BACKGROUND: Previous studies on allergy to feathers have not addressed whether organisms living on feathers (mites, lice, moulds) are a source of allergens.

Chigger mites of the genus Leptotrombidium (Acari: Trombiculidae) transmit scrub typhus, caused by Rickettsia tsutsugamushi (= R.orientalis) in South-East Asia. In China, eighty-two species of Leptotrombidium have been recorded; these are listed with the names of Provinces where they were found. Five species, L.deliense, L.insularae, L.kaohuense, L.rubellum and L.scutellare, have been implicated as Chinese vectors of scrub typhus. A brief key is given to the larvae of all but three of the Leptotrombidium mites known in China.

Skin test, radioallergosorbent test (RAST) and nasal provocation test were carried out on 392 patients to detect house dust (HD) and mites as causative allergens. A survey of nasal mites, primarily from birds in Texas, was reported and comparisons with the other major studies were made. Of 103 host species examined, 40 were parasitized, and of 502 individual birds examined, 87 were parasitized (17% prevalence).
