Efficacy of digital cognitive behavioral therapy for moderate-to-severe symptoms of generalized anxiety disorder: A randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is an efficacious intervention for generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Digital CBT may provide a scalable means of delivering CBT at a population level. We investigated the efficacy of a novel digital CBT program in those with GAD for outcomes of anxiety, worry, depressive symptoms, sleep difficulty, wellbeing, and participant-specific quality of life. METHODS: This online, two-arm parallel-group superiority randomized controlled trial compared digital CBT with waitlist control in 256 participants with moderate-to-severe symptoms of GAD. Digital

Multifunctional 6-fluoro-3-[3-(pyrrolidin-1-yl)propyl]-1,2-benzoxazoles targeting behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD).

Patients suffering from dementia experience cognitive deficits and 90% of them show non-cognitive behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). The spectrum of BPSD includes agitation, depression, anxiety and psychosis. Antipsychotics, e.g. quetiapine, have been commonly used off-label to control the burdensome symptoms, though they cause serious side effects and further cognitive impairment. Therefore, the development of targeted therapy for BPSD, suitable for elderly patients, remains relevant. A multitarget-directed ligand, acting on serotonin 5-HT2A and dopamine D2 receptors (R

Behavioral symptoms of child mental disorders and lifetime substance use in adolescence: A within-family comparison of US siblings.

BACKGROUND: Childhood attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is found to be a risk factor for substance use in adolescence, but literature has suggested that the observed influence of ADHD may be driven by the comorbid conduct disorder (CD) or oppositional defiance disorder (ODD). We examine whether childhood ADHD and CD influence lifetime use of substances, independent of other comorbid mental problems and familial risk factors. METHODS: A total of 712 sibling pairs from a nationally representative US longitudinal survey were followed from 1997 to 2015. The Behavior Problems Index (

Dog Phobia Intervention: A Case Study in Improvement of Physiological and Behavioral Symptoms in A Child with Intellectual Disability.

Background: Children with intellectual disability are at risk for anxiety disorders involving intense physiological reactions and risky behavioral responses. Interventions have been identified in this field; however, assessment of underlying anxiety is limited and flawed.Method: We implemented a single-subject case study using differential reinforcement to treat dog phobia in a boy with intellectual disability. We recorded elopement and compliance with goals and measured physiological expressions of stress: galvanic skin response, heart rate variability, temperature, and latency to calm down.R

Predictors of non-pharmacological intervention effect on cognitive function and behavioral and psychological symptoms of older people with dementia.

AIM: Our previous work showed that non-pharmacological interventions could effectively reduce the severity of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), while the factors influencing the effect of intervention were less explored. Therefore, the main purpose of the present study was to investigate the predictors of the non-pharmacological intervention effect for old veterans with dementia and BPSD. METHODS: A total of 141 old veterans with dementia living in two veterans' homes in northern Taiwan were recruited. The participants received an organized non-pharmacological interven

Social Engagement and Antipsychotic Use in Addressing the Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia in Long-Term Care Facilities.

Objectives The use of antipsychotics, mainly to address the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD), remains a common and frequent practice in long-term care facilities (LTCFs) despite their associated risks. The objective of this study was to explore the association between social engagement (SE) and the use of antipsychotics in addressing the BPSD in newly admitted residents to LTCFs. Methods A cross-sectional study was undertaken using administrative data, primarily the Resident Assessment Instrument Minimum Data Set (Version 2.0) that collected between 2008 and 2011 (Frase

Antipsychotic, antidepressant, and cognitive-impairment properties of antipsychotics: rat profile and implications for behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

Many dementia patients exhibit behavioral and psychological symptoms (BPSD), including psychosis and depression. Although antipsychotics are frequently prescribed off-label, they can have marked side effects. In addition, comparative preclinical studies of their effects are surprisingly scarce, and strategies for discovery of novel pharmacotherapeutics are lacking. We therefore compared eight antipsychotics in rat behavioral tests of psychosis, antidepressant-like activity, and cognitive impairment as a basis for preclinical evaluation of new drug candidates. The methods used in this study inc

Cognitive processes as mediators of the relation between mindfulness and change in social anxiety symptoms following cognitive behavioral treatment.

The present study examined whether pretreatment mindfulness exerts an indirect effect on outcomes following cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT). Cognitive processes of probability and cost bias (i.e., overestimations of the likelihood that negative social events will occur, and that these events will have negative consequences when they do occur) were explored as potential mediators of the relation between mindfulness and social anxiety symptom change. People with higher levels of mindfulness may be better able to benefit from treatments that reduce biases because mindfulness may aid in regulat

Early educational and behavioral RCT interventions to reduce maternal symptoms of psychological trauma following preterm birth: a systematic review.

Early behavioral and educational interventions have been developed to reduce maternal symptoms of psychological trauma (depression, anxiety, parenting stress, acute stress disorder, and posttraumatic stress disorder) following preterm birth (PTB). Aims of this systematic review were to critically assess study methodology and provide a synthesis of existing randomized control trial (RCT) interventions and to estimate effects of the interventions in reducing the maternal symptoms across studies. Four electronic databases were systematically searched to locate relevant RCTs using preestablished e

A double-blind comparison of citalopram and risperidone for the treatment of behavioral and psychotic symptoms associated with dementia.

OBJECTIVE: To compare citalopram and risperidone for the treatment of psychotic symptoms and agitation associated with dementia, with a priori hypotheses that risperidone would be more efficacious for psychosis and citalopram for agitation. METHODS: A 12-week randomized, controlled trial in nondepressed patients with dementia hospitalized because of behavioral symptoms (N = 103) was conducted at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Participants were consecutively recruited on an inpatient unit if they had at least one moderate to severe target symptom (aggression, agitation, hostility…

Behavioral avoidance and self-reported fainting symptoms in blood/injury fearful individuals: an experimental test of disgust domain specificity.

This study examined the specificity of disgust in predicting avoidance in blood/injury (BI) phobia. Participants high (n=38) and low (n=46) in BI fear completed measures of disgust across multiple domains and severity of BI-related fear. They then completed three randomly presented behavioral avoidance tasks (BATs) that consisted of exposure to a 15'' severed deer leg (BI task), a live spider (spider task), and a 'contaminated' cookie (cookie task). Fainting symptoms associated with each BAT were recorded as well. When controlling for gender and BI fear group membership, mutilation disgust con

[Principle symptoms of delayed language development and behavioral disorders. 2 case studies on the topic of fragile X syndrome].

Case reports of two boys (5 1/2 and 3 1/2 years old) with fragile X syndrome are presented. In both cases, the typical somatic signs were absent. On the other hand, the psychopathology, with delayed language development and behaviour problems (especially hyperactivity and autistic behavior), provided the indication for a chromosome analysis. Fragile X syndrome was diagnosed in both cases, but in case 2 two subsequent controls were negative. The conclusions are that a diagnosis of fragile X syndrome must be viewed with skepticism until it has been confirmed by a second chromosome analysis in an

Burden and well-being among dementia caregivers in Puerto Rico: the role of behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia.

OBJECTIVES: Dementia is more prevalent in Puerto Rico than in the U.S. mainland, increasing demands for caregiving. However, research on the mental health impact of dementia caregiving among island Puerto Ricans is sparse. We examined caregiver burden and depressive symptoms among Puerto Rican dementia caregivers while also considering behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). METHODS: Using data from the Puerto Rican Elder: Health Conditions (PREHCO) study (Wave 3), 132 caregivers of PREHCO participants requiring care completed an ancillary data collection, of whom 101 cared

Influence of Behavioral and Psychological Symptoms of Dementia Clusters on Activities of Daily Living in a Subacute Rehabilitation Setting.

BACKGROUND: Understanding the relationship between specific behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) clusters and improvements in activities of daily living (ADL) supports effective interventions for dementia. This study identified BPSD clusters and examined their association with ADL improvement in patients with dementia in subacute rehabilitation settings. METHODS: This prospective cohort study included 137 patients with dementia, aged 65 years or older, admitted to a subacute rehabilitation ward in Japan. ADL and BPSD were assessed using the Functional Independence Measure

Efficacy of psychological and behavioral interventions for depressive symptoms in people with epilepsy: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Depression is a common and clinically important comorbidity in people with epilepsy and is associated with poorer quality of life, impaired treatment adherence, increased disease burden, and worse clinical outcomes. Psychological and behavioral interventions have been increasingly applied in this population; however, the overall efficacy and consistency of evidence across different intervention categories remain uncertain. OBJECTIVE: This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to evaluate the effects of psychological and behavioral interventions on depressive symptoms in people

Effects of an imagery-enhanced behavioral activation intervention on depressive symptoms and activation levels: Results from the WIMBA-trial.

Psychological treatments for depression are effective but about half of the patients do not improve in treatment suggesting a need for treatment innovation. Evidence-based treatments, such as Behavioral Activation (BA), aim to increase rewarding activities in daily life. Lab-based research has shown that by generating mental imagery of potentially rewarding activities (rather than thinking about them verbally) individuals can alter their appraisals of these activities, increasing anticipated pleasure and motivation. However, BA does not explicitly encourage patients to use mental imagery when

Functional hearing difficulty in Alzheimer's disease: Selective links to verbal fluency and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia severity.

BackgroundHearing loss is a well-established risk factor for dementia. However, the clinical relevance of everyday listening difficulties after the diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease (AD) remains insufficiently understood, particularly in relation to cognition and behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD). Functional hearing difficulty refers to perceived difficulties in everyday listening situations that are not fully captured by standard audiometric thresholds.ObjectiveTo examine the associations between caregiver-rated functional hearing difficulty, cognitive measures commonly

Internet-based cognitive behavioral therapy for anxiety and depressive symptoms in Brazilian emerging adults: A pilot randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Anxiety and depressive disorders are highly prevalent in Brazil, with higher vulnerability among young adults. Despite the high prevalence, Brazil faces significant challenges in its mental health care system, with only a minority receiving treatment. Tailored internet-delivered cognitive behavioral therapy (ICBT) offers a promising strategy to address this treatment versus demand gap. This study examines the efficacy of individually tailored ICBT intervention with on-demand support for reducing anxiety and depressive symptoms in young adults. METHODS: This two-arm randomized cont

Electroacupuncture reshapes the microbial co-occurrence networks related to the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia in Alzheimer's disease.

Microbial keystone species and gut microbiota composition are highly variable during the pathological development of the behavioral and psychological symptoms of dementia (BPSD) in Alzheimer's disease (AD). Age stratification reveals stage-specific gut microbial signatures in AD-related BPSD. This study highlights the efficacy of electroacupuncture in regard to altering the intestinal microbial landscape in AD-related BPSD and provides novel insights into the application of phased targeted electroacupuncture interventions in the future.
