Prevention of high-risk behaviors in adolescent women.

PURPOSE: To better delineate the impact of health risk behaviors on adolescent women's current and future health and development. METHOD: The Commonwealth Fund Survey of Adolescent Health, a national survey of adolescents in Grades 5-12 designed to better understand their health and health care needs, was used as the basis for this study. Racism and Oral Health Outcomes among Pregnant Canadian Aboriginal Women.

This study assessed links between racism and oral health outcomes among pregnant Canadian Aboriginal women. Baseline data were analyzed for 541 First Nations (94.6%) and Métis (5.4%) women in an early childhood caries preventive trial conducted in urban and on-reserve communities in Ontario and Manitoba. One-third of participants experienced racism in the past year determined by the Measure of Indigenous Racism Experience. In logistic regressions, outcomes significantly associated with incidents of racism included: wearing dentures, off-reserve dental care, asked to pay for dental services, pe

Impact of a decline in Colorado Medicaid managed care enrollment on access and quality of preventive primary care services.

BACKGROUND: Beginning in 1997 the Colorado Medicaid program de-emphasized managed care and shifted children from enrollment in a health maintenance organization (HMO), which required an enrollee to have an assigned primary care physician, to either the unassigned fee-for-service (UFFS) program in which the enrollee was not required to have a primary care physician (PCP) or to the primary care physician program (PCPP) in which the enrollee was required to select a participating PCP if one was available. The proportion of Medicaid enrollee-months in HMOs dropped from 75.4% in 1997 to 29% in 2003

Family planning services for adolescents and young adults.

If we are to influence the numerical trends of venereal disease and of unwanted pregnancies in the young, family planning services should be made easily available to them. To encourage the widest possible and most effective use of such services requires that health professionals openly endorse their ready availability. They must foster non-judgmental attitudes, however unorthodox patient life styles may be, and provide the young with opportunities to explore their own sexual behavior. The Youth Clinics of the Department of Community Health Services in Los Angeles are designed to meet both the

Reproductive and sexual health benefits in private health insurance plans in Washington State.

CONTEXT: Although unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) are considerable problems in the United States, private health insurance plans are inconsistent in their coverage of reproductive and sexual health services needed to address these problems. METHODS: A survey administered to a market-representative sample of 12 health insurance carriers in Washington State assessed benefit coverage for gynecologic services, maternity services, contraceptive services, pregnancy termination, infertility services, reproductive cancer screening, STD services, HIV and AIDS services, an

[Dental sociology as the background and validation framework of childhood oral health promotion programs].

Childhood oral health represents a significant global public health concern shaped by biological, behavioral, and social determinants. Dental diseases, particularly dental caries, gingivitis, and periodontal conditions, remain among the most prevalent chronic diseases worldwide and are strongly associated with lifestyle factors, health literacy, socioeconomic status, and access to preventive services. This theoretical review aims to introduce the conceptual framework of dental sociology and highlight the importance of integrating social and behavioral perspectives into childhood oral health pr

Data on toxicology, prison release and contact with health and social services in Oslo were collected. RESULTS: Majority of cases were men

Does the health system model shape prevention? Evidence from 22 OECD countries (2004-2023).

INTRODUCTION: Against a background of population ageing, rising healthcare costs, and growing public-health challenges, this study analysed trends in the share of total health expenditure allocated to preventive care from 2004 to 2023 in 22 European countries, examining whether specific health systems are associated with different relative budgetary prioritisation of preventive care. Although there are few studies investigating this issue adopting the standard tripartite classification, to our knowledge, this is the first study to explore the topic using the latest classification of healthcare

[Prevention of risk factors for chronic noncommunicable diseases, effective practices, policies and approaches in the primary health care system].

The relevance of this study stems from the fact that the prevention of behavioral risk factors in primary health care (PHC) is an effective measure that can reduce not only morbidity but also the burden on healthcare systems. However, the implementation of effective practices, policies, and approaches remains uneven, necessitating an examination of the best strategies, barriers, and opportunities to optimize preventive care at the PHC level. A search in the PubMed, Scopus, and WHO IRIS databases for the period 2019-2025 identified 48 relevant open-access sources. Using PRISMA guidelines, the q

Bridging the Digital Prevention Gap: A Systematic Literature Review of Digital Health Literacy and Preventive Health Behaviors in Low-Income Communities.

Digital health literacy is increasingly central to preventive healthcare, particularly in low-income and socioeconomically vulnerable communities where limited internet access, lower health literacy, and digital exclusion may restrict engagement with prevention services. Although digital health tools are expanding, evidence remains fragmented on how digital health literacy is associated with preventive behaviors in disadvantaged populations. This systematic literature review examined the association between digital health literacy and preventive health behaviors, including COVID-19 prevention,

Changes in Physical Health After Supported Housing: Results from the Collaborative Initiative to End Chronic Homelessness.

BACKGROUND: The permanent supported housing model is known to improve housing outcomes, but there has been sparse research on the effects of supported housing on physical health. Various organizations including the National Academy of Sciences have called for research in this area. OBJECTIVE: This observational multi-site outcome study examined changes in physical health among chronically homeless adults participating in a comprehensive supported housing program and the associations between changes in physical health, housing status, and trust in primary care providers. DESIGN: Data are pres

Screening recommendations for the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Studies have documented the potential contributions of preventive health care programs. Yet little is known about which screening tests should be included in public health programs for older persons. This study offers recommendations regarding these tests. METHODS: The recommendations come from synthesizing the findings of the US Preventive Services Task Force, the literature, and the consensus of experts in geriatrics, gerontology, and health policy research. The literature was evaluated to identify methodologically sound studies of the prevalence of selected disorders and benefi

The utilization, characteristics, and influencing factors of non-therapeutic traditional Chinese medicine services among middle-aged and older population in Guangzhou, China: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: As an integral part of the "Healthy China" strategy, healthy aging emphasizes meeting the non-therapeutic health needs of middle-aged and older populations, which is highly consistent with Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) concepts. However, empirical studies focusing on the utilization patterns and determinants of such services among the middle-aged and older population remain limited. This study aims to assess the utilization and influencing factors of non-therapeutic TCM services among middle-aged and older people in Guangzhou. METHODS: A cross-sectional survey was conducted f
