Three Clinical Clusters Identified through Hierarchical Cluster Analysis Using Initial Laboratory Findings in Korean Patients with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus.

Systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) is a heterogeneous disorder with diverse clinical manifestations. This study classified patients by combining laboratory values at SLE diagnosis via hierarchical cluster analysis. Linear discriminant analysis was performed to construct a model for predicting clusters. Cluster analysis using data from 389 patients with SLE yielded three clusters with different laboratory characteristics. Cluster 1 had the youngest age at diagnosis and showed significantly lower lymphocyte and platelet counts and hemoglobin and complement levels and the highest erythrocyte sedi…

Differential gene expression in premalignant human epidermis revealed by cluster analysis of serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) libraries.

Serial analysis of gene expression (SAGE) has been used for quantitative analysis of gene expression. We applied cluster analysis on multiple SAGE libraries derived from premalignant epidermal tissue (actinic keratosis), normal human epidermis, and cultured keratinocytes. The samples were obtained from skin biopsies without contamination by dermal tissue or blood. A total of 60,000 transcripts (tags) were analyzed. Two-way cluster analysis was applied to both the transcripts and the tissues, resulting in separation of the cultured cells from the epidermal samples, and clustering of many, presu…

High-sensitivity flow cytometric analysis of mast cell clustering in systemic mastocytosis: a quantitative and statistical analysis.

We characterized recently identified event clusters in systemic mastocytosis (SM) by calculating the coefficient of variation (CV, %) of CD117 and side scatter (SSC), based on the mean fluorescence intensity of mast cells using flow cytometry. Seventy-five samples were from patients with SM and 124 samples from patients negative for SM (non-SM). Discrete cluster formation seen in 50 cases correlated with significantly lower CV for SSC (46.1% vs. 61.0%, p < 0.0001) and CD117 (64.5% vs. 80.5%, p < 0.0001) for SM vs. non-SM samples. A combined CVCD117 + SSC of < 125 showed a sensitivity of 80% an

One patient, one destiny: A cluster analysis of the Parkinson's progression Markers Initiative (PPMI) cohort.

BACKGROUND: Parkinson's disease (PD) is characterized by heterogeneity. While previous efforts have aimed to categorize patients by clinical subtypes, these classifications have not reliably predicted outcomes, underscoring the complexity and variability of disease progression. METHODS: Using data from the Parkinson's Progression Markers Initiative (PPMI), we conducted a longitudinal analysis of 209 individuals with PD over five years. We used cluster analysis to identify trajectory clusters in the progression of motor symptoms. Participants were categorized based on baseline variables, inclu…

Early- vs. Late-Presenting First-Episode Psychosis in Oman: A Cluster Analysis of Clinical Subgroups.

BACKGROUND: First-episode psychosis (FEP) is a critical phase in the illness trajectory, where early detection and reduced duration of untreated psychosis (DUP) are strongly associated with improved clinical outcomes. However, substantial heterogeneity exists in how individuals present for initial psychiatric care, and data from the Gulf region remain limited. OBJECTIVE: To identify clinically relevant subgroups of FEP patients in Oman using a data-driven clustering approach and to explore factors associated with treatment delays. METHODS: This retrospective exploratory study reviewed electr

Investigating the links between sexting patterns, gender, sexual orientation and psychological distress: A cluster analysis.

This study examines sexting patterns, moving beyond traditional unidimensional approaches. Using a person-centered framework, a Two-Step Cluster Analysis was conducted on a sample of 460 Italian university students (age range: 18-45 years-old, M = 23.32, SD = 4.27, 76.3% women). Sexting experiences were operationalized through five indicators distinguishing between consensual or coerced, partner or third-party-mediated exchanges, while anxiety, depression, and stress were assessed as dependent variables. The analysis identified four distinct clusters: Low-Engagement Sexting (60.4%), Sexting wi…

Vitamin D Receptor (VDR) Polymorphisms and Cardiometabolic Profiles in Orthopedic Patients: A Cluster-Based Analysis.

Genetic polymorphisms contribute to inter-individual variability in cardiometabolic risk and quality-of-life outcomes, yet their clinical relevance often remains unclear due to population heterogeneity and reliance on single-variant analyses. Integrative approaches combining genetic and phenotypic data may improve the characterization of complex disease profiles, particularly in orthopedic populations burdened by cardiometabolic comorbidities. This study included 289 patients scheduled for orthopedic surgery. Polymorphisms in the vitamin D receptor (VDR; ApaI, FokI, BsmI), catechol-O-methyltra

Engagement and Retention in Precision Public Health: A Cascade Analysis of Two Cluster Randomized Trials.

INTRODUCTION: When research fails to reach and engage all populations who might benefit from study findings, it can compromise scientific validity and ultimately health equity. Few studies have systematically examined factors driving study engagement through longitudinal intervention research. This project examined sociodemographic, geographic, and structural influences on engagement and attrition across the participation "cascade" (outreach, enrollment, retention) for two large-scale multilevel precision medicine and precision prevention trials for smoking and lung cancer screening. METHODS:

Substance involvement profiles and mental health correlates in emerging adults: a person-centred cluster analysis.

BACKGROUND: Involvement with psychoactive substances among emerging adults varies considerably in its frequency, severity, and co-occurrence. Person-centred approaches, which identify groups of individuals with shared patterns of substance involvement, may provide a more nuanced understanding of psychosocial risk than traditional substance-specific analyses. This study aimed to identify distinct substance involvement profiles among Colombian university students and examine differences in depression, anxiety, and suicide risk across these profiles, as well as sociodemographic predictors of prof
