Reduced neural sensitivity to rapid individual face discrimination in autism spectrum disorder.

BACKGROUND: Individuals with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) are characterized by impairments in social communication and interaction. Although difficulties at processing social signals from the face in ASD have been observed and emphasized for many years, there is a lot of inconsistency across both behavioral and neural studies. METHODS: We recorded scalp electroencephalography (EEG) in 23 8-to-12 year old boys with ASD and 23 matched typically developing boys using a fast periodic visual stimulation (FPVS) paradigm, providing objective (i.e., frequency-tagged), fast (i.e., few minutes) and h

On the edge: haptic discrimination of edge sharpness.

The increasing ubiquity of haptic displays (e.g., smart phones and tablets) necessitates a better understanding of the perceptual capabilities of the human haptic system. Haptic displays will soon be capable of locally deforming to create simple 3D shapes. This study investigated the sensitivity of our haptic system to a fundamental component of shapes: edges. A novel set of eight high quality shape stimuli with test edges that varied in sharpness were fabricated in a 3D printer. In a two alternative, forced choice task, blindfolded participants were presented with two of these shapes side by

Localization of speed differences of context stimuli during fixation and smooth pursuit eye movements.

The visual system can detect speed changes of moving objects only by means of alterations of retinal image motion, which is also subject to changes induced by head or eye movements. Here we investigated whether smooth pursuit eye movements affect the ability to localize short speed perturbations of large context stimuli. Psychophysical thresholds for localization, discrimination and detection of speed perturbations in one of two context stimuli were measured under two main conditions: in fixation trials subjects fixated a central stationary spot, in pursuit trials they followed a horizontally

Pure agnosia for mirror stimuli after right inferior parietal lesion.

This study reports the experimental investigation of G.R., a patient suffering from a highly specific disorder in discriminating mirror stimuli following a right temporoparietal cerebrovascular accident. G.R. showed intact perceptual, attentional, mnestic, linguistic and executive abilities. Object recognition was accurate even under unusual viewing conditions. He was highly accurate in defining the canonical orientation of common objects and in discriminating misoriented objects among identical distracters. However, he was severely impaired in tasks requiring mirror-stimulus discrimination, a

Motion direction discrimination in blind hemifields.

We tested motion direction discrimination with random dot cinematograms (RDCs) projected into the contralateral homonymous visual field defects of 10 patients with unilateral cerebral hemispheric lesions. Five patients had medial occipital lesions that spared the putative motion area in lateral occipitotemporal cortex and the optic radiations and other white matter tracts proximal to this site. The other 5 had lesions involving this area or the proximal optic radiations. Eye position was monitored to ensure fixation. No patient in either group discriminated motion direction in signal/noise RDC

Olfactory function in patients with hypogonadotropic hypogonadism: an all-or-none phenomenon?

Hypogonadotropic hypogonadism (HH) refers to an endocrine defect of hypothalamic origin resulting in gonadal hypoplasia and frequently associated with anosmia or severely impaired olfactory function (Kallmann's syndrome). This apparently results from a disruption in the migration of neurons from the olfactory placode to the bulb and hypothalamus early in development, and so provides a unique opportunity to investigate olfactory function in human subjects with congenitally incomplete peripheral systems. Olfactory performance in 37 HH patients and 37 age-matched controls was compared using a mod

Brain mapping in dysphonemic dyslexia: in resting and phonemic discrimination conditions.

Topographic mapping of EEG bands and alpha asymmetry were analyzed during resting conditions and an auditory phonemic discrimination task (APD) in carefully screened samples of 9.0- to 12-year-old control and dysphonemic-sequencing dyslexic children. The EEG was recorded over the entire scalp, with a linked ears reference. We found: (1) no differences between groups during resting conditions in any frequency band analyzed; (2) a left hemisphere alpha responsiveness in dyslexic children during the APD condition; and (3) a beta 2 decrease in the left posterior quadrant in dyslexics during the AP

Object and observer motion in the perception of objects by infants.

Sixteen-week-old human infants distinguish optical displacements given by their own motion from displacements given by moving objects, and they use only the latter to perceive the unity of partly occluded objects. Optical changes produced by moving the observer around a stationary object produced attentional levels characteristic of stationary observers viewing stationary displays and much lower than those shown by stationary observers viewing moving displays. Real displacements of an object with no subject-relative displacement, produced by moving an object so as to maintain a constant relati

[Short-term fluctuation of light discrimination sensitivity at the borders of glaucomatous visual field defects].

Using profile program F-4 of the Octopus 201 computerized perimeter, retinal light sensitivity and threshold short-term fluctuations were studied in 15 eyes of 15 patients with glaucomatous field defects, with a resolution of 1.5 degrees. The scotomata were verified with programs 33 and 34 of the Octopus 201. Control profiles, either at identical locations in the healthy fellow eye or in areas showing no glaucomatous changes, were used to compare focal fluctuation in the vicinity of the scotoma. At the borders of the scotomata, between 20 degrees and 30 degrees eccentricity, a significant incr

Discriminative stimulus effects of pentobarbital in rhesus monkeys: tests of stimulus generalization and duration of action.

Rhesus monkeys were trained to emit 20 or 30 consecutive responses on one lever following an IM injection of pentobarbital (10 or 18 mg/kg) and the same number of consecutive responses on another lever following an injection of saline. The required number of correct consecutive responses in both cases resulted in food delivery. When responding was reliably under the control of the presession injection, the ability of a variety of other compounds to produce pentobarbital-appropriate responding was examined. Diazepam, clobazam, methohexital, pentobarbital, and phenobarbital, given 10 or 20 min b

Trajectories of racial discussion and parental depression in Asian American families.

ABSTRACTRacial-ethnic socialization (RES) is a critical parenting practice among Asian American parents, yet little is known about its impact on parental mental health. Drawing on Lazarus and Folkman's (1984) transactional model of stress and coping, this longitudinal study examined trajectories of three RES domains (awareness of discrimination, avoidance of outgroups, minimization of race) and their associations with depressive symptoms among 209 Asian American parents (mean age 41.68; 79.43% female) over 12 months. Using growth mixture modeling, three distinct trajectory classes emerged for

Auditory processing deficits in reading disabled adults.

The nature of the auditory processing deficit of disabled readers is still an unresolved issue. The quest for a fundamental, nonlinguistic, perceptual impairment has been dominated by the hypothesis that the difficulty lies in processing sequences of stimuli at presentation rates of tens of milliseconds. The present study examined this hypothesis using tasks that require processing of a wide range of stimulus time constants. About a third of the sampled population of disabled readers (classified as "poor auditory processors") had difficulties in most of the tasks tested: detection of frequency

Differentiating benzodiazepine- and barbiturate-like discriminative stimulus effects of lorazepam, diazepam, pentobarbital, imidazenil and zaleplon in two- versus three-lever procedures.

Previous studies found that animals trained to discriminate pentobarbital show a relatively inclusive generalization profile. They generalize to sedative-hypnotics and anxiolytics, regardless of differences among such drugs in molecular mechanism of action. In contrast, animals trained to discriminate lorazepam have shown a generalization profile that appears selective for compounds with in-vitro profiles as full agonists at the benzodiazepine modulatory site. The present study investigated whether benzodiazepine receptor ligands, to which pentobarbital-trained rats had generalized under a two

Differential effects of anticholinergic drugs on paired discrimination performance.

Working and reference memory processes were simultaneously evaluated during the performance of a paired discrimination (PD) task in which visual and spatial discrimination trials were combined within the same session. Atropine (1 and 5 mg/kg), scopolamine (0.02-0.20 mg/kg), benactyzine (1-4 mg/kg), trihexyphenidyl (1-10 mg/kg), and aprophen (5-20 mg/kg) were all found to increase the number of errors performed by overtrained rats during the spatial but not during the visual trials. Although all the anticholinergic drugs tested induced specific working memory impairment at low doses, they diffe

Assessing microprocess clinical discrimination in psychodynamic psychotherapy: A vignette-based approach with expert consensus and sensitivity to structured exposure.

OBJECTIVE: This study examined the development of a vignette-based instrument to assess therapists' microprocess-level clinical discrimination, the ability to identify and differentiate moment-to-moment psychological dynamics within therapeutic dialogue. Addressing a gap in psychotherapy process research, we evaluated whether this capacity can be systematically articulated and measured using a structured, dimensional framework. METHOD: Fifty-three participants (36 trainees, 17 experienced clinicians) completed a vignette-based questionnaire before and after structured exposure to the Dimensio

Conditional discrimination of electroencephalogram alpha amplitudes in humans.

Conditional discrimination of high and low alpha amplitudes of electroencephalogram by humans was demonstrated in the 1950s. Despite several attempts, the original finding was only replicated once, but discrimination accuracy in the replication was only slightly above chance level and confounds may have contributed to it. Potential confounds included a systematic difference in time to exceed thresholds for high and low amplitudes (i.e., temporal cue), unequal numbers of high- and low-amplitude trials, and short trial durations that allowed for correct choices in a preceding trial to serve as a

Sparse input representations explain odor discrimination in complex, concentration-varying mixtures.

In natural environments, animals must detect behaviorally relevant odors despite variability in both odor mixture composition and stimulus intensity. Although mice can identify salient odors embedded in complex mixtures, how target concentration and background complexity jointly constrain discrimination remains unclear. We trained mice in a two-alternative forced choice task to identify target odors embedded in mixtures containing up to 16 background components. After performance stabilized, we systematically varied target odor concentration. Discrimination accuracy declined with decreasing ta
