more poorly than control

Healthcare self-management support of stroke patients after discharge: A conceptual analysis using Rodger's evolutionary approach.

AIM(S): To explore the meaning of healthcare self-management support for post-discharged stroke patients. METHOD: Rodgers' evolutionary approach was used to identify antecedents, attributes, related terms, surrogate terms and consequences. DATA SOURCE: Literature from 2012 to 2022 was searched from MEDLINE, CINAHL, PsycINFO and Google Scholar. RESULTS: Three antecedents preceded healthcare self-management support for post-discharged stroke patients: loss of inpatient support, preparedness for self-management and presence of self-management support. Self-Estimated Attractiveness: Demographic and Personality Correlates.

This paper examines psychological correlates of self-assessed physical attractiveness (SAPA) across two studies. It tests ideas from evolutionary theory, namely that SAPA is related to a number of demographic, ideological, and personality variables that are status-signaling mechanisms related to success in the workplace. Participants rated their attractiveness on a 0-100 scale and completed measures of demographics, ideology, optimism, and six workplace personality traits (High Potential Trait Indicator). Study 1 (N = 799) included a Dominance, Influence, Steadiness, Compliance-based behaviora

Integrative model for self-perception of well-being in cancer.

PURPOSE: Continual illness uncertainty can affect how people perceive and interpret their well-being. Some cognitive and spiritual factors may be involved in the management of disruptive thoughts and emotions that can emerge during the experience of cancer. MATERIAL AND METHODS: An evidence-based integrative model was developed to evaluate and show the role that mindfulness, acceptance, self-efficacy, uncertainty, meaning, and purpose in life play in the self-perception of well-being in individuals with cancer. This evidence-based integrative model was conducted using relevant and selected st

Body dysmorphic disorder: case report.

The desire for self-mutilation in the absence of any discernible psychopathology is relatively rare. Self-mutilation is most commonly a manifestation of an underlying psychopathology such as depression, schizophrenia, personality disorder, transexuality, body dysmorphic disorder and factitious disorder. In this article, a case in which a 29-year-old single Kenyan lady of African origin demanded a surgical operation to modify and reduce the size of her external genitalia is presented. Although female genital mutilation is still widespread in the country, this case is of interest in that the wom

The expanding classroom trends and issues in postgraduate medicine. Why self-assessment?

Self-assessment can provide more than a direction for independent study and credit toward recertification. It can also provide an effective learning experience if the instruments are designed to serve an instructional purpose as well as the more traditional measurement function. Based on existing research, the characteristics of self-assessment instruments--questioning, controlling attention, elucidating objectives, evoking performance, and assessing outcomes--can enhance the learning and retention of new material.

The social self: Categorisation of family members examined through the self-bias effect in new mothers.

Self-concept is the basis for many cognitive and behavioural processes, such as the processing of self-related information (e.g. one's own face, one's own name) and the categorisation of people into various social groups (e.g. self vs. other, family vs. non-family). Previous research suggests that one's self-concept is not only construed from individual characteristics but also from one's social experiences and group memberships. Thus, important life experiences such as childbirth and becoming a parent have significant impacts on one's self-concept and subsequently influence the categorisation

[Dignity and respect for privacy].

Privacy is of paramount importance for building and maintaining self-esteem, an essential component of dignity. Defined as a space for the 'self', it is threatened by illness and healthcare interventions. For dignity to be preserved rather than violated, care must respect this space that is necessary for the individual; in other words, access to and sharing of this space must be negotiated. The carer who becomes intimate thus ceases to be a threat. For their part, they must in turn negotiate the non-threatening opening up of a part of their own privacy. Three key concepts of contemporary socia

The institutional stance enables key insights into problems of selfhood and meaningfulness.

The notion of institutional stance clarifies existential problems. The institutional stance enabled the ancients to view society as stably organized and to rather easily find their place in it. Societal changes gradually complicated the pursuit of self-knowledge in this fashion, and the meaning of life emerged as a problem in the 1800s as Western civilization transformed its institutions.

Association Between Self-Perceived Mate Value and Self-Esteem: A Meta-Analysis.

Self-perceived mate value (SPMV) is the perceived desirability of the person as a mate. The relationship between SPMV and self-esteem has been reported in many studies, but how much and why these two variables are associated has not been well explored. The present meta-analysis examines the association between self-esteem and SPMV and the potential reasons for its variability. The analysis included 23 records (26 datasets, N = 11,837) published till December 2025. The findings revealed a strong positive association between SPMV and self-esteem (r = 0.512, 95% CI = [0.467, 0.553], p < 0.001). M
