Do dysfunctional metacognitive beliefs contribute to interpersonal distress beyond interpersonal styles, parental bonds, depression and anxiety? A prospective within-person study.

BACKGROUND: General interpersonal problems and distress are transdiagnostic features across the psychopathology spectrum and relate to reduced quality of life, greater emotional symptom severity, and worse outcomes following psychotherapy. Identifying within-person dynamic factors influencing interpersonal distress could therefore advance clinical formulation and intervention, benefiting a large number of patients. METHODS: Based on a four-wave longitudinal study, we used latent growth modelling to investigate whether metacognitive beliefs, the key mechanism of psychological dysfunction in th

Affiliative interpersonal behaviors during stress are associated with sleep quality and presleep arousal in young, healthy adults.

OBJECTIVES: This study examined the association between stress-related interpersonal behaviors, presleep arousal (PSA), and sleep quality. METHODS: Sixty-four participants (53% female) described a recent stressful interpersonal event that was coded for overall degree of affiliation (warmth vs hostility) and autonomy (independence vs interdependence). Cognitive and somatic PSA and sleep quality were examined using regression with affiliation and autonomy scores as predictors. Specific interpersonal behaviors that comprise overall affiliation were also examined. RESULTS: More affiliation (warm

Exploring peer loss and survivor guilt among young adult survivors of childhood cancer.

BACKGROUND: There are nearly 500,000 childhood cancer survivors in the United States, and emerging evidence suggests at least 25% of these survivors have lost a peer to cancer. The current study investigated the nature of peer loss in a sample of young adult survivors of childhood cancer. METHODS: Survivors (n = 63) completed an online survey including measures of peer loss, survivor guilt (Interpersonal Guilt Questionnaire) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTSS; Posttraumatic Stress Disorder Checklist for DSM-5). Relations between peer loss, survivor guilt, and PTSS were assessed. RESULTS

[Selection of knowledge translation strategies to implement best practices on nonpharmacological prevention of delirium in intensive care unit].

BACKGROUND: Delirium prevention in the ICU should focus on a non-pharmacological approach. However, these recommendations are not always applied by care providers. OBJECTIVE: To select knowledge translation strategies to facilitate the implementation of non-pharmacological best practices to prevent delirium in the ICU. METHOD: A consensus study was conducted. Barriers and facilitators to the implementation of nonpharmacological methods, and knowledge translation strategies, were identified in two nominal groups. A context assessment was also carried out. Nine professionals and one patient-pa

Nature and Assessment of Personality Pathology and Diagnosis.

This article demonstrates the contribution of Otto Kernberg's object relations theory of personality pathology to the current understanding of the nature and assessment of personality pathology and diagnosis. The article introduces recent advances in psychiatric nosology and presents differing views on the meaning of the general severity criterion common to all personality pathology (i.e., level of personality functioning as described in criterion A of the Alternative DSM-5 Model for Personality Disorders). Next, the significance of Kernberg's theory to recent nosological advances is discussed

Narcissistic Personality Disorder: Progress in Understanding and Treatment.

This review summarizes current knowledge about narcissistic personality disorder (NPD). Each section brings the reader up to date on advances in our knowledge during the last decade. In terms of NPD diagnosis, this review describes the addition of the dimensional model to the categorical model. The accumulating knowledge has led to the description of grandiose and vulnerable narcissism as well as their complex interrelationship. Strong support exists for co-occurrence of these presentations among people with high levels of grandiose narcissism. Studies have identified mechanisms, in domains su

Psychometric properties of the Marital Adjustment Scale during cognitive therapy for depression: New research opportunities.

Poor dyadic adjustment in marital or similar relationships is common among patients seeking individual cognitive therapy (CT) for major depressive disorder (MDD). Here we examined the psychometric properties of the marital adjustment subscale (MAS) of the Social Adjustment Scale-Self-report (SAS-SR; Weissman & Bothwell, 1976). Among married or cohabiting patients receiving individual CT for recurrent MDD (N = 306) in the context of two randomized controlled trials, the MAS demonstrated moderate internal consistency and test-retest reliability, strong convergence with the Dyadic Adjustment Scal

[Aggression as the cause of stress among physicians].

INTRODUCTION: Mental stress is inseparably connected with work. The stress reaction is favored by stagnation in life, lack of prospects for professional growth, uncertainty of stable employment, pressure to work reliably and flexibly, excessive workload, and lack of assigned duties. Interpersonal relations among members of the team represent another significant factor in the appearance and persistence of social pathology. STUDY OBJECTIVES: Identification of forms and sources of aggression implicated in stress among physicians at the workplace. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The study was performed in

Revisiting the validity of measures of social cognitive bias in schizophrenia: Additional results from the Social Cognition Psychometric Evaluation (SCOPE) study.

OBJECTIVE: The ongoing Social Cognition Psychometric Evaluation (SCOPE) study is in the process of forming a gold-standard battery of social cognition tests for use in clinical trials. Previous SCOPE phases have not acknowledged key differences between social cognition skills and biases, and psychometric validity analyses might provide important information if tailored to bias-related outcomes. This study aims to validate these measures with such bias-related outcomes. METHODS: Two measures of social cognitive bias - the Ambiguous Intention Hostility Questionnaire (AIHQ; hostile attribution b

Interpersonal Psychotherapy for Depression in Parkinson's Disease: A Feasibility Study.

Individuals living with Parkinson's disease (PD) experience interpersonal stressors that contribute to depressive risk. Interpersonal psychotherapy (IPT) emphasizes the bidirectional relationship between interpersonal stressors and mood may therefore be a suitable treatment for PD-depression. The primary aim of this study was to evaluate the feasibility of delivering 12 sessions of IPT to depressed PD patients and explore the need for modifications. A secondary aim was to obtain descriptive information about efficacy outcomes. The study used a pre-post design without a comparison group. Partic

An Other Perspective on Five Factor Machiavellianism.

Previous research has found that traditional assessments of Machiavellianism have insufficient construct coverage and strongly overlap with psychopathy. Tackling these issues, Collison et al. developed the Five Factor Machiavellianism Inventory (FFMI), comprising antagonism, agency, and planfulness. Research by Kückelhaus et al. strongly supports the FFMI's construct validity. However, both of these previous studies share the limitation of common source bias. Therefore, in this study, target participants provided the FFMI self-assessments and coworkers assessed targets in terms of social compe

Collective will: a reformulation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation.

A reevaluation of Otto Rank's theory of personality individuation has been proposed which equates collective and individual will as essential and mutually facilitative aspects of self-development. Rank's viewpoint regarding social and moral development as necessarily normative and, hence, inimical to individuation is therefore challenged and disputed. It is further argued that the nature of will is not a priori moral and that it should be conceptualized empirically as a derivative of the self. The negative will has been defined as the counterposition of two wills against each other. It has bee

Personality and treatment response in agoraphobia with panic attacks.

The present study investigated the association of specific personality characteristics with agoraphobia, and whether they predicted long-term outcome following a group cognitive behavior therapy program. Thirty-three patients with agoraphobia with panic attacks, 18 with social phobia, and 26 "normals" were used in the study. Personality factors were measured with the Maudsley Personality Inventory (MPI), the Hostility and Direction of Hostility Questionnaire (HDHQ), and the Fundamental Interpersonal Relations Orientation-Behavior Scale (FIRO-B). The results showed that (1) agoraphobics are mor

Comprehensive management of persistent somatization: an innovative inpatient program.

Psychiatry has been largely unsuccessful in developing effective treatment strategies for patients with chronic somatization. They continue to utilize a disproportionate share of health care resources and experience personal distress and significant social and occupational dysfunction. The Psychosomatic Medicine Unit at the Clarke Institute of Psychiatry is attempting to treat these patients with a comprehensive treatment program that takes into account the multifactorial etiology of the disturbance. The unit is in a tertiary care facility and the patient population is heterogeneous with respe

[Performance behaviour of the physically handicapped. Selected approaches and a comprehensive skeleton concept (author's transl)].

The article shows that psychology's current situation with its confusing variety of theories and methods and, accordingly, heterogeneous examination findings, is also reflected in the discussion about the performance behaviour of the physically handicapped. This fact made it necessary to apply different concepts of the so-called normal psychology to this particular field. On the basis of limited approaches which place organic impairments - perceptual disorders and motor disturbances due to organic brain damage - in the foreground, a description of other research lines is crried out, which not
