Psychiatric nurse-delivered Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) for adults with moderate to severe post-traumatic stress symptoms in Jordan: a preliminary randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is associated with substantial psychological, social, and functional impairment. Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based trauma-focused intervention; however, evidence regarding its delivery by psychiatric nurses remains limited, particularly in Middle Eastern settings. This study evaluated the effectiveness of psychiatric nurse-delivered EMDR for reducing post-traumatic stress symptoms among Jordanian adults. METHODS: A two-arm randomized controlled trial with repeated measurements was conducted among 70 adul

A comparison of nasal trauma in preterm infants extubated to either heated humidified high-flow nasal cannulae or nasal continuous positive airway pressure.

UNLABELLED: The objectives of this study were (1) to devise a nasal trauma score for preterm infants receiving non-invasive respiratory support, (2) to compare the incidence of nasal trauma in preterm infants <32 weeks gestation randomised to either nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) or heated humidified high-Flow nasal cannulae (HHHFNC), in the first 7 days post-extubation and (3) to assess the effect of two different nasal dressings in those assigned to NCPAP. We randomly assigned preterm ventilated infants to receive Vapotherm® HHHFNC or NCPAP post-extubation. Infants receivi

Managing complications associated with the use of indwelling urinary catheters.

The insertion of an indwelling urethral urinary catheter is an invasive procedure that is commonly undertaken in healthcare settings. However, there are several risks and potential complications associated with these devices, so their use should be avoided where possible. It is important that nurses are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills not only to assess if a patient requires a catheter, but also to minimise the risk of associated complications and to understand how these can be managed. This article discusses some of the common complications that can occur with the use of indw

Vicarious traumatization: concept analysis.

There is growing knowledge of the effects of stress on professionals, including various negative symptoms that may mirror the biopsychosocial effects exhibited by the victims of trauma. Multiple concepts including burn out, compassion fatigue, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and secondary traumatic stress, are terms that have been incorrectly interchanged with the term vicarious traumatization (VT). Clarity of vicarious victimization and understanding contributing factors is imperative in order to facilitate future research and implement timely and effective interventions, as well as sc

Small-Scale High-Fidelity Simulation for Mass Casualty Incident Readiness.

AUDIENCE: This content can be used for trauma centers, emergency medicine residency programs, and emergency nursing. INTRODUCTION: Mass casualty incidents (MCI) are becoming increasingly common and are occurring in locations that have not experienced them previously which adds to the challenge of readiness for emergency departments (EDs). Sporadic occurrences and limited resources add to the complexity of preparing for such an event. In advance of a large gathering in our metropolitan area, we developed and conducted a simulation to better prepare not only our residents, but our MCI planning

It Doesn't Have to Hurt: Palliative Care for Trauma Patients.

Trauma is a leading cause of mortality and long-term morbidity in the United States, yet palliative care remains inconsistently integrated into trauma care despite strong evidence of benefit. Palliative care advanced practice registered nurses (APRNs), traditionally experienced in chronic, life-limiting illness, are uniquely positioned to address the complex and evolving needs of trauma patients despite the acute, unpredictable nature of injury. This paper argues for the routine integration of palliative care into trauma care, examines the barriers to implementation, and highlights how palliat

How does postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) affect pediatric patients?

Postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome (POTS) is a disorder characterized by a sudden onset of orthostatic intolerance upon standing, which may be relieved when lying down. The most common complications associated with POTS are trauma or injury from falling or fainting. Pediatric patients with POTS may have comorbidities that interfere with their quality of life. Careful management of the disorder is essential to prevent injury. POTS management is often misunderstood, which may lead to misdiagnosis and invalidation by health care professionals. This article discusses how POTS affects pediat

Transient global amnesia.

Transient global amnesia is a benign, self-limiting disorder primarily involving a disturbance of memory. It occurs in late middle and older aged adults. Patients with this syndrome do not have a history of head trauma, drug or alcohol intoxication, hypoglycemia or psychologic dysfunction. Once the episode has cleared, there are no residual deficits except amnesia for the events which occurred during the episode. This article includes a case presentation in addition to discussion of the clinical features, etiology, treatment and nursing interventions for the patient with a transient global amn

The challenge of ritualistic child abuse.

Survivors of ritual abuse have endured physical and psychosexual trauma typically compounded by mind-altering drugs. Some abused children have never known a trustworthy adult to protect them from harm. Children often cope with the anxiety and terror of abuse through psychological defenses such as denial, self-hypnosis, and dissociation, but more extreme responses such as self-mutilation or multiple personalities may occur. Reports of ritual abuse of children are so shocking and bizarre that professionals initially respond with confusion and disbelief (Cozolino, 1989). Nurses need to assess clu

Surviving multi-trauma in the past.

BACKGROUND: Surviving multi-trauma is strongly associated with emergent resuscitation and treatment in modern medical facilities. Multi-trauma survival before the advent of modern medicine is likely to have been extremely uncommon, particularly in primitive societies. The aim of this study was to investigate the case of an ancient Australian Aboriginal who appeared to have survived multi-trauma. METHODS: We investigated the skeletal remains of an adult Australian Aboriginal with healed fractures of the right femur and humerus. The time of death was assessed by carbon dating. Blunt chest trauma in the elderly.

Forty-eight patients over 60 years of age who had sustained blunt chest trauma were evaluated by injury, treatment, survival, and return to preinjury function. The patients ranged in age from 60-92 years (mean 72). The cause of injury was a fall in 25 (52.1%) and motor vehicle accident in 20 (41.7%). Twenty-three (47.9%) patients had major extrathoracic injuries. The average Injury Severity Score was 18 (range 5-41). Seven (14.6%) patients were treated with ventilation; six of these patients had flail chests, and four (57.1%) intubated patients developed pulmonary complications. Nonventilatory

Nursing Method of Patients with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury and Fracture in the Ambulance.

Источник пометил публикацию как отозванную

Craniocerebral injury accounts for 9%-21% of the injuries in all parts of the body, and the incidence rate ranks first in all types of trauma or only lower than limb fractures. This study mainly discusses the nursing methods of patients with severe traumatic brain injury and fractures in ambulances. This study is based on risk factors with moderate-to-higher association strength from retrospective studies. According to the regression coefficients of the logistic regression model, the risk factors were assigned, and the early warning score table of craniocerebral injury complicated with hyponat

A Systematic Literature Review of the Childbearing Cycle as Experienced by Survivors of Sexual Abuse.

For women who have experienced sexual abuse, the physical changes associated with pregnancy and the lack of control during birth can be catalysts for trauma from past abuse to resurface. This systematic review offers women's health care providers a thorough evaluation of the state of the science on survivors' childbearing experiences. The literature shows that lack of control, dissociation, and flashbacks are common themes. Re-experiencing of the trauma occurred during various stages of childbirth and was traumatizing to women. Nurses and other clinicians providing care to childbearing women c

Part 1: early recognition and treatment of birth trauma: injuries to the head and face.

The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations (JCAHO) Sentinel Event Alert from July 21, 2004 states that there have been 47 cases of birth trauma-related perinatal death or permanent disability reported for JCAHO review since 1996. This report clearly illustrates the importance of birth trauma in clinical practice for neonatal and perinatal nurses. Estimates suggest that birth trauma occurs in 2% to 7% of all deliveries and is associated with an increase in both mortality and morbidity. Birth trauma to the head may result in minor superficial extracranial injuries, such as

Clinical Nurses as Second Victims After Patient Safety Incidents: A Meta-Synthesis of Experiences, Coping and Support Needs.

BACKGROUND: In patient safety incidents (PSIs), nurses often act as 'second victims', experiencing multifaceted distress, including psychological, physiological and professional burdens. In recent years, qualitative studies on nurses as second victims have increased; however, the evidence remains fragmented. Existing qualitative meta-syntheses have limitations in terms of contextual diversity, coverage of incident types and exploration of support needs. AIM: To synthesise qualitative evidence on nurses as second victims after PSIs and provide implications for developing a multilevel support s

Reconceptualizing Acute Pain Management in the 21st Century.

Acute pain can have many etiologies that include surgical procedures, trauma (motor vehicle accident), musculoskeletal injuries (rib fracture) and, burns among others. Valuable components of a multimodal approach to acute pain management include both opioid and non-opioid medications, procedure specific regional anesthesia techniques (peripheral nerve blocks and neuraxial approaches), and interventional approaches (eg, peripheral nerve stimulation and cryo-neurolysis). Overall, successful acute perioperative pain management requires a multimodal, multidisciplinary approach that involves a coor
