[Detection of changes in cerebral blood flow and cerebrovascular autoregulation by near-infrared spectroscopy in newborn piglets].

OBJECTIVE: A large body of experimental and clinical observations indicates that disturbances in cerebral blood flow (CBF) and impaired cerebrovascular autoregulation are important in the pathogenesis of germinal matrix-intraventricular hemorrhage (GMH-IVH) and periventricular leukomalacia (PVL), the 2 most important forms of brain injury in pretmature infants. Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) has been used recently to estimate CBF in human newborns. The objectives of this study were to evaluate the correlation of NIRS estimations and cerebral blood flow in newborn piglets, which in turn may

Spatiotemporal feature-based investigation of major depressive disorder and emotion recognition using functional near infrared spectroscopy.

Major Depressive Disorder (MDD) remains one of the most prevalent psychiatric conditions worldwide, with a marked increase in incidence and severity following the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite its rising burden, clinical diagnosis continues to rely on subjective assessments, lacking objective and reproducible neurobiological markers. Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS) has emerged as a promising non-invasive imaging technique capable of capturing the spatiotemporal dynamics of cerebral hemodynamics, particularly within the prefrontal cortex-a key region involved in emotional regulation

Rapid and robust quality evaluation of fragrances using near-infrared spectroscopy compensated with multi-color parameters.

This study investigated the influence of sample color variations on near-infrared (NIR) spectra and spectral modeling for fragrance quality evaluation. The color characteristics of 73 fragrance samples of different types and batches were first analyzed. Hierarchical clustering of RGB and L*a*b* color parameters was performed to objectively assign color labels to fragrance samples, and then violin plots using different color labels revealed distinct color differences across sample types and batches. Principal component analysis (PCA) of the NIR spectra revealed a clear separation trend of sampl

Functional Brain Responses to Short-Duration Light Physical Activity in Children: Insights From Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Light-intensity physical activity (LPA) (a low level of effort with a slight increase in heart rate and breathing) supports children's cognitive development, particularly in brain regions responsible for attention and executive functions. This study investigated the effects of short-term LPA on prefrontal cortex (PFC) activity using functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS). Thirty-three children aged 10 to 14 years completed seated, light-intensity exercises involving coordination and balance. Hemodynamic changes in oxygenated hemoglobin were recorded in three subregions of the PFC. A sig

Visible/near infrared spectroscopy in muscle beef analysis: How device choice and sampling affect prediction accuracy.

This study evaluated the performance of two portable spectral devices (visible: Vis; near-infrared: NIR) and one benchtop combined Vis/NIR instrument for predicting beef biochemical traits related to meat quality. A total of 497 muscle samples were collected from 55 fattening farms across five European countries. Reference values were obtained exclusively from pooled samples. For the benchtop device, two sampling strategies were compared: 1) direct scanning of pooled samples (n = 99) used for reference analyses, and 2) scanning individual samples followed by spectral averaging to match pooled

Detection of Δ9-Tetrahydrocannabinol Impairment Using Resting-State Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

IMPORTANCE: The primary psychoactive compound in cannabis, ∆9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) induces intoxication and functional impairment, raising safety concerns in driving. The traditional impairment detection method, behavioral field sobriety tests (FSTs), are subject to bias. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) can detect THC-related impairment with greater accuracy and a lower rate of false positives than FSTs. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: This double-blind, randomized, crossover trial was conducted from January 2017 to January

Exploring the Relationship Between Cerebral Blood Flow and Oral Exercise Using Head-Mounted Near-Infrared Spectroscopy.

Swallowing activities have been increasingly recognized as relevant to cognitive function, yet the physiological pathways linking these functions to the brain remain incompletely understood. One proposed mechanism involves changes in cerebral blood flow. This study examined whether a standardized oral exercise program could alter prefrontal cerebral blood flow, measured by near-infrared spectroscopy. This single-center prospective study enrolled 52 healthy adults (mean age 33.1 ± 10.4 years; 67.3% female). Participants performed a 12-min exercise protocol consisting of 15 guided tasks classifi

Artificial Intelligence-Driven Hemodynamic Monitoring of Simulated Bruxism Using Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy: A Preliminary Study.

BACKGROUND: Sleep-related and neuromuscular conditions affect the daily lives of individuals as they impact physical and cognitive well-being. While not classified as a disorder, bruxism has emerged as a prevalent condition characterized by involuntary teeth grinding and jaw clenching, occurring either during sleep or wakefulness. Often left unnoticed, this unconscious behavior can contribute to severe dental damage, facial muscle fatigue, and temporomandibular joint disorders. These consequences require early detection and intervention to prevent long-term complications. Traditionally, polyso

Quantitative analysis of tissue oxygenation variability across anatomical landmarks in healthy individuals via near-infrared spectroscopy.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) enables noninvasive assessment of tissue oxygenation, but its broader clinical application is hindered by the absence of standardized reference values across anatomical regions. This study aimed to characterize baseline regional tissue oxygen saturation (rSO2) across 17 anatomical landmarks in healthy adults and to identify the most consistent and reproducible measurement sites. Seventy-eight healthy participants (mean age 31 ± 13.4 years) underwent rSO2 assessments using a continuous-wave NIRS system. Demographic and physiological data, including age, sex, sk

Functional dual-slope frequency-domain near-infrared spectroscopy data interpreted with two- and three-layer models.

SIGNIFICANCE: Functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) is impacted by signal contamination from superficial hemodynamics. It is important to develop methods that account for such contamination and provide accurate measurements of cerebral hemodynamics. AIM: This work aims to investigate whether simulated data with two-layer or three-layer tissue models are able to reproduce in vivo data collected with dual-slope (DS) frequency-domain (FD) near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) on human subjects during brain activation. APPROACH: We performed Monte Carlo simulations to generate DS FD-NIRS dat

Identification of individuals using functional near-infrared spectroscopy based on a one-dimensional convolutional neural network.

In recent years, the application of functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) and deep learning techniques has emerged as a promising method for personal identification. In this study, we innovatively utilized a deep learning framework and fNIRS data for personal identification. The framework is a one-dimensional convolutional neural network (Conv1D) trained on resting-state fNIRS signals collected from the frontal cortex of adults. In data preprocessing, we employed a sliding window-based data augmentation technique and high-pass filter, which could result in the highest identification ac

Ventilatory Support, Extubation, and Cerebral Perfusion Changes in Pre-Term Neonates: A Near Infrared Spectroscopy Study.

Early extubation is considered to be beneficial for pre-term neonates. On the other hand, premature extubation can cause lung derecruitment, compromised gas exchange, and need for reintubation, which may be associated with severe brain injury caused by sudden cerebral blood flow changes. We used near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to investigate changes in cerebral oxygenation (rScO2) and fractional tissue oxygen extraction (+) after extubation in pre-term infants. This is a single-center retrospective study of NIRS data at extubation time of all consecutive pre-term neonates born at our institu

Traceability of Microplastic Fragments from Waste Plastic Express Packages Using Near-Infrared Spectroscopy Combined with Chemometrics.

The pollution from waste plastic express packages (WPEPs), especially microplastic (MP) fragments, caused by the blowout development of the express delivery industry has attracted widespread attention. On account of the variety of additives, strong complexity, and high diversity of plastic express packages (PEPs), the multi-class classification of WPEPs is a typical large-class-number classification (LCNC). The traceability and identification of microplastic fragments from WPEPs is very challenging. An effective chemometric method for large-class-number classification would be very beneficial

Preterm infants variability in cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy measurements in the first 72-h after birth.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral near-infrared spectroscopy is a non-invasive tool used to measure regional cerebral tissue oxygenation (rScO2) initially validated in adult and pediatric populations. Preterm neonates, vulnerable to neurologic injury, are attractive candidates for NIRS monitoring; however, normative data and the brain regions measured by the current technology have not yet been established for this population. METHODS: This study's aim was to analyze continuous rScO2 readings within the first 6-72 h after birth in 60 neonates without intracerebral hemorrhage born at ≤1250 g and/or ≤30 wee

Near-Infrared Spectroscopy as a Hemodynamic Monitoring Tool during Neonatal Extracorporeal Life Support: A Case Series.

Near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) is a non-invasive clinical tool allowing for real-time, continuous measurement of regional tissue oxygenation (rSO2); though predominantly used for neuromonitoring, it also has the potential for early detection of hemodynamic compromise in the patients on extracorporeal life support (ECLS). The authors present two cases of neonates for whom continuous monitoring of multisite rSO2 with NIRS provided the first indication of a significant compromise in hemodynamic status from catastrophic hemorrhagic complications while on ECLS ahead of conventional ECLS monitori
