OBJECTIVE: Speech disorders could affect the intelligibility, but also social competence and emotional development of a cleft-palate child. In this study, we proposed to examine the phono-articulatory defects of a group of surgically treated cleft palate patients, relatively to the familial social background, and children ability of self-controlling during spontaneous language.
METHODS: Sixty-eight children (22 males and 46 females) mean age 6.87 years, affected by a non-syndromic isolated cleft of the palate underwent to the same surgical protocol. Linguistic level was evaluated using the sp

PURPOSE: Moebius Syndrome is a rare congenital neurological condition often characterized by multiple cranial nerve involvement. This case study presents an eight-year old girl with Moebius Syndrome (MC) who received 30 sessions of speech therapy. This occurred after presenting to clinic 11 months after left facial reanimation with gracilis thigh muscle transfer surgery. On examination, only flickers of left facial movement were observed. There was no movement on the right side of the face. As a consequence of the minimal movement, MC presented with drooling and unintelligible speech. The purp

PURPOSE: The study examined speech gains in three bilectal Cypriot-Greek speaking children with speech sound disorders. The study is based on theoretical frameworks that are on par with word-level characteristics and is motivated by the sparsity of cross-language studies in speech sound disorder intervention.
METHOD: A multiple-baseline, single-participant design was implemented across three participants with speech sound disorders aged 3;2-4;0 years across baseline (pre-test), intervention, post-test, and follow-up phases. Intervention was administered twice a week for two months. Treatment

PURPOSE: The purpose of this investigation was to examine the effects of a modified version of a newly developed therapy for aphasia and acquired apraxia of speech (AOS), Combined Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech Treatment (CAAST).
METHOD: Four speakers with chronic AOS and aphasia received CAAST in the context of multiple baseline designs. Dependent variables included language measures (i.e. production of correct information units (CIUs)) and speech production measures (i.e. speech intelligibility and percent correct consonants (PCC) in sentence repetition).
RESULT: Three of the participants d

The aim of the present prospective study was to evaluate the functional sequelae and postoperative development of quality of life after intraoral tumour surgery in 40 consecutive patients with a squamous cell carcinoma of the floor of the mouth. Immediate reconstruction of intraoral soft tissues after tumour resection was accomplished by local flaps (cheek and tongue) (n=27) and by revascularized transfer of small bowel grafts (n=5) and myocutaneous/fasciocutaneous flaps (n=8). Mobility of the tongue was assessed by ultrasound. Quality of speech was analysed using the Freiburg speech intelligi

PURPOSE: This investigation was designed to examine the effects of a newly developed treatment for aphasia and acquired apraxia of speech (AOS). Combined Aphasia and Apraxia of Speech Treatment (CAAST) targets language and speech production simultaneously, with treatment techniques derived from Response Elaboration Training (Kearns, 1985) and Sound Production Treatment (Wambaugh, Kalinyak-Fliszar, West, & Doyle, 1998). The purpose of this study was to determine whether CAAST was associated with positive changes in verbal language and speech production with speakers with aphasia and AOS.

The appropriate tongue reconstruction method is critical for better functional outcomes. The aim of this study was to determine the optimal reconstructive method for restoring postoperative function based on the extent of resection. We retrospectively reviewed 43 patients with lateral oral tongue cancer who underwent glossectomy between January 2010 and October 2014. Tongue mobility, articulation, verbal diadochokinesis, speech intelligibility and swallowing outcomes were assessed 2-3 years postoperative and were analyzed according to resected tongue volume and the method of reconstruction. PURPOSE: The StartReact effect, whereby movements are elicited by loud, startling acoustic stimuli (SAS), allows the evaluation of movements when initiated through involuntary circuitry, before auditory feedback. When StartReact is applied during poststroke upper extremity movements, individuals exhibit increased muscle recruitment, reaction times, and reaching distances. StartReact releases unimpaired speech with similar increases in muscle recruitment and reaction time. However, as poststroke communication disorders have divergent neural circuitry from upper extremity tasks, it is unclear if

BACKGROUND: In individuals with an intellectual disability, speech dysfluencies are more common than in the general population. In clinical practice, these fluency disorders are generally diagnosed and treated as stuttering rather than cluttering.
PURPOSE: To characterise the type of dysfluencies in adults with intellectual disabilities and reported speech difficulties with an emphasis on manifestations of stuttering and cluttering, which distinction is to help optimise treatment aimed at improving fluency and intelligibility.
METHOD: The dysfluencies in the spontaneous speech of 28 adults (

The quality of synthetic speech is affected by two factors: intelligibility and naturalness. At present, synthesized speech may be highly intelligible, but often sounds unnatural. Speech intelligibility depends on the synthesizer's ability to reproduce the formants, the formant bandwidths, and formant transitions, whereas speech naturalness is thought to depend on the excitation waveform characteristics for voiced and unvoiced sounds. Voiced sounds may be generated by a quasiperiodic train of glottal pulses of specified shape exciting the vocal tract filter. It is generally assumed that the gl

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to assess speech outcomes and dental arch relationship of 5-year-old Czech patients with unilateral cleft lip and palate (UCLP) who have undergone neonatal cleft lip repair and one-stage palatal closure.
METHODS AND MATERIALS: Twenty-three patients with UCLP, born between 2009 and 2010, were included in the study. Three universal speech parameters (hypernasality, articulation and speech intelligibility) have been devised for speech recordings evaluation. Outcomes of dental arch relationship were evaluated by applying the GOSLON Yardstick and subsequentl

Patients with acquired defects or congenital malformations of the palate exhibit disturbances in speech, including hypernasality, nasal emission, and decreased intelligibility of speech. Maxillofacial prosthetic treatment can reestablish the palatopharyngeal integrity to provide the potential for acceptable speech. This article describes a case series of patients with palatopharyngeal disorders and their treatment approaches.

PURPOSE: Peer support offers important benefits for people with Parkinson's disease (PD), helping to reduce social withdrawal and promote participation in daily life. Successful peer support relies on mutual intelligibility: Individuals with PD must be able to both understand and be understood by their peers, even when hypokinetic dysarthria is present. Although the speech production aspects of dysarthria in PD have been well studied, little is known about how people with PD perceive dysarthric speech. Perceptual training has been shown to improve neurotypical (NT) listeners' understanding of

Vocoder-based speech synthesis has become a promising technique to accommodate the demands of high-quality speech analysis, manipulation, and synthesis. However, most existing works focus on how to synthesize normal human voice with high signal-to-noise ratio, neglecting individuals' pathological voice disorder in speech interaction. In this work, we propose a non-linear voice repair vocoder for pathological vowels and sentences, which takes the pathological speech as input and generates high-quality repaired speech. Our approach is specifically designed to enhance the speech quality and intel

BACKGROUND: Benefits of intensive speech treatment have been documented for a range of speech signs in English speakers with Parkinson's Disease (PD). However, the answer to a critical question that whether the same treatment benefits speech variables including intelligibility in Mandarin speakers is still unclear. In order to develop a targeted speech treatment for Mandarin speakers with PD, we reviewed the efficacy of intensive speech treatment to improve vocal loudness and functional communication and discuss possible explanations for efficacy on Mandarin speakers with PD.
