Contraceptive and condom use among women from key populations in Myanmar.

BACKGROUND: Contraceptive and condom use remain low among women in marginalized communities, including those who sell sex, use or inject drugs, or are sexual partners of people who use or inject drugs (key populations). This study examines how selling sex and drug use relate to contraceptive and condom use with different partner types in Myanmar, alongside structural risk contexts. METHODS: We analyzed a cross-sectional survey among women from key populations (women who sell sex, use drugs, or are sexual partners of men who use drugs) recruited through community-based organizations across fou

Condom Acquisition, Errors, and Breakage among U.S. Cisgender College Students.

High rates of sexually transmitted infections and unplanned pregnancy continue to plague young adults in the USA with low condom use a contributing factor. To better understand condom acquisition, errors, and breakage among US cisgender college students, a survey was conducted across six structurally diverse institutions of higher education in 2019-2020 prior to the COVID-19 pandemic. Students who had used external condoms in the last year (N = 1584) were asked about specific on- and off-campus locations of condom acquisition and practices related to condom use. Findings indicate that students…

Systematic Review of Peer-Reviewed Literature on Global Condom Promotion Programs.

Background: Globally, 1.7 million people were newly infected with HIV in 2018. Condoms are inexpensive, cost-effective, reduce HIV/STI incidence, morbidity, mortality, and unintended pregnancies, and result in health care cost savings. Given the rapid increase in at-risk adolescent and young adult (AYA) populations in countries with high HIV/STI prevalence as well as the reductions in donor support, promoting consistent condom use remains crucial. We synthesized all peer-reviewed literature on condom promotion programs with a focus on promotion in low and lower middle income (LMIC) countries a…

A new measurement of an indirect measure of condom use and its relationships with barriers.

One of the challenges facing researchers in the domain of human immunodeficiency virus prevention is the assessment of condom use in an unbiased self-reported manner. The current study presents the development and preliminary validation of an indirect condom use test (I-CUTE), designed to assess condom use tendencies and to overcome self-report biases. Two samples were included using correlational designs. In sample 1, 88 students from European university completed the I-CUTE with questionnaires of condom use barriers, social desirability, and condom use negotiation self-efficacy. In sample 2,

Multiple partners and condom use among students at a South African University.

The prevalence of HIV in sub-Saharan Africa is the highest in the world. Young people, including university students, are at risk. Many sexu … transmitted disease risk reduction interventions must address unprotected coitus and failure to use condoms among university students reporting multiple partners.

Knowledge, attitude and practices associated with condom use among antenatal women.

The basic principles of HIV prevention lay emphasis on three important behaviours: abstinence, monogamous relationship and condom use. Among the three, condoms use alone can reduce the likelihood of infection by 90 percent. A quantitative study using interview schedule was conducted in which 100 women were interviewed. Simple random sampling technique was used to draw the required number of subjects from the sampling frame. The study revealed that the condom use as means of protection against HIV in India is low though it has been successful as a means of family planning device, since 70 perce…

Factors associated with HIV testing and condom use in Mozambique: implications for programs.

BACKGROUND: To identify predictors of HIV testing and condom use in Mozambique. METHODS: Nationally representative survey data collected in Mozambique in 2009 was analyzed. Logistic regression analysis was used for two outcomes: HIV testing and condom use. RESULTS: Women at a higher risk of HIV were less likely to be tested for HIV than women at a lower risk: compared to married women, HIV testing was lower among never married women (OR = 0.37, CI: 0.25-0.54); compared to women with one lifetime partner, HIV testing was lower among women with four or more lifetime partners (OR = 0.62, CI: 0.

Reactions of heterosexual African American men to women's condom negotiation strategies.

This study describes responses of 172 single heterosexual African American men, ages 18 to 35, to condom negotiation attempts. Strategies used included reward, coercive, legitimate, expert, referent, and informational strategies, based on Raven's (1992) influence model. The purpose was (a) to identify strategies influencing participant acquiescence to request and (b) to identify predictors of participant compliance/refusal to comply with negotiation attempts. Participants viewed six videotape segments showing an actress, portrayed in silhouette, speaking to the viewer as a "steady partner." Af

Condom use and duration of concurrent partnerships among men in the United States.

OBJECTIVES: Concurrent partnerships accelerate dissemination of STIs. Most investigations of the features of concurrent partnerships have fo … r, one or both concurrent partners of each pair and characteristics of men more likely to have used condoms with neither sex partner. RESULTS: The duration of overlap was <1 month in 32%, 1 to 3 months in 19%, and >12 months in 25% of concurrency pairs. Half (55%) of the pairs (whites, 64%; blacks, 41%) involved unprotected sex at the last sexual interco …

Anal use of the female condom: does uncertainty justify provider inaction?

Despite limited safety data and the absence of efficacy data, several studies have reported that the female condom is being used for anal sex by men who have sex with men. We describe providers' awareness of female condom use during anal sex among their clients and their experiences in counseling clients. We conducted semi-structured interviews with 78 health-care providers recruited from various health-care delivery systems in New York City: a family planning agency, a sexually transmitted infection agency, a hospital-based obstetrics and gynecology clinic, and two community-based AIDS servic

Understanding the dynamics of condom use among female sex workers in China.

OBJECTIVES AND BACKGROUND: Condom use within the context of commercial sex work is a complex issue. Drawing on a hypothesized theoretical model that combines concepts from the health belief model and social cognitive theory, this study examines the complex relationships between multiple levels of determinant factors of condom use with clients among female sex workers in China. METHODS: Data were collected through the baseline survey of an HIV prevention project among 454 establishment-based female sex workers in a rural county of Guangxi, China in 2004. Path analysis was performed to test the

A 15-minute interactive, computerized condom use intervention with biological endpoints.

BACKGROUND: Brief face-to-face-behavioral interventions have been shown to be efficacious, but are costly to sustain and to widely disseminate. This study evaluated the efficacy of a 15-minute theory-based behavioral intervention designed to increase condom use and reduce new cases of Neisseria gonorrhoeae and Chlamydia trachomatis. METHODS: Participants were randomly assigned via the computer to the intervention or the comparison group stratified by gender and their baseline stage of change (motivational readiness) for using condoms consistently (100%) with their main partners. Behavioral da…

Drinking and condom use: results from an event-based daily diary.

Although it is often assumed that drinking alcohol interferes with condom use, most studies on this topic do not meet the conditions required for causal interpretation. We examined the association of drinking to condom use using data from diaries of alcohol use and sexual encounters, collected over 8 weeks from college students and clients of a sexually transmitted disease clinic. This method establishes the temporal relationships between drinking and condom use and controls for individual differences by using a within-subjects analysis. Multilevel models that predicted condom use from alcohol

A qualitative study of condom use among married couples in Kampala, Uganda.

Twenty-five years into the HIV/AIDS epidemic, condom use among married/stable couples remains low and under-researched in developing countries, even countries with high HIV prevalence. Introducing condoms into a long-standing relationship, in spite of HIV risk, is likely to be awkward. We conducted a qualitative study in Kampala, Uganda, with 39 couples reporting 100% condom use in the previous three months. The women were recruited from among women in a clinical trial who were using condoms and whose partners also agreed to participate. Twenty-two of the women and six of the men reported havi…

An intervention to promote the female condom to sexually transmitted disease clinic patients.

This article describes a 1-hour behavioral intervention designed to promote female condoms and safer sex to women at a high risk for sexually transmitted diseases (STDs). The intervention includes a promotional videotape; a skills-oriented counseling session with a nurse clinician; assorted take-home items, including a videotape for men; and free supplies of female and male condoms. Designed for women ages 18 to 34 attending public STD clinics, the intervention is developed using a systematic process of formative evaluation influenced by principles of social marketing and drawing on the social…
