While 10% of the U.S. population are afflicted with a rare disease, patients with a rare disease can have a difficult time finding a provider or useful information. Patients with rare diseases are often frustrated by lack of knowledge from their provider, lack of satisfaction with their provider, and lack of available time with their provider. Social connections and networks can be a useful tool for patients with rare diseases to seek and maintain support and information. For this study, a specific rare disease's (Ehlers-Danlos syndrome) support groups in a moderately sized metropolitan area w

BACKGROUND: Patients struggling with rare diseases may face challenges caused by care providers being unfamiliar with their condition. The life span of people with rare diseases may be the same as that of healthy people, but their quality of life is different. Patients with chronic pain are constantly looking for ways to mitigate their pain. Pain killers are not a permanent solution. In addition to the medical and nonmedical costs of rare diseases for both patients and health care providers, there is a need for sustainable sources of information that are available to help with pain and improve

When a pathology is diagnosed at the birth of a child, the parents are confronted with an overwhelming life ordeal they have to face. A discussion group for these mothers and fathers of newborn babies who have needed a digestive stoma allows them to discuss their daily lives and share common concerns, to be reassured by the difficulties encountered, to gain confidence in the care provided and to project themselves into the future more serenely.

BACKGROUND: Despite the disabling nature of eating disorders (EDs), many individuals with ED symptoms do not receive appropriate mental health care. Internet-based interventions have potential to reduce the unmet needs by providing easily accessible health care services.
OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an Internet-based intervention for individuals with ED symptoms, called "Featback." In addition, the added value of different intensities of therapist support was investigated.
METHODS: Participants (N=354) were aged 16 years or older with self-reported ED sympt

OBJECTIVES: To determine whether an online support tool can impact anxiety in women experiencing an abnormal mammogram.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We developed an online support system using the Comprehensive Health Enhancement Support System (CHESS) designed for women experiencing an abnormal mammogram as a model. Our trial randomized 130 of these women to online support (the intervention group) or to a list of five commonly used Internet sites (the comparison group). Surveys assessed anxiety and breast cancer worry, and patient satisfaction at three important clinical time points: when women we

Although problem gambling is becoming more prevalent, research shows that many problem gamblers do not seek help. Online social support forums have become an increasingly popular option for receiving support for problem gambling. Few researchers have explored how participants within these forums interact, or what is supportive about participation in online communities. Melding netnography (ethnographic approaches online), discourse analysis, and ethnomethodology, we analyzed the discursive interactions of self-identified problem gamblers on an online forum. We report on the characteristics of

OBJECTIVE: Most patients with implantable cardioverter defibrillators (ICDs) adjust well to living with the device; however, some experience difficulties. Support groups assist in coping with the psychologic effects of living with an ICD. The study's aim was to examine acceptability of the in-person attendees of an ICD support group that was cast on the Internet.
SAMPLE: A patient satisfaction survey describing the participants' experience was used as a measure of acceptability in this non-experimental, survey, pilot study.
METHODS: The survey assessed reactions of the in-person participants

CONTENT: Results of the German part of a European multicenter study on the effectiveness and practicability of an internet-based self-help program (SHG self-help guide) in bulimia nervosa (BN).
METHOD: The internet-based program SHG builds on the principles of cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and comprises seven cumulative therapeutic steps. Twenty-two women with BN made use of the program over a period of six months. The patients were supported by three evaluation interviews and a once-weekly email contact with a female psychologist. BACKGROUND: Celiac disease is a common disorder (up to 0.7%); however, it is uncommonly diagnosed in the United States.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to determine physician awareness of celiac disease.
DESIGN: Surveys completed by 2,440 (47%) of 5,191 patients in a support group were analyzed for frequency of diagnosis by physician specialties. Questionnaires were then sent to primary care physicians (PCPs) (n=132) in a southern California county to assess knowledge of celiac disease.
RESULTS: In patient surveys, only 11% were diagnosed by PCPs (internists and family physicians) versus 65% by gastro

OBJECTIVE: Many patients with bulimia nervosa find it hard to access evidence-based treatment such as cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). The aim of the current study was to evaluate the feasibility and efficacy of a novel CD-ROM-based cognitive-behavioral multimedia self-help intervention for the treatment of bulimia nervosa.
METHOD: Patients with bulimia nervosa referred to a catchment area-based eating disorder service were offered eight sessions of a novel CD-ROM cognitive-behavioral self-help treatment without any added therapist input. We report here the take-up and drop-out rates and e

The legalization and availability of new forms of gambling are increasing in most Western countries. This trend has contributed to the fact that more individuals are developing gambling problems. As a result, there is a need for effective treatments. Although gambling treatment dates several decades, few empirically supported treatments for pathological gambling have been developed. This critical review includes only controlled treatment studies. The primary inclusion criterion was randomization of participants to an experimental group and to at least 1 control group. Eleven studies were ident

Huntington's disease (HD) is an autosomal dominant inherited disorder of the central nervous system. Consequently, a child of an affected parent has a 50% risk of developing the disease. This article provides an overview of HD by providing a brief history of the disease and describing progressive symptoms of chorea, dystonia, incoordination and decreased mental acuity. Steps in diagnosis, treatment and prognosis are outlined. Because persons at risk for HD have usually witnessed the deterioration of an HD parent, they are often dominated by fears of developing HD themselves. Life's choices, su

Social phobias affect some 2.4 million American adults, and more than 5 million can expect to develop a social phobia during their lifetime. Despite their prevalence, social phobias have been virtually ignored until this past decade. The Anxiety Disorders Association of America (ADAA) was founded in 1980 to promote awareness among professionals and the public of anxiety disorders. This paper outlines the objectives of ADAA and its programs, including the Self-Help Group Network, helpful publications, and its partnership with psychiatrists and patients. Essential blepharospasm is a chronic, potentially disabling disorder for which there is no known cause or cure. The term blepharospasm derives from the Greek word 'blepharon' meaning eyelid and the word 'essential' implies unknown cause. In neurological literature blepharospasm is classed as a focal dystonia. Lack of recognition of the disease may cause patients to consult numerous physicians as well as acupuncturists, chiropractors, faith healers and others in an effort to find a cure to what they are sure is not just a psychological problem. Nurses who are knowledgeable about the disease ent

Many different treatments for obesity have proven somewhat successful, with none emerging as clearly superior to the others. Surgical approaches, although usually successful at achieving and maintaining weight loss, are accompanied by varied and often harmful side effects. Unless new, safer procedures are developed, treatment may continue to be as hazardous as the obesity itself. Because medical treatment alone has not achieved beneficial, lasting results, research aimed at finding new procedures should be encouraged. Our five-year experience in working with obese patients has led us to the fo

OBJECTIVE: Involvement in mutual-help groups (MHGs) is associated with positive alcohol recovery outcomes. Attendance is a first step to involvement, but barriers to attendance remain poorly understood, especially among second-wave (non-12-step) MHGs. This study aimed to describe the most common barriers to MHG attendance, describe variation in barriers across diverse MHG types, and identify attendance barrier domains associated with MHG involvement over a 12-month period.
METHOD: Data were from the Peer Alternatives (PAL) Study 2021 Cohort, a longitudinal, online survey of second-wave and 12

BACKGROUND: Second-wave mutual-help groups (MHGs) for addiction (e.g., SMART Recovery) are prevalent and promising, but limited studies have examined their effectiveness. We examined 1) the comparative effectiveness of second-wave MHGs for supporting alcohol use disorder recovery and 2) correlates of MHG involvement.
METHODS: Data were pooled from the Peer ALternatives for Addiction (PAL) Study 2015 and 2021 Cohorts (N = 1152), which recruited adults via collaboration with MHG directors and recovery-related organizations. Eligibility criteria included U.S. residence, lifetime alcohol use diso
