Malformations of the posterior fossa: current perspectives.

Posterior fossa malformations are a special group of central nervous system anomalies that present during infancy with hypotonia, developmental delay, microcephaly, or hydrocephalus. Recent discoveries of the genetic and epigenetic factors that control hindbrain ontogenesis explain some of these disturbances in cerebellar development. A comprehensive classification of posterior fossa malformations is proposed with particular attention to Dandy-Walker malformation, Joubert syndrome, and other cerebellar hypoplasias. A rare form of cerebellar hypertrophy which caused repeated obstruction at the

Congenital malformations in infants of diabetic mothers.

In a series of 701 infants born to diabetic women between 1950 and 1974 ,57(8-1 percent) had congential malformations which is a rate three to four timeshigher than in the normal populations of Birmingham.. In 26 cases(3-8 per cent) the malformations were fatal and accounted for 26 per cent of the perinatal mortality in the series. Central nervous system, cardiovascular and skeletal abnormalities were equally common and there was a high incidence of anencephalus, spina bifida, transposition of the great vessels and sacral dysgenesis...

Ocular malformations in human fetuses with external malformations.

Sixty undamaged human fetuses with various nonocular external malformations were selected randomly from a large number of fetuses collected by the Department of Anatomy Faculty of Medicine, Kyoto University, and examined macroscopically and stereomicroscopically for ocular and other external and internal malformations. Eighteen fetuses (30 percent) showed ocular malformations of the following types: approximated eyes (two cases), approximated eyes plus microncornea (one case), microphthalmia (eight cases), microcornea (three cases), corneal opacity (one case), transparent sclera (two cases), a

Intracranial Vascular Malformations in Children.

Intracranial vascular malformations (IVMs) represent a significant challenge in pediatric medicine due to their diagnostic and therapeutic complexity. Despite their rarity, the severity of potential neurologic outcomes necessitates a comprehensive understanding and approach to management. This article aims to provide an overview of pediatric IVMs, specifically nidal arteriovenous malformations, cavernous malformations, capillary telangiectasias, and developmental venous anomalies, and highlight the importance of advanced diagnostic imaging and therapeutic strategies in improving outcomes. Vein

Novel Development of a Large Cerebral Cavernous Malformation in an Adolescent With a History of Familial Cerebral Cavernous Malformation Syndrome.

Cerebral cavernous malformations (CCM) are capillary vascular malformations of the central nervous system (CNS). These lesions can be either familial or sporadic. We present a case of a 16-year-old girl with familial CCM syndrome who presented with a six-month history of chronic headaches. A magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scan revealed a large cavernoma in the right frontal lobe that had not been present on a prior scan performed eight years earlier. This case presentation demonstrates the possibility of significant novel cavernoma development further into adolescence.

Posterior fossa neoplasm and PHACES syndrome: a case report.

A 4-year-old girl with PHACES syndrome (posterior fossa brain malformations, hemangiomas, arterial anomalies, cardiac anomalies/coarctation of the aorta, eye abnormalities, and sternal clefting/supraumbilical raphe) developed a cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma 18 months after resolution of her neck, ear, and thoracic hemangiomas. Because cutaneous hemangiomas may have involuted by the time a patient is diagnosed with a central nervous system neoplasm, it seems possible that in other such patients the association may have gone unrecognized. Cerebellar pilocytic astrocytoma may be a rare manifes

Cavernous Malformation Associated With Arterialized Developmental Venous Anomaly: A Case Report.

BACKGROUND AND IMPORTANCE: Formation of cavernous malformations (CMs) has been recognized to be associated with developmental venous anomaly (DVA) by many authors. Hemodynamic stress due to venous outflow restriction could be hypothesized as a cause. On the other hand, a rare subgroup of DVA with an arterial component has been reported as likely to hemorrhage or be symptomatic. Cases of arterialized DVAs reported previously have not been associated with the presence of CM. CLINICAL PRESENTATION: We present herein a case report of arterialized DVA in the brainstem with repeated cerebellar hemo

An unusual dumbbell form of cavernous hemangioma of the cervical spine.

Cavernous hemangiomas are vascular malformations of the central nervous system that may rarely affect the epidural space of the spine. We report a case of an epidural cavernous hemangioma which was originating from the left C8 nerve root and extending anteriorly to the apex of the left lung.

[Sonography of the central nervous system in prematures and newborns].

UNLABELLED: Examination of the central nervous system in premature and full-term infants requires a sensible selection of the available diagnostic procedures such as ultrasound, MRI and CT to allow sufficient and accurate diagnosis and management. ULTRASOUND: Ultrasound, including the various Doppler techniques, is a very reliable, safe, noninvasive diagnostic tool that allows evaluation of even severely ill patients in intensive care units. It is especially well suited for the study of intracranial hemorrhage, hypoxic-ischemic encephalopathy, congenital malformations of the brain and lesions

Increased Hospitalizations for Neuropathies as Indicators of Zika Virus Infection, according to Health Information System Data, Brazil.

Evidence is increasing that Zika virus can cause extensive damage to the central nervous system, affecting both fetuses and adults. We sought to identify traces of possible clinical manifestations of nervous system diseases among the registers of hospital admissions recorded in the Brazilian Unified Health System. Time series of several diagnoses from the International Classification of Diseases, 10th Revision, were analyzed by using control diagrams, during January 2008-February 2016. Beginning in mid-2014, we observed an unprecedented and significant rise in the hospitalization rate for cong

[De novo appearance of a partial trisomy 1q in mosaic due to a 1;9 translocation].

A child with trisomy 1q24----qter is described. This syndrome is compared to other 1q partial trisomies. An association is proposed between these trisomic segments and the following phenotypic signs: microphtalmia, trigonocephaly, hypertrichosis, antimongoloid eye slants, anomalies of the biliary tract, and malformations of the central nervous system.

Type I interferon in neurological disease-the devil from within.

The members of the type I interferon (IFN-I) family of cytokines are pleiotropic factors that have seminal roles in host defence, acting as antimicrobial and antitumor mediators as well as potent immunomodulatory factors that bridge the innate and adaptive immune responses. Despite these beneficial actions there is mounting evidence that link inappropriate or chronic production of IFN-I in the CNS to the development of a number of severe neuroinflammatory disorders. The most persuasive example is the genetically determined inflammatory encephalopathy, Aicardi-Goutières syndrome (AGS) in which

Pathogenic Variants in MPDZ are Associated with a Syndromic Neurodevelopmental Disorder: A Case Report and Review of the Literature.

Pathogenic variants in MPDZ are typically associated with congenital hydrocephalus. We report on siblings who present with more complex central nervous system malformations and defects in cardiovascular, ocular, and respiratory systems. Phenotyping of the proband revealed aortic coarctation, bicuspid aortic valve, partial anomalous pulmonary venous return, ventricular septal defect, Dandy-Walker malformation, along with subependymal gray matter heterotopia, megalocornea, and chorioretinal punctate lesions. Prenatal phenotyping of the proband's now deceased brother noted left-sided diaphragmati…

Second trimester fetal MRI of the brain: Through the ground glass.

Fetal MRI is an important tool for the prenatal diagnosis of brain malformations and is often requested after second-trimester ultrasonography reveals a possible abnormality. Despite the immature state of the fetal brain at this early stage, early suggestive signs of the presence of brain malformations can be recognized. To differentiate between the normal dynamics of the growing brain and the developing pathological conditions can be challenging and requires extensive knowledge of normal central nervous system developmental stages and their neuroradiological counterparts at those different st

Encephalocraniocutaneous Lipomatosis Without Ocular Malformations.

BACKGROUND: Encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis is a rare congenital neurocutaneous syndrome resulting from ectomesodermal dysgenesis and characterized by unique hairless scalp lesions in the form of nevus psiloliparus, ipsilateral ocular malformations, and central nervous system anomalies. According to the 2009 diagnostic criteria proposed by Moog et al., ocular abnormalities are supposed to be the most consistent feature of encephalocraniocutaneous lipomatosis. PATIENT DESCRIPTION: We describe an 18-year-old girl with most of the central nervous system manifestations of encephalocraniocuta

[Analysis of congenital malformations in newborns].

We analyzed data from 194 newborns with congenital malformations of central nervous, cardiovascular, gastro-intestinal, skeletal, genito-urinary systems and Down's syndrome. We detected that the highest frequency of congenital malformations occurred from may 1986 to december 1986. Congenital malformations were detected more frequently in female newborns and newborns delivered by multipara. The percentage of CNS malformations was constant but at the same time the number of other malformations were significantly changed. We made an attempt of statistical analysis of frequency and type of malform

Ethanol inhibits C6 cell growth: fetal alcohol syndrome model.

Maternal consumption of ethanol produces a pattern of malformations, including nervous system abnormalities, in the developing fetus, a state called Fetal Alcohol Syndrome. We report the dose-dependent inhibition by ethanol of the growth of a glioma derived cell line, C6 cells; the effects occur at ethanol concentrations commonly encountered in the blood during human intoxication. The effects occur with different morphological subtypes of the cell line and do not occur when the cells are exposed to iso-osmolar concentrations of other chemicals. The results demonstrate that C6 cells are a model

Down syndrome and the autonomic nervous system, an educational review for the anesthesiologist.

Approximately one in every 700 babies in the United States is born with Down syndrome, or 0.14%. Children with Down syndrome have cognitive impairment and congenital malformations necessitating frequent occurrences of general anesthesia and surgery. The thoughtful perioperative care of children with Down syndrome is relevant and acutely complex for the pediatric anesthesiologist. Behavior, sedation, hypotonia, upper airway obstruction, venous access, and bradycardia are omnipresent concerns apart from the surgical pathology. Down syndrome is also associated with autonomic nervous system dysfun

The profile of major congenital abnormalities in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population.

The aim of this study was to establish the profile of major congenital malformations in the United Arab Emirates (UAE) population which has a high rate of consanguinity. All births with birth weight above 500 g in the three hospitals in the Al Ain Medical District of UAE were prospectively studied from January 1992 to January 1994. About 98% of the births in the district occur in these three hospitals. Detailed family history and clinical and relevant laboratory investigations were recorded in each case. Necropsy was not permitted. The major malformations were classified as multiple or isolate

Exploring genetic causal relationship between antidepressants use and congenital malformations.

Existing studies have demonstrated that the use of antidepressants is associated with congenital malformations; however, the conclusions are … espiratory system malformations (OR = 1.21, 95 % CI = 1.02-1.44, P = 0.033), and fluoxetine use and nervous system malformations (P = 0.026). This study did not find evidence of an association between the use of citalopram, paroxetine, or sertraline and any congenital malformations. Our study provides evidence of a causal association between exposure to antidepressants and ce …
