Intraretinal and intra-optic nerve head silicone oil vacuoles using adaptive optics.

The authors report the in vivo visualization through multimodal imaging of silicone oil in the vitreous cavity, optic nerve, and retina of a patient 11 years after surgical removal of the main tamponade. Contact B-scan ultrasonography revealed countless small echogenic particles in the vitreous cavity and a hyperreflective structure within the optic nerve head. Swept-source optical coherence tomography showed multiple round hyporeflective spaces within the substance of the prelaminar optic nerve head. Adaptive optics imaging revealed numerous particles in the optic nerve head and within the re

Artificial iris-intraocular lens implantation for traumatic aniridia and aphakia assisted by silicone oil retention sutures.

UNLABELLED: An 83-year-old pseudophakic woman fell and sustained an open-globe injury to her left eye with traumatic aniridia, aphakia, and a total retinal detachment. Visual acuity was light perception. After primary repair of the ruptured globe, the retina was reattached using silicone oil tamponade with placement of silicone oil retention sutures to prevent the oil from touching the corneal endothelium. Three months later, the oil was removed and with glare, aphakic correction improved the patient's visual acuity to 20/80(-1). A scleral-fixated artificial iris-intraocular lens (IOL) was sub

Displacement of Submacular Hemorrhage With Subretinal Injection of Recombinant Tissue Plasminogen Activator and Gas Tamponade in the Setting of Myopic Degeneration.

Myopic submacular hemorrhage (SMH) usually arises from either a break in Bruch's membrane (lacquer cracks) that damages the underlying choriocapillaris or the development of a choroidal neovascular membrane (CNVM) at the sites of prior lacquer cracks.1,2 In pathologic myopia (PM), axial elongation leads to thinning of the choroid and retinal pigment epithelium, predisposing to rupture of Bruch's membrane.3 If large hemorrhages involving the fovea are left untreated, subretinal hemorrhage and CNVM can cause devastating long-term vision loss due to irreversible retinal atrophy.4 In this video, t

Optical coherence tomography angiography evaluation of retinal and choriocapillaris changes after pars plana vitrectomy for macula-off rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: perfluoropropane versus silicone oil tamponade.

BACKGROUND: Rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) with macular involvement may lead to persistent visual impairment despite successful anatomical repair. Different intravitreal tamponade agents used during pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) may variably affect retinal and choroidal microcirculation. This study aimed to evaluate longitudinal changes in retinal vascular layers and choriocapillaris flow (CCF) using optical coherence tomography angiography (OCT-A) in macula-off RRD eyes treated with perfluoropropane (C3F8) gas or silicone oil (SO) tamponade. METHODS: In this prospective cohort study, 3
