Factory-Calibrated Continuous Glucose Monitoring System Accuracy During Exercise in Adolescents With Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus.

BACKGROUND: Continuous glucose monitors (CGMs) are widely used for individuals with diabetes mellitus, particularly those with type 1 diabetes (T1D). Advancements in CGM technology allow for glycemic assessment without capillary glucose measurements as many come factory calibrated. However, exercise, an essential component of diabetes care, has been reported to alter accuracy of earlier generation CGM. Considering the importance of physical activity for individuals with T1D and the progression of CGM technology, we aimed to investigate the accuracy of the Dexcom G6 during physical activity. M

Continuous Glucose Monitoring in Young Adults With Type 1 Diabetes: Impact on Hypoglycemia Confidence and Fear.

BACKGROUND: Fear of hypoglycemia in people with type 1 diabetes has a detrimental effect on glycemic control and quality of life. The association between continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) and hypoglycemia confidence and fear has not previously been assessed in the young adult population. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort study using questionnaires to assess the impact of CGM on hypoglycemia confidence (using the Hypoglycemia Confidence Scale [HCS]) and hypoglycemia fear (using the Hypoglycemia Fear Survey II [HFS]) in 40 young adults with a preexisting diagnosis of type 1 diabetes. RE…

Multilevel clustering approach driven by continuous glucose monitoring data for further classification of type 2 diabetes.

INTRODUCTION: Mining knowledge from continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) data to classify highly heterogeneous patients with type 2 diabetes according to their characteristics remains unaddressed. A refined clustering method that retrieves hidden information from CGM data could provide a viable method to identify patients with different degrees of dysglycemia and clinical phenotypes. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: From Shanghai Jiao Tong University Affiliated Sixth People's Hospital, we selected 908 patients with type 2 diabetes (18-83 years) who wore blinded CGM sensors (iPro2, Medtronic, Calif…

Continuous glucose monitoring systems - Current status and future perspectives of the flagship technologies in biosensor research.

Diabetes mellitus is a chronic illness in the United States affecting nearly 120 million adults, as well as increasing in children under the age of 18. Diabetes was also the 7th leading cause of death in the United States with 270 K deaths in 2017. Diabetes is best managed by tight glycemic control, as achieving near-normal glucose levels is key to reduce the risk of microvascular complications. Currently, continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) systems have been recognized as the ideal monitoring systems for glycemic control of diabetic patients. Briefly, a CGM system measures blood glucose level…

Glycemic variability determined with a continuous glucose monitoring system can predict prognosis after acute coronary syndrome.

BACKGROUND: Impaired glucose metabolism is an established risk factor for coronary artery disease. Previous studies revealed that glycemic variability (GV) is also important for glucose metabolism in patients with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). We explored the association between GV and prognosis in patients with ACS. METHODS: A total of 417 patients with ACS who received reperfusion wore a continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) in a stable phase after admission and were monitored for at least 24 consecutive h. The mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE) was calculated as a marker of…

Continuous glucose monitoring reveals abnormal features of postprandial glycemic excursions in women with polycystic ovarian syndrome.

BACKGROUND: To determine the features of postprandial glycemic excursions (PPGEs) in patients with polycystic ovarian syndrome (PCOS) using continuous glucose monitoring (CGM). METHODS: Forty-five women with PCOS and normal glucose tolerance and 45 healthy, age-matched women (control group) underwent a 3-day period of blood glucose (BG) monitoring using the CGM system. The glycemic level was calculated as the mean level of 24-hour BG value (MBG), and intra-day glycemic excursions were calculated as standard deviation of BG (SDBG) and mean amplitude of glycemic excursion (MAGE). Postprandial g…

[How the continuous glucose monitoring system can contribute to HbA1c interpretation in type 1 diabetes mellitus?].

The aim of the present study is a literature revision of the contribution of continuous glucose monitoring system (CGMS) in the interpretation of HbA1c levels in type 1 diabetes (T1DM). We performed a revision of the efficacy, benefits, interpretation of methods and experience with this system. The CGMS could be useful in T1DM patients that present great glycemic variability or severe hypoglycemia (mainly nocturnal) and postprandial hyperglycemia. The identification of altered patterns or the glycemic variability allows therapeutic adjustment and improvement of the metabolic control. CGMS is a…

Efficacy of continuous glucose monitoring in comparison to self-blood glucose monitoring in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus under insulin treatment: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Diabetes Mellitus (DM) affects approximately 10.5% of the global population, necessitating effective glucose monitoring to mitigate complications. Self-monitored blood glucose (SMBG) lacks dynamic glycemic profiling, while continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) provides real-time/intermittent data. This review compares CGM and SMBG in insulin-treated type 2 diabetes (T2DM) patients. METHOD: A systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials (RCTs) from PubMed, Web of Science, and Scopus was conducted until May 2025 and included RCTs compared CGM with SMBG in terms o…

Optimal model-based insulin bolus advisor for subjects with type 1 diabetes using continuous glucose monitoring.

This paper presents an optimal model-based bolus advisor aimed at improving insulin therapy for individuals with type 1 diabetes who actively utilize continuous glucose monitoring systems. The proposed approach serves as an advanced advisory system, facilitating decision-making for insulin administration. Unlike traditional artificial pancreas systems, which rely on continuous insulin delivery and equidistant control decisions at each sampling interval, this bolus advisor considers sparse and impulse-like insulin administration without the basal component, solely disturbance-triggered to optim…
