Five-year results following regenerative periodontal surgery with an enamel matrix derivative in patients with different smoking status.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the five-year results following regenerative periodontal surgery of intrabony defects using an enamel matrix derivative (EMD) in patients with different smoking status. METHOD AND MATERIALS: The dental records of patients treated with regenerative periodontal surgery with EMD between 2001 and 2011 were screened. The clinical parameters at baseline (T0) and 6 months (T1) and 5 years (T2) after surgery were collected and analyzed in relation to patient's smoking status (smokers, former smokers, and nonsmokers). RESULTS: A total of 71 sites were initially assessed in 38 p

The Association Between Buccal Mucosa Thickness and Periimplant Bone Loss and Attachment Loss: A Cross-Sectional Study.

PURPOSE: The aim of this study was to assess if there is an association between buccal mucosa thickness and periimplant attachment loss after 1 year of function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 28 patients (14 periimplantitis implants and 14 healthy implants) were included. The buccal mucosal thickness was assessed using K-files at 3 mm apical to the soft tissue margin of the implant. Probing depth, recession (REC), clinical attachment level (CAL), bleeding on probing, and radiographic bone loss on mesial and distal sites of the implant were recorded. RESULTS: The data showed that there wa

The Octagon Model: a clinical tool for assessing marginal tissue recession.

The Octagon Model is a clinical assessment tool designed to assess marginal tissue recession (MTR) and estimate the level of difficulty in achieving root coverage. It evaluates eight patient- and siterelated factors: patient's expectations, smoking status, width of keratinized tissue, absence/presence of cervical lesion, interproximal soft tissue/bone level, depth and width of recession defect, and buccal bone thickness. The model is presented in a three-colored diagram to facilitate communication between clinicians and between clinicians and their patients, and to assist clinicians in optimiz

The Effect of Insertion Torque on the Clinical Outcome of Single Implants: A Randomized Clinical Trial.

BACKGROUND: The insertion torque value has been extensively used as an indicator for implant primary stability, which is considered a determining parameter for the implants success. PURPOSE: The primary goal of the present randomized clinical trial was to evaluate and compare the clinical outcome for implants placed with high insertion torque (between 50 Ncm and 100 Ncm) and regular insertion torque (within 50 Ncm) in healed ridges. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Partially edentulous patients, missing one or more mandibular or maxillary teeth, having an adequate amount of bone, requiring implant pla

Validation of the Basic Erosive Wear Examination.

The Basic Erosive Wear Examination (BEWE) is a practical index for screening tooth wear, using a 4-point ordinal scale (0-3). The highest score is recorded in each sextant and a total score (or BEWE sextant cumulative) is calculated per subject. This study aims to investigate if the BEWE sextant cumulative score compares to one comprising a percentage score from all tooth surfaces and as a highest BEWE per subject. The aim is to assess the validity of this score. A total of 350 subjects were recruited from hospital and general practice in south-east England. Buccal, occlusal and lingual/palata

Radiographic evaluation of Gustafson's criteria for the purpose of forensic age diagnostics.

The main criteria used in dental age estimation in living young individuals are mineralisation and eruption of the third molars. In order to further diversify the spectrum of characteristics after completion of third molar development, tests were undertaken to determine whether the characteristics studied by Gustafson can be ascertained with the required forensic certainty with the aid of the orthopantomogram and whether the evaluation of these could render forensic odontological age diagnoses possible beyond the 18th year of life. For this purpose, 1,299 conventionally produced orthopantomogr

An interarch alveolar ridge relationship classification.

Alveolar ridge defects resulting from tooth loss, trauma, periodontal disease, or congenital lesions often require correction prior to dental implant therapy. Numerous classifications proposed to describe alveolar ridge defects have been limited to describe intra-arch relationships. To provide sufficient jaw-to-jaw alveolar ridge (interarch) relationship information for both restorative and surgical treatment decision-making, this article introduces a new interarch alveolar ridge relationship classification system. This article also discusses cone beam computed tomography and multidisciplinary

Nonsurgical management of soft tissue deficiencies for anterior single implant-supported restorations: a clinical report.

Periodontal surgical procedures may not always offer a predictable level of success in the reproduction of a natural gingival architecture. Two different nonsurgical approaches are described for the management of soft tissue deficiencies in anterior implant-supported restorations. Clinically acceptable esthetic outcomes of anterior implant restorations can be achieved by using zirconium custom abutments and gingiva-colored dental porcelain.

Developing a team approach to complex aesthetics: treatment considerations.

Contemporary restorative procedures often require the incorporation of a multidisciplinary treatment approach in order to ensure that the proper clinical parameters are addressed. Incorporation of a team approach that integrates various periodontal and restorative considerations is paramount to successful treatment in complex situations. This article describes the use of a team approach for predictable treatment of a complex case presentation. Treatment planning, implant placement, periodontal maintenance, and restorative considerations are also introduced.

Non-Herlitz junctional epidermolysis bullosa without hair involvement associated with BP180 deficiency.

Junctional epidermolysis bullosa (JEB) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous recessively inherited blistering disease of the skin and mucous membranes due to impaired epithelial adhesion. In particular, defective expression of the 180-kD bullous pemphigoid antigen (BP180) has been correlated to a non-lethal (non-Herlitz) form of JEB, generalized atrophic benign epidermolysis bullosa (GABEB), characterized by widespread skin blistering healing with atrophy and by atrophic alopecia with onset in childhood. We report the case of a 33-year-old man suffering from a generalized blistering sk

[Glanzmann's thrombasthenia: a rare example of an integrin deficit].

Glanzmann's thrombasthenia is an autosomal recessive life-long bleeding disorder, originated from a quantitative or qualitative defect of the major platelet membrane receptor: the GPIIb/IIIa complex. The GPIIb/IIIa complex is a calcium-dependent heterodimer, belonging to the integrin superfamily. The complex of activated platelets can bind fibrinogen, von Willebrand factor, fibronectin and vitronectin, which are proteins playing an important role in platelet adhesion and aggregation. Thrombasthenic platelets are deficient in GPIIb, GPIIIa and GPIIb/IIIa complex; however, platelets from few thr
