We studied the association between HIV-2 infection and bacterial pneumonia, sepsis or pyomyositis, as well as the influence of HIV-2 infection on the clinical outcome in patients with these bacterial infections. A total of 201 consecutive hospitalized patients were included at the Simao Mendes National Hospital in Bissau, Guinea-Bissau. BACKGROUND: Herpes Simplex Virus 2 (HSV-2) is one of the most common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) worldwide and is a risk factor for the acquisition and transmission of other STIs, including HIV. We determined the prevalence and predictors of HSV-2 infection among women screened for a HIV prevention trial in Durban, South Africa. Univariate and multivariate logistic and Cox regression models were used to determine the correlates and predictors of HSV-2 infection at enrolment and seroconversion during the study respectively.

Chronic HIV infection alters antiviral T cell responses and shapes their functional profiles. We combined HLA peptide tetramers with functional stimulation assays to characterize HIV-specific CD4+ and CD8+ T cells targeting immunodominant epitopes in chronically infected individuals. A novel series of ethyl ketone based HDACs 1, 2, and 3 selective inhibitors have been identified with good enzymatic and cellular activity and high selectivity over HDACs 6 and 8. These inhibitors contain a spirobicyclic group in the amide region. Compound 13 stands out as a lead due to its good potency, high selectivity, and reasonable rat and dog PK. BACKGROUND: Little is known about viral co-infections in African human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected children. We examined the prevalence of seromarkers for cytomegalovirus (CMV), herpes simplex virus type 2 (HSV-2) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) infections among HIV-infected, antiretroviral treatment (ART)-naïve children in Lilongwe, Malawi.
METHODS: Ninety-one serum samples were tested for IgG and IgM antibodies to CMV, and IgG antibodies to HSV-2 and hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg). Baseline demographic, clinical and laboratory data were abstracted from electronic records.

BACKGROUND: We examined human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) prevalence and correlates among female sex workers (FSWs) in Tijuana and Ciudad Juarez, 2 large cities on the Mexico-US border.
METHODS: FSWs aged > or =18 years underwent interviews and testing for HIV, syphilis, gonorrhea, and chlamydia. Logistic regression identified factors associated with HIV infection.

OBJECTIVES: This study investigated the impact of HIV voluntary counseling and testing (VCT) on reproduction planning among 1634 adults in 2 sub-Saharan countries.
METHODS: Data were obtained from a multisite randomized controlled trial.
RESULTS: At 6 months post-VCT, the women more likely to be pregnant were younger (odds ratio [OR] = 2.5; 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.0, 6.5), not using contraceptives (OR = 0.1; 95% CI = 0.1, 0.3), and HIV infected (OR = 3.0; 95% CI = 1.3, 7.0).
