[Clinical features in subjects with congenital anomalies of the corpus callosum].

The corpus callosum is a connecting structure between the two cerebral hemispheres. Its development occurs between 8th and 20th week of gestation. Anomalies of the corpus callosum are divided into malformative or acquired anomalies and may be isolated or associated with other cerebral malformations. The diagnosis of an alteration of the corpus callosum is fundamentally based on neuroradiological examinations. In our study we evaluate the major clinical findings, the psychomotor development, the electroencephalographic and neuroradiological features in a group of 14 children with congenital cal…

Dysgenesis of the corpus callosum and associated telencephalic anomalies: MRI.

We analysed the MRI findings in 23 patients with callosal dysgenesis in relation to their associated telencephalic anomalies to investigate the morphological significance of the development of Probst's bundles and the anterior commissure in congenital callosal dysgenesis. We classified callosal dysgenesis into three types: total defect (9 patients), partial defect (7) and hypoplasia (7). Associated anomalies were observed in 15 patients, including migration disorder (8 patients), micrencephaly (5), and lipoma (2). The remaining 8 patients had no associated anomalies. Probst's bundles were not

Corpus callosum morphology, as measured with MRI, in dyslexic men.

To test the hypothesis of anomalous anatomy in posterior brain regions associated with language and reading, the corpus callosum was imaged in the midsagittal plane with magnetic resonance. The areas of the anterior, middle, and posterior segments were measured in 21 dyslexic men (mean age 27 yrs, SD 6) and in 19 matched controls. As predicted, the area of the posterior third of the corpus callosum, roughly equivalent to the isthmus and splenium, was larger in dyslexic men than in controls. No differences were seen in the anterior or middle corpus callosum. The increased area of the posterior …

MR imaging of spastic diplegia. The importance of corpus callosum.

PURPOSE: The MR findings in patients with spastic diplegia were investigated and the role of MR imaging in assessing the extent of brain inj … nvolved site. Objective measurements revealed significant reductions of the entire sagittal area of corpus callosum in diplegic patients in comparison with normal controls. The motor palsy severity correlated well with the extent of corpus callosum involvement. CONCLUSION: The corpus callosum appears to be a sensitive marker site for the assessment of the extent …

[Dysconnection syndrome in a boy with tumorous lesion of corpus callosum].

We report on a 12-years-old boy with glioma of the septum pellucidum which invaded and infiltrated the adjacent structures including neocort … e alien hand syndrome, reported earlier. The general dysconnection syndrome caused by lesion of the corpus callosum, was associated with cognitive dysfunctions. Attention, memory and speech disorders were attributed to the progressive extra-callosal cerebral neoplastic lesion. The neurosurgical treatment was performed by transcallosal anterior approach. On neurop …

High risk pregnancy in a patient with angioma of the corpus callosum.

Literature data indicate that rupture of arterovenous malformations is 4 times more frequent in pregnant women. The Authors present a case of cerebral hemangioma of the third medium anterior of the corpus callosum diagnosed in a patient at the 28th gestational week by Magnetic Resonance scan. The patient underwent elective caesarean section under peripheral anesthesia (peridural and spinal block by Bupivacaine) and delivered a male infant 4560 gr, 52 cm. The postoperative course was uneventful. The arterovenous malformation constituted an important anesthesiologic risk factor but the Authors c…

Schizophrenia and the corpus callosum: developmental, structural and functional relationships.

Several empirical and theoretical connections exist between schizophrenia and the corpus callosum: (1) disconnection symptoms resemble certain psychotic phenomena; (2) abnormal interhemispheric transmission could explain typically schizophrenic phenomena; (3) cases of psychosis have been found in association with complete and partial agenesis of the callosum; (4) experimental neuropsychology with schizophrenic patients has revealed abnormal patterns of interhemispheric transfer; (5) studies using magnetic resonance imaging have shown abnormal callosal dimensions in schizophrenic patients. The …

Agenesis of the corpus callosum with mental retardation and osseous lesions.

We report on a patient with agenesis of corpus callosum, mental retardation, and unusual hitherto undescribed bone changes. The latter include multiple Wormian bones, thin ribs, short, straight, laterally tapering clavicles, small iliac bodies, high iliac angles, triangular areas of sclerosis in the iliac bones, minimal metaphyseal irregularity, striated trabecular pattern in some metaphyses, granular ossification pattern of the patellae, hypoplastic distal phalanges, minimal flatness of phalangeal epiphyses, and retarded bone age. This patient represents a new mental retardation syndrome with…

Giant interhemispheric cysts associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum.

Interhemispheric cysts, often associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum, are rare lesions demonstrating little uniformity of pathogenesis. Four large interhemispheric cystic lesions with several unique features are reviewed. Magnetic resonance imaging clearly showed agenesis of the corpus callosum and was useful in the diagnosis of interhemispheric cysts. The differential diagnosis of these lesions is discussed, along with therapeutic considerations.

Unlayered polymicrogyria and agenesis of the corpus callosum: a relevant association?

Three anatomical cases of unlayered polymicrogyria associated with agenesis of the corpus callosum and heterotopias are presented. The cortical dysplasia includes: (1) thin unlayered cortical mantle with radial disposition but no horizontal organisation of the neurons; (2) microgyria with fused molecular layers; and (3) persisting transitory cells in the molecular layer (Cajal-Retzius cells, subpial granular layer). A Golgi study of the cortex in one case shows abnormal orientation of the neuronal dendritic tree in the superficial area along the fused molecular layers. Heterotopias are of two …

Dysplasia of the corpus callosum in identical twins with nonketotic hyperglycinemia.

Nonketotic hyperglycinemia (NKH) is an autosomal recessively inherited disorder of the glycine degradation pathway leading to accumulation of glycine in body fluids and tissues. Identical twins with nonketotic hyperglycinemia and dysplasia of the corpus callosum are described in support of the hypothesis that some patients with NKH have a genetic defect of the glycine degradation pathway resulting in abnormal corpus callosal development. It is important to screen for metabolic defects whenever similar structural defects are present.

Lipoma of the corpus callosum associated with frontal and facial anomalies.

Seven patients with a corpus callosum lipoma associated with a frontal cranial defect with or without a superficial lipoma or a fronto-nasal dysplasia, were encountered over a period of 12 years. This group of patients is reported as these associated lesions may provide a lead to the cause of lipomas of the corpus callosum as well as of the different lesions in the fronto-facial region. From our experience and that of others, the frontal lesion may be an extracranial lipoma, a frontal bone defect, with or without an external lipoma, a lipomeningocele connecting the extracranial lipoma through …

The controversy about a sexual dimorphism of the human corpus callosum.

A sexual dimorphism of the splenium corporis callosi in man was reported in 1982. The authors described the posterior part of the female corpus callosum to be larger and more bulbous than its male counterpart. From the lateralization research, it has previously been stated that the female brain is less well lateralized for visuospatial functions than the male. The authors postulated that a larger splenium implies a larger number of fibers and that the number of interhemispheric fibers correlates inversely with lateralization of function. However, their sample was very small and not adequately …

Partial section of the corpus callosum: focal signs and their recovery.

A 30-year-old woman underwent surgical partial callosotomy (posterior half) for removal of an arteriovenous malformation. The patient submitted to neuropsychological evaluation before and after surgery for a period of 8 months. There was transient dysfunction attributable to disconnection of parietal, temporal, and occipital connections. Because the symptoms disappeared over time, we conclude that the transcallosal surgical approach can, in the long term, be considered a relatively harmless method.

Anomalies of the corpus callosum: correlation with further anomalies of the brain.

The MR imaging studies of 68 patients who had brain anomalies were reviewed retrospectively to evaluate specific anatomic abnormalities of the corpus callosum. The corpus callosum was abnormal in 32 (47%) of the 68 patients. Excluding patients with the Chiari I malformation, callosal anomalies were present in 30 (68%) of 44 patients. Callosal dysgenesis was most common, followed by callosal atrophy or hypoplasia and complete agenesis. The anterior commissure was present in all patients. On the basis of the known temporal sequence of brain and callosal embryogenesis, we deduced the following re…
