Kaposiform hemangioendothelioma (KHE) is a rare vascular neoplasm of low malignant potential that mainly affects infants and adolescents. The tumor almost exclusively occurs in somatic soft tissue or the retroperitoneum. We report herein two cases of primary KHE occurring in a long bone without cutaneous changes with long-term follow up in young patients. The patients were a 9-year-old girl and 5-year-old boy presenting with lytic lesions of the femur and humerus, respectively, without cutaneous lesions. Histologically, the neoplasms were comprised of nodules of spindle- to oval-shaped cells g

BACKGROUND/AIM: In the autosomal dominant hereditary disease neurofibromatosis type 1 (NF1), lesions of the jaw develop in isolated cases, which are diagnosed as central giant cell granuloma (CGCG). This study aimed to clarify the genetic basis of a bone lesion in a syndromic patient.
CASE REPORT: The NF1 patient had developed a CGCG that recurred after local excision. Blood and tumor tissue were studied for NF1 mutations using advanced molecular genetic methods. Examinations of blood and tumor tissue provided evidence of the constitutive mutation in both samples. A further mutation was detec

Abstract Background The value of adding coronal STIR images to MR imaging of sciatica aiming to detect extra-spinal abnormalities. Results Additional coronal STIR images detected extra-spinal abnormalities in 20% of the patients, thereby downgraded the normal studies from 21 to 13%. The extra-spinal abnormalities included bone abnormalities (36.4%), soft tissue abnormalities (4.5%), neurological abnormalities (2.3%), gynecological abnormalities (50%), and miscellaneous (6.8%). In 6.9% of patients, the extra-spinal abnormalities explained the patients’ pain and influenced their management. Extr

Thoracic extramedullary hematopoiesis (EMH) is a rare manifestation in patients with myeloproliferative neoplasm. A 76-year-old woman with a long-standing history of polycythemia vera presented with a 2-month history of worsening dyspnea and left-sided wheezing. A chest computed tomography showed an ill-defined soft tissue mass encasing the left mainstem bronchus causing airway obstruction, associated with paratracheal and paraesophageal lymphadenopathy. Endobronchial ultrasound-guided fine needle aspiration of the soft tissue mass and mediastinoscopy with excisional biopsy of a paratracheal l

A lymphoma developed in a large neurofibroma in a young woman who had no other stigmata of neurofibromatosis. The neurofibroma was congenital and extensively involved the soft tissue and bone of the face and neck. Despite multiple attempts to excise the neurofibroma, it persistently recurred. At the age of 30 the patient underwent another resection of the lesion, and a follicular, mixed, small and large cell lymphoma was present within the neurofibroma. Over 3 years the lymphoma transformed into a diffuse large cell type despite the fact that it remained localized to the neurofibroma. After th

Spontaneous tumors were found in the vascular and lymphatic systems upon systemic histologic examination of the cardiovascular, hematopoietic, and lymphatic tissues of Syrian hamsters from the Eppley (EC) and Hannover colonies (HC). The incidence of endothelial tumors (hemangioendotheliomas) was similar in both colonies and sexes. The hemangioendotheliomas generally originated in the liver and spleen. Malignant lymphomas developed in high incidences in both colonies; however, their morphology varied. Those in EC hamsters were of histiocytic and, to a lesser extent, plasmacytic types; in the HC

Extramedullary haematopoiesis (EMH) refers to haematopoietic proliferation outside the bone marrow, most often arising as a compensatory response to ineffective marrow function in chronic anaemias and myeloid neoplasms, particularly myelofibrosis and other myeloproliferative neoplasms. While the liver and spleen are typical sites, renal involvement remains particularly uncommon and may mimic infiltrative malignancy or infection on cross-sectional imaging. We report a 35-year-old woman with biopsy-proven grade 2 myelofibrosis who presented with constitutional symptoms, namely asthenia, progress

With their close anatomical relationship, the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), mandibular ramus, skull base, ear, and infratemporal fossa make up a complex structure that may collectively be referred to as the 'TMJ and adjacent structures complex' (TASC). This study presents the neoplasms that may be encountered in the TASC region and their classification, which may be useful for the surgical treatment. Data of 1022 consecutive patients treated with resection of TASC neoplasms from May 2000 to October 2022 were reviewed. Pathology outcomes were classified according to the World Health Organizati

INTRODUCTION: Chondrosarcomas are primary malignant bone tumor that rarely occurs in the head and neck region. Squash cytology of skull base neoplasm shows atypical chondrocytes and myxoid stroma, which suggests many possibilities like chordoma, chordoid glioma, chordoid meningioma and chondrosarcoma. Isocitrate dehydrogenase gene (IDH) mutations have been reported in 50% to 60% of the head and neck region chondrosarcoma.

In recent times BRAF V600E mutations have emerged as a genetic hallmark of hairy cell leukemia (HCL). This specific point mutation is present in virtually all cases of HCL but is exceedingly rare in other peripheral B-cell neoplasms. In this study we investigated the application of a BRAF V600E mutation-specific antibody (clone VE1) to differentiate HCL from HCL mimics, such as HCL variant and splenic marginal zone lymphoma. A total of 52 routinely processed formalin-fixed paraffin-embedded tissue specimens were investigated (bone marrow, n=46; spleen, n=6) for expression of V600E-mutated BRAF

Lung cancer is the most frequent malignant tumour in men. Advanced disease may produce metastatic tumours in subcutaneous tissue and also infiltrate the chest wall. We present a history of a man referred to our department suspected of lung tumour infiltrating the chest wall. Additionally, bone metastatic disease was diagnosed (ribs, vertebral bodies and skull). Thanks to a wide diagnostic approach, ductal cancer of the breast was finally diagnosed, a neoplasm that is extremely rare in male patients, usually presenting as a definite nodule in the nipple area of the breast. This case shows the i

BACKGROUND: Extramedullary plasmacytoma (EMP) is a rare plasma cell neoplasm of soft tissue without bone marrow involvement or other systemic characteristics of multiple myeloma
CASE PRESENTATION: A 42 year-old woman presented with intermittent dry cough of 10 months duration. Her breathing sound was slightly coarse without rales or rhonchi on auscultation. CT scan revealed a right anterior mediastinal shadow with multiple pulmonary nodular lesions. A video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS) was performed. Histopathology showed it to be a myeloma.
CONCLUSION: This is the first presentatio

In the presence of obvious, diffuse tissue proliferation in the retrobulbar space coupled with pain, increased erythrocyte sedimentation rate and a good response to corticosteroid administration, it is safe to assume, in consultation with an ophthalmologist and without doing a biopsy, that the lesion is a pseudotumour. For all other proliferative processes in the orbit and around the medial and inferior rectus muscles histological verification is indicated. The surgical approach is dictated by the site of the tumour in relation to the optic bulb and nerve. Computer tomography does not provide

Clinical specimens of blood, bone marrow, lymph node, extranodal tissue, and body fluid were collected from 67 cases of hematologic neoplasms (including chronic lymphoid leukemias, T- and B-cell lymphomas, and acute lymphoblastic and myelogenous leukemias) for comparison between the right-angle light scatter (RALS)/CD45 and the forward-angle light scatter (FALS)/RALS gating combinations. One to three diagnostic markers were selected from each case, yielding 124 paired results for comparison. We found that the percentage of tumor cell isolation and the total cell count in the tumor cell gate we

Tophaceous gout of the patella and extensor apparatus of the knee can mimic a musculoskeletal neoplasm. Considering gout, correlation with clinical history and presentation, and meticulous analysis of imaging semiology are key to a correct diagnosis. The most useful signs are periarticular erosion with overhanging edges, increased soft tissue on radiography and computed tomography, the "snowstorm sign" on ultrasound, variable signal and enhancement, bandlike infiltration of tendons, and osseous erosions with no or little bone marrow edema on magnetic resonance imaging. Dual-energy computed tom

Central ossifying fibroma (COF) is a benign osteogenic neoplasm, with fibrous tissue and calcifications similar to bone, which has the clinical presentation of an asymptomatic bulging. It is more common in the mandibular premolar and molar region, in the third and fourth decades of life, and in women more frequently than men. Surgical removal is the treatment of choice and additional reconstruction is essential due to the functional and esthetic problems faced by the patient. This article describes the surgical treatment and subsequent reconstruction in a 22-year-old man with COF and an expans

The epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is an uncommon vascular neoplasm. Numerous sites of involvement are possible, but these tumors most commonly arise in the soft tissues, liver, and lung. We report a case of epithelioid hemangioendothelioma presenting as a single lesion on the nasal portion of the maxilla. Histologically, the tumor within bone and skin exhibited cords and nests of plump, epithelioid-appearing cells exhibiting rudimentary vascular differentiation within a myxohyaline stroma. Immunohistochemical reactivities for factor VIII-related antigen, CD31, CD34, and vimentin were demons

Epithelioid hemangioendothelioma is a rare vascular neoplasm which exhibits the potential for malignancy and recurrence as well as the ability to metastasize. Although numerous sites of involvement are possible, these tumors most commonly arise in soft tissues, lung, liver, bone, and lymph nodes. In this report, we describe a case of oral epithelioid hemangioendothelioma in a child. This tumor appeared as exophytic ulcerated painless masses in the maxillary and mandibular gingiva. Histologically, the tumor was composed of a proliferation of tumor cells arranged in nests, cords, and short stran

A 11-year-old, Haflinger breed mare developed a slowly growing mass, protruding on the ventral aspect of the mandible. On palpation, the lesion was pedunculated, very firm, cold and not painful. Radiographic examinations showed a radiopaque, multi-lobular, "mushroom-like" lesion, which arose from the mandibular cortex without involving the bone marrow cavity. Thereafter, the mass was excised for cosmetic purposes. Microscopically, the lesion mainly consisted of bone trabeculae, covered by a thick layer of connective tissue resembling the periosteum. History and clinical findings allowed the te
