Metabolites of carbon disulfide excreted into the urine of viscose workers are detectable by application of a nonselective assay for the determination of thio compounds. Enhanced secretion of thio compounds occurred especially at the end of the workday in exposed workers. A classification of urine samples according to the degree of exposure gave evidence for a relation between exposure to carbon disulfide and excretion of thio compounds in urine. The presence of 2-thiothiazolidine-4-carboxylic acid in urine of viscose workers was indicated by TLC, UV-spectrometry, and HPLC.

From among 810 persons subjected to a medical examination, skin lesions were found in 33.3%. These were mostly: seborrhea (89 cases), occupational naevi (55 cases), dermatomycosis (49 cases), urticaria (21 cases), eczema (12 cases). Other dermatoses were found in 44 workers, however, in a small percentage, not greater than in other non-industrial populations. No occupational dermatoses resulting from exposure to fundamental materials or dyes used in production were found.

The existence of byssinosis among cotton workers in Belgium has, up to now, been a matter of doubt. This study reveals that the disease undoubtedly occurs, but its prevalence is much lower than in Lancashire cotton mills. I have made investigations in two textile mills, one in East Flanders and one in West Flanders. Ninety-eight workers were interviewed in the first mill and 101 in the second, comprising card-room workers, thrashers, and blenders. Ten (5%) of these workers were found to have Grade I byssinosis; four (2%) were diagnosed as Grade II; and two (1%) were in Grade III.

The rapid growth of the textile and garment industry generates large quantities of solid waste and heavy-metal-contaminated wastewater, creating coupled environmental challenges that require integrated solutions. In this study, post-industrial garment waste was valorized into a multifunctional carbon material via anaerobic pyrolysis and evaluated for dual applications as a solid fuel and as an adsorbent for simultaneous Pb(ii) and Cr(vi) removal from aqueous solutions. Carbonized garment waste biochars (CGW) were produced at 400-900 °C and characterized by SEM, EDX, XRD, FTIR and BET analyses.

Thirty patients (27 men and 3 women) with an average industrial asbestos exposure of 19 years have been examined. The results of all the efforts made so far towards the reduction of CS2 concentrations at the workplaces of viscose rayon industry indicate that achievement of safe standards is little probable in the nearest future. Likewise, the preventive activities aimed at the reduction of the daily working time from 8 to 6 hours and referring workers to work with no exposure for several months are hardly effective. Basing on the results of clinical and epidemiological studies of the CS2 exposed population and relevant control groups the authors indicate their own solutions of decreasing the health risk.
