Toxoplasmosis manifesting as a parotid mass is rare; our review of the literature found only 6 previously reported cases. We report 2 new cases. Both patients presented with a small, mobile left parotid mass, and both were successfully treated with a diagnostic superficial parotidectomy. In both cases, the patient had been regularly exposed to cats and had recently eaten undercooked meat. When evaluating a parotid mass, otolaryngologists should be aware of the infectious causes of parotid swelling and lymphadenopathy and consider the possibility of toxoplasmosis when the history and pathologic

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the distribution of lymph nodes in the neck during the process of development of tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis (TCL) in patients attending an outpatient clinic over a 1-year period.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: This was a prospective, cross-sectional, observational study which included 100 cases of histopathologically confirmed TCL of >6 weeks duration.
RESULTS: Lymph nodes in the posterior triangle (PT) were found to be commonest (51%), followed by those in the upper deep cervical (UDC; 48%) and submandibular (SM; 36%) regions. The supra-clavicular (SC; 3%), submenta…

Both of tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis and tuberculous peritonitis are now rather rare in parallel with the decrease of the incidence of tuberculosis as a whole. Here, we report a case of tuberculous mesenteric lymphadenitis complicated with tuberculous peritonitis. A 28-year-old man was admitted to our hospital with pulmonary tuberculosis. Antituberculous chemotherapy was started and his chest X-ray findings were improved. After 11 weeks of the treatment, high fever of 39.0 degrees C developed suddenly and he complained right lower abdominal pain. During laparotomy performed on suspicio…

We describe a case of necrotizing histiocytic lymphadenitis or Kikuchi and Fujimoto disease, a rare lymphadenopathy of unknown etiology usually striking young women. It was formerly described in Japan, and subsequently in other countries and in Italy as an anatomo-clinical entity. The disease has a favourable prognosis, therefore it has to be considered differently from other lymphadenopathies with severe prognosis whose anatomo-pathological differential features were analyzed by the authors. The case here observed differs from other cases described in literature because of the presence of a p…

In the light of the relevant literature and personal cases, the author deals with swellings of the cervical lymph nodes which occur most frequently in childhood. Simultaneously, he pays attention to their differentiation from odontogenic inflammatory processes in the mandibular region, which is of importance from the viewpoint of stomatology. Of 402 soft-tissue inflammations in children 0 to 14 years of age, 211 (=52.5%) were odontogenic, whereas 191 were not. There were 173 cases of cervical lymphadenitis. The aetiology, genesis, clinical picture and distribution of this disease are treated i…

Tuberculosis (TB) is a communicable disease with high morbidity, significantly affecting quality of life. It has high prevalence in developing countries and is broadly categorized into pulmonary and extrapulmonary TB. The axillary lymph nodes are affected in around 3% of tuberculous lymphadenitis. However, isolated axillary TB lymphadenitis (without TB at other sites) is even rarer. It sometimes creates diagnostic difficulty, particularly in female patients, as even though the possibility of breast cancer presenting with only enlarged axillary lymph nodes (Occult Breast Cancer) is extremely ra…

INTRODUCTION: This case report presents a case of cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis (scrofula) in Wisconsin, illustrating the diagnostic challenges in a low-prevalence setting. It emphasizes the importance of including tuberculosis (TB) in the differential diagnosis of persistent cervical lymphadenopathy, particularly in patients with a history of latent TB infection.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 37-year-old woman presented with a persistent, painless left-sided neck mass without local warmth or erythema, characteristic of a cold abscess. Initial imaging demonstrated lymph node abnormalities, while …

INTRODUCTION: Cervical tuberculous lymphadenitis (CTL) represents a localized manifestation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in which immune responses are organized within lymphoid tissue. While cytotoxic lymphocyte responses contribute to antimycobacterial immunity, the cytokine networks coordinating these responses in human lymph node tuberculosis remain incompletely defined.
METHODS: We performed integrated immune profiling of patients with CTL (n = 60) and non-tuberculous cervical lymphadenopathy (CNTL; n = 44). Immune-gene expression was quantified in peripheral blood and lymph no…

BACKGROUND: Neck lymphadenopathy is frequently associated with infectious etiologies such as tuberculosis (TB); however, malignant conditions can present with similar clinical and radiological features, leading to diagnostic uncertainty and potential misdiagnosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We describe a 35-year-old immunocompetent man who presented with persistent fever and a progressively enlarging right neck mass. Initial fine-needle aspiration (FNA) revealed multinucleated giant cells consistent with granulomatous inflammation, prompting a presumptive diagnosis of tuberculous lymphadenitis and ini…

Mycobacterium abscessus (Mab) is recognized as the most pathogenic mycobacterium affecting humans, comprising three phylogenetic subspecies: M. abscessus subsp. abscessus, M. abscessus subsp. bolletii, and M. abscessus subsp. massiliense. Its clinical manifestations are varied and frequently subject to misdiagnosis. Mab exhibits both intrinsic and acquired resistance to numerous antibiotics, which results in limited therapeutic options and poor clinical outcomes. This report details a case of cervical lymphadenitis caused by Mab, initially misdiagnosed as tuberculosis. During anti-tuberculosis…

Histiocytic necrotizing lymphadenitis (HNL) is a rare condition presenting with lymphadenopathy and fever. We report a case of a 61-year-old male with a history of perianal abscess surgery who developed HNL postoperatively. The patient was treated with corticosteroids, leading to resolution of fever and alleviation of symptoms. This case emphasizes the need for clinical vigilance for HNL in patients with a history of perianal abscess surgery and postoperative fever with lymph node enlargement.

In patients with non-tuberculous mycobacterial cervicofacial lymphadenitis, incomplete surgical removal of infected lymph nodes leads to delayed healing and a higher recurrence rate, with eventual spontaneous drainage through the skin. However, complete surgical removal is not always achievable due to the extent of the infected tissue and proximity to vulnerable structures, such as the facial or accessory nerve. The aim of this study was to identify the clinical determinants of the (in)ability to perform complete surgical removal. The electronic health records of patients aged 0-15 years with …

BACKGROUND: There are only very few reports of cervical toxoplasma lymphadenitis being diagnosed exclusively via fine-needle aspiration cytology (with serology).
CASE REPORT: We describe a case of toxoplasma lymphadenitis that was successfully diagnosed by fine-needle aspiration cytology. The case involved a male patient who was immunocompromised as a result of recurrent acute myelogenous leukaemia with cervical lymphadenopathy. The biopsy showed typical features of a well-defined pseudocyst containing Toxoplasma gondii tachyzoites.
CONCLUSION: Toxoplasma lymphadenitis is a common cause of l…

Compromised T-cell immunity persists for up to 1 year after autologous stem cell transplantation (ASCT), and patients treated with ASCT are more likely to develop atypical lymphoid hyperplasia that mimics tumor recurrence. Here, we present a case of cervical lymphadenitis due to cytomegalovirus (CMV) reactivation in a patient who had undergone ASCT for Burkitt lymphoma, which mimicked tumor recurrence on computed tomography and positron emission tomography-computed tomography 6 months after ASCT. This lesion was confined to the regional lymph nodes and was not accompanied by signs of systemic …

BACKGROUND: Studies on intrathoracic tuberculous lymphadenitis in adults are confined to the preliminary CT findings with ordinary CT and ordinary spiral CT. There has been no deepgoing study of multidetector CT to date. Multidetector CT could contribute to better imaging of intrathoracic tuberculous lymphadenitis in adults. The purpose of this study was to explore the multidetector CT features of intrathoracic tuberculous lymphadenitis in adults, and the correlation with clinical symptoms and pathologic changes.
METHODS: Multidetector CT findings from 42 consecutive adult patients with intra…
