Tackling social anxiety with targeted brain stimulation: investigating the effects of transcranial static magnetic field stimulation on self-focused attention.

Previous studies suggested that self-focused attention (SFA), implicated in social anxiety disorder (SAD), correlates with heightened activity in the right frontopolar area (rFPA), which is the right prefrontal cortex just behind the forehead. Transcranial static magnetic field stimulation (tSMS) is a non-invasive brain stimulation method capable of temporarily suppressing brain function beneath the magnet. We explored whether tSMS on individuals with tendencies toward SAD elicited (1) suppressing rFPA activation during the resting-state and (2) reducing SFA during a subsequent speech task. Tw

Calcified plaque harboring lipidic materials associates with no-reflow phenomenon after PCI in stable CAD.

Calcified atheroma has been viewed conventionally as stable lesion which less likely increases no-reflow phenomenon. Given that lipidic materials triggers the formation of calcification, lipidic materials could exist within calcified lesion, which may cause no-reflow phenomenon after PCI. The REASSURE-NIRS registry (NCT04864171) employed near-infrared spectroscopy and intravascular ultrasound imaging to evaluate maximum 4-mm lipid-core burden index (maxLCBI4mm) at target lesions containing small (maximum calcification arc < 180°: n = 272) and large calcification (maximum calcification arc ≥ 18

Characterization of plaque phenotypes exhibiting an elevated pericoronary adipose tissue attenuation: insights from the REASSURE-NIRS registry.

Inflammation has been considered to promote atheroma instability. Coronary computed tomography angiography (CCTA) visualizes pericoronary adipose tissue (PCAT) attenuation, which reflects coronary artery inflammation. While PCAT attenuation has been reported to predict future coronary events, plaque phenotypes exhibiting high PCAT attenuation remains to be fully elucidated. The current study aims to characterize coronary atheroma with a greater vascular inflammation. We retrospectively analyzed culprit lesions in 69 CAD patients receiving PCI from the REASSURE-NIRS registry (NCT04864171). Culp

Trigger point dry needling increases masseter muscle oxygenation in patients with temporomandibular disorder.

BACKGROUND: Temporomandibular disorder (TMD) is an umbrella term encompassing various clinical complaints involving the temporomandibular joints, masticatory muscles, and/or associated orofacial structures. Myogenous TMDs are the most frequent cause of chronic orofacial pain. Musculoskeletal pain is commonly associated with myofascial trigger points (MTPs), for which dry needling (DN) is a routine treatment. OBJECTIVE: To investigate muscle oxygenation and pain immediately after DN application on an MTP in the masseter muscle of patients with myogenous TMDs. METHODOLOGY: Masseter muscle oxyg

Neuroplasticity Following Stroke from a Functional Laterality Perspective: A fNIRS Study.

To explore alterations of resting-state functional connectivity (rsFC) in sensorimotor cortex following strokes with left or right hemiplegia considering the lateralization and neuroplasticity. Seventy-three resting-state functional near-infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) files were selected, including 26 from left hemiplegia (LH), 21 from right hemiplegia (RH) and 26 from normal controls (NC) group. Whole-brain analyses matching the Pearson correlation were used for rsFC calculations. For right-handed normal controls, rsFC of motor components (M1 and M2) in the left hemisphere displayed a prominen

Neuroimaging, wearable sensors, and blood-based biomarkers reveal hyperacute changes in the brain after sub-concussive impacts.

Impacts in mixed martial arts (MMA) have been studied mainly in regard to the long-term effects of concussions. However, repetitive sub-concussive head impacts at the hyperacute phase (minutes after impact), are not understood. The head experiences rapid acceleration similar to a concussion, but without clinical symptoms. We utilize portable neuroimaging technology - transcranial Doppler (TCD) ultrasound and functional near infrared spectroscopy (fNIRS) - to estimate the extent of pre- and post-differences following contact and non-contact sparring sessions in nine MMA athletes. In addition, t

Effects of Posture and Walking on Tibial Vascular Hemodynamics Before and After 14 Days of Head-Down Bed Rest.

Human skeletal hemodynamics remain understudied. Neither assessments in weight-bearing bones during walking nor following periods of immobility exist, despite knowledge of altered nutrient-artery characteristics after short-duration unloading in rodents. We studied 12 older adults (8 females, aged 59 ± 3 years) who participated in ambulatory near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) assessments of tibial hemodynamics before (PRE) and after (POST) 14 days of head-down bed rest (HDBR), with most performing daily resistance and aerobic exercise countermeasures during HDBR. Dual-layered stents reduce cerebral embolism compared with first-generation stents during carotid stenting of high lipid core plaque lesions.

BACKGROUND: Periprocedural lipid core plaque (LCP) has been detected in carotid arteries assessed by catheter-based near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS). High LCP is associated with cerebral embolism after carotid artery stenting (CAS) using a first-generation stent. We aimed to evaluate whether dual-layered stents reduce embolic infarcts in patients with high LCP and change of lipid signal as assessed by NIRS during CAS. METHODS: Participants comprised 210 consecutive patients undergoing CAS. The study was divided into two distinct periods, with first-generation closed-cell stents used in the e

Depression in systemic lupus erythematosus: A manifestation of microcirculation dysfunction?

OBJECTIVES: Depression is highly prevalent among systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) patients. Brain hypoperfusion in neuropsychiatric SLE patients might be associated with emotional difficulties. However, no previous study examined possible associations of depression with brain oxygenation during a mild physical stress in non-neuropsychiatric SLE patients. Our study aimed to identify possible differences in cerebral oxygenation during exercise in SLE patients with and without depressive symptoms using near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and examine possible underlying mechanisms through evaluati

Physical Activity, Muscle Oxidative Capacity, and Coronary Artery Calcium in Smokers with and without COPD.

INTRODUCTION: Severe chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is partly characterized by diminished skeletal muscle oxidative capacity and concurrent dyslipidemia. It is unknown whether such metabolic derangements increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. This study explored associations among physical activity (PA), muscle oxidative capacity, and coronary artery calcium (CAC) in COPDGene participants. METHODS: Data from current and former smokers with COPD (n = 75) and normal spirometry (n = 70) were retrospectively analyzed. Physical activity was measured for seven days using triaxia

Cerebral autoregulation in infants during sevoflurane anesthesia for craniofacial surgery.

BACKGROUND: Data on cerebral pressure-flow autoregulation in the youngest children are scarce. We studied the correlation between mean arterial pressure and cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (rSO2 ) by near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in patients undergoing nose, lip, and palate surgery. AIM: We tested the hypothesis that cerebral pressure-flow autoregulation is impaired in children less than 1 year undergoing surgery and general anesthesia with sevoflurane under controlled mechanical ventilation. METHOD: After approval from the Ethical board, 15 children aged <1 year were included. Before

Photo-responsive functional gold nanocapsules for inactivation of community-acquired, highly virulent, multidrug-resistant MRSA.

The indiscriminate and sporadic use of antibiotics has contributed to the emergence of drug resistance phenomenon in bacteria including but not limited to Staphylococcus aureus. These drug-resistant bacteria have been threatening safety in hospitals and adversely affecting human health. Here we report a strategy to design photo-stimulated theranostic nanoprobes against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) "superbug" USA300. The nanocapsule probe is based on gold nanorods (GNRs) coated with pegylated thiol, mPEG-SH, which has been further modified by adding successively a natural

Correlation Between Cerebral Tissue Oxygen Saturation and Oxygen Extraction Fraction During Anesthesia: Monitoring Cerebral Metabolic Demand-supply Balance During Vasopressor Administration.

BACKGROUND: The speculation that cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO 2 ) measured using tissue near-infrared spectroscopy reflects the balance between cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen and cerebral oxygen delivery has not been validated. Our objective was to correlate SctO 2 with cerebral oxygen extraction fraction (OEF) measured using positron emission tomography; OEF is the ratio between cerebral metabolic rate of oxygen and cerebral oxygen delivery and reflects the balance between these 2 variables. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This cohort study was based on data collected in a previously pu

Brain and renal oxygenation measured by NIRS related to patent ductus arteriosus in preterm infants: a prospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) is common among preterm neonates. Haemodynamically significant ductus arteriosus (hsPDA) can cause ductal steal and contribute to poor outcomes. Our aim was to evaluate ductus arteriosus patency and significance using two-site near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) measurements in preterm infants older than 72 h as a supplemental tool to echocardiography. METHODS: In this prospective observational study, 123 preterm infants (gestational age (GA) < 32 weeks, birth weight < 1500 g) were enrolled. Sixty-four newborns had closed ductus arteriosus (noPDA), and
