Naturally occurring tetracycline-like fluorescence in sections of femur from jackals in Zimbabwe.

In assessing the potential of the tetracycline compounds as biomarkers in oral rabies vaccination campaigns in jackals in Zimbabwe, the natural prevalence of fluorescent compounds in bone tissue from jackals was investigated. Femur samples were taken from unbaited jackals received for routine rabies diagnosis, and thin undecalcified sections were cut and viewed under an ultraviolet microscope. Of 131 femur samples examined, 49 (37 per cent) had fluorescent markings indistinguishable from those of tetracycline. The result implies that the tetracycline compounds, which are commonly used in rabie

[Scabies among the Zoo mammals].

Scabies was observed in 9 species of mammals at the Zoological Garden of Lódź in years 1957-1989. Sarcoptes scabiei spp. was found in capybaras, tapirs and camelids. Notoedres cati was recorded from the siberian tiger, but Notoedres sp. from the Erinaceus europaeus. Scabies was also found in a wild dead Tapla europaea at the Zoo area.

Dracunculus insignis in ferrets: comparison of inoculation routes.

Three routes of inoculation were compared to determine the best method to infect ferrets with Dracunculus insignis. The traditional method of administering infected cyclops containing L3s through gavage was compared to intraperitoneal (i.p.) and subcutaneous (s.c.) inoculation of L3s. Ten of 18 (56%) gavaged ferrets became infected after receiving copepods containing approximately 100 L3s each; 44 adult worms were recovered from these 10 animals. Twenty-one of 28 (75%) animals inoculated with 50 L3s each became infected i.p.; 92 adult worms were recovered from the positive animals. Four of 5 (

Urinary steroid concentrations during natural and gonadotrophin-induced oestrus and pregnancy in the giant panda (Ailuropoda melanoleuca).

Urinary concentrations of conjugated oestrone and pregnanediol-3-glucuronide were measured during and after spontaneous and induced oestrus and during pregnancy. Behavioural oestrus was preceded by a rise in oestrone values from less than 10 ng/mg creatinine (Cr) to peaks of 45 ng/mg Cr. Maximal lordotic response and mating activity coincided with the decline in oestrone levels. After presumed ovulation, urinary pregnanediol glucuronide concentrations increased from less than 5 to 15-30 ng/mg Cr. Further increases in this steroid (to 60-80 ng/mg Cr) occurred 114 days after mating, presumably c

Endemicity of spotted fever group rickettsiae in Connecticut.

To compare rickettsial infectivity and seropositivity rates against spotted fever group (SFG) rickettsiae, ticks and wild mammals were collected from three areas where Rickettsia rickettsii was thought to be enzootic in Connecticut during 1978-1979, and from four additional sites (with no reported human cases) between 1976 and 1979. Of the 1,001 Dermacentor variabilis examined by the hemolymph test, 59 (5.9%) contained rickettsia-like organisms; direct immunofluorescence tests verified the presence of SFT rickettsiae in 14 specimens. Prevalence of rickettsiae-infected ticks at Newtown, an area

Epidemiologic survey of sylvatic plague by serotesting coyote sentinels with enzyme immunoassay.

The geographic distribution and areas of high sylvatic plague activity in California were verified by using coyotes (Canis latrans) as sentinel animals. Antibody levels against Yersinia pestis were tested using the enzyme-labelled antibody (ELA) test and the microtiter passive hemagglutination and hemagglutination inhibition. A survey using the ELA test indicated that the overall antibody prevalence among 143 coyotes was 21%. By geographic regions, the highest antibody prevalence was 27% among coyotes from mountain areas on the northern and eastern borders of the state. This was followed by 19

Sylvatic trichinosis in British Columbia: potential threat to human health from an independent cycle.

The results of a 3-year study of trichinosis in British Columbia wild-life, based on the testing of more than 9,000 tissue specimens from a large variety of animal species, indicated that trichinosis is widespread among wild mammals in the southern and central parts of British Columbia. This continuing survey has established that the disease is carried by at least 15 species of terrestrial mammals including 3 species of rodents. The finding of Trichinella spiralis in ground squirrels and nonsynanthropic mice may be the first reported in North America. Although trichinosis appears to be eradica

Leptospirosis in zoo workers associated with bears.

Leptospirosis due to Leptospira interrogans serovar icterohaemorrhagiae was diagnosed in two zoo animal keepers. The implicated source of infection was bear cubs that had microscopic agglutination antibody titers to leptospires of the Icterohaemorrhagiae serogroup.

Blindness in a coyote, Canis latrans, from the rolling plains of Texas.

Gross and histopathologic lesions in the eyes of a blind coyote, Canis latrans, collected in King County, Texas are discussed. The animal was in good condition and its age estimated at 7 years. The left globe presented with a superficial corneal erosion, a small punctate erosion, and an apparent lenticular opacity. Histologically, there was a mild anterior uveitis and lenticular degeneration with thickening of the anterior lens capsule, cataractous cortex with Morgagnian globules and bladder cells, and a dense nucleus. The right eye was a firm phthistic globe with thickened extraocular muscles

Viral plasmacytosis (Aleutian disease) in mink. VI. The development of positive Coombs test in experimental infections.

Coombs tests became positive coincident with the development of plasmacytosis in experimentally infected mink. These observations are discussed as possible evidence of an auto-immune phenomenon. Several mechanisms are suggested in which a virus as primary etiologic agent might promote the observed plasmacytosis, hypergammaglobulinemia, and erythrocyte sensitization.

LEUCOENCEPHALOPATHY IN MINK.

In a herd of standard minks 30 cases of leucoencephalopathy were demonstrated in the mink kits in the years 1962 and 1963. The disease is assumed to be hereditary and due to a sub-lethal, recessive, autosomal factor. A comparison with the forms of diffuse sclerosis found in man demonstrated that the disease, as it appeared in minks, bore a striking resemblance to the so-called metachromatic type of leucoencephalopathy.

Epitope mapping and a candidate vaccine design from canine distemper virus.

BACKGROUND: Canine distemper (CD) is a worldwide spread disease that has been described in 12 families of mammals, especially in the Carnivora order, being better studied in domestic canines where vaccination represents the best means of control. CD is controlled by vaccination, but many cases of the disease still occur in vaccinated animals. AIM: The aim of this work was to study antigen-specific epitopes that can subsidize the development of a new vaccine approach. METHODS: Mapping of T cell reactive epitopes for CD virus (CDV) was carried out through enzyme-linked immunospot assays using …

Care, management, and use of ferrets in biomedical research.

The ferret (Mustela putorius furo) is a small domesticated species of the family Mustelidae within the order Carnivora. The present article reviews and discusses the current state of knowledge about housing, care, breeding, and biomedical uses of ferrets. The management and breeding procedures of ferrets resemble those used for other carnivores. Understanding its behavior helps in the use of environmental enrichment and social housing, which promote behaviors typical of the species. Ferrets have been used in research since the beginning of the twentieth century. It is a suitable non-rodent mod…
