Hurricane Helene's catastrophic impact on the Southeastern United States highlighted the critical importance of disaster preparedness. This study analyzes data from FEMA's 2023 National Household Survey to examine pre-Helene disaster risk perception and preparedness levels among residents of six Southeastern states: Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia. BACKGROUND: Since 2016, an increasing number of states have passed laws restricting the days' supply for opioid prescriptions, yet little is known about how these laws affect patients. OBJECTIVE: To study trends in injury mortality for low- and high-risk young children.
DESIGN AND METHODS: For Tennessee children 0 to 4 years of age, we used birth certificates to obtain data on maternal education, age, and parity; these risk factors were used to classify children into low- and high-risk groups. The outcome was death from injury, as determined from linked death certificates. Between 1978 and 1995, injury mortality rates were calculated for six 3-year periods for low- and high-risk children.

Medical records of 5 cats with blastomycosis examined at the University of Tennessee Veterinary Teaching Hospital from 1979 to 1986 were reviewed. Four Blastomyces antigens ERC-2 (B. gilchristii, dog, Wisconsin), B5929 (human, Minnesota), 597 (human, Wisconsin), and T-27 (polar bear, Tennessee) were tested against 31 serum specimens from dogs with blastomycosis and 19 from healthy dogs.
