OBJECTIVE: Establish a pattern of behavior and treatment algorithm at the onset of hematuria in patients with a previous history of pelvic radiation, checking for this different treatment options reflected in the literature.

We describe a case of simultaneous severe lupus enteritis and lupus cystitis in a 38-year-old female with a 21-year history of systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). Polypoid cystitis is a rare disease of the urinary bladder in dogs characterized by inflammation, epithelial proliferation, and development of a polypoid mass or masses without histopathologic evidence of neoplasia. Medical records of 17 dogs with polypoid cystitis were reviewed to determine the clinical and laboratory features of this disorder and to assess treatment and outcome. Encrusted cystitis is a rare condition characterised by the formation of calcified plaques adherent to or embedded in the bladder mucosa. Although chronic infection with urea-splitting organisms is a prerequisite, other factors seem to play an important role in its development. We report our experience of 4 such cases in which encrusted cystitis presented with various symptoms, produced different pathological abnormalities and was treated by different means in each patient.

The bladder mast cell contains many granules, each one of which can secrete many vasoactive and nociceptive molecules. A number of conditions such as extreme cold, drugs, neuropeptides, stress, trauma, toxins, etcetera, can trigger the mast cell to secrete some of its contents. Chronic irradiation cystitis may cause fibrosis and weakening of the detrusor, with greater susceptibility of the bladder wall to endoscopic trauma. We lately treated a patient with chronic irradiation cystitis who sustained recurrent bladder perforation, one after electrohydraulic lithotripsy and the other--following cystoscopy. The first event was handled surgically and the second one in a conservative approach. We hereby report on the case and comment on the etiology.
