Evidence documenting the global burden of disease from viral hepatitis was essential for the World Health Assembly to endorse the first Global Health Sector Strategy (GHSS) on viral hepatitis in May 2016. The GHSS on viral hepatitis proposes to eliminate viral hepatitis as a public health threat by 2030. The GHSS on viral hepatitis is in line with targets for HIV infection and tuberculosis as part of the Sustainable Development Goals. As coordination between hepatitis and HIV programs aims to optimize the use of resources, guidance is also needed to align the strategic information components o

BACKGROUND: Vedolizumab (ENTYVIO) is a humanized α4β7 integrin antagonist approved for the treatment of inflammatory bowel disease, which selectively blocks gut-specific lymphocyte trafficking. We evaluated the risk of opportunistic infections of interest in patients treated with vedolizumab.
METHODS: We determined the frequency of opportunistic infections and tuberculosis in patients receiving vedolizumab in phase 3 clinical trials and post-marketing settings. We also evaluated adverse events reported in the post-marketing setting in patients with a history of or concurrent hepatitis B/C vir

51 cases of granulomatous hepatitis were seen among 1234 liver biopsies over a 10 year period. Tuberculosis was the commonest cause seen in 55 percent of cases. Other causes included leprosy, sarcoidosis, histoplasmosis, brucellosis, amoebic liver abscess, lymphoma and malignant granuloma. 12 percent of cases remained undiagnosed. Clinically these patients presented with pyrexia and hepatosplenomegaly. Jaundice was uncommon. Many showed elevated alkaline phosphatase levels, anaemia and raised ESR Granulomatous hepatitis of unknown aetiology with FUO was seen in 6 percent cases only.

A 4-y-old, female mixed-breed dog was presented to the Ontario Veterinary College for further evaluation of multiple pulmonary and hepatic masses, intrathoracic lymphadenitis, and recent development of a pyogranulomatous pleural effusion. Along with other comprehensive tests, a thoracic lymph node biopsy was performed, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis complex infection was confirmed by real-time PCR. The dog's condition declined post-operatively, and euthanasia was elected. Postmortem examination confirmed severe granulomatous pneumonia, hepatitis, intrathoracic and intraabdominal lymphadenitis,

Intestinal tuberculosis is rare compared to other forms of the disease. A review of the last 10 years in a General University hospital identified 21 cases diagnosed at autopsy and 8 during life. Most patients were males, older than 30 years of age, alcoholics and originating in southern Chile. Evidence of concomitant pulmonary tuberculosis was frequent. Disease was located most commonly at the ileum and cecum, and surgery was needed in a high proportion of cases. Hepatic cirrhosis and lymphopenia were common findings in autopsy patients.

A plasmapheresis (PA) model was developed to be used in chronic rabbit experiments. Test results obtained in 96 generalized tuberculosis animals demonstrated a more benign tuberculosis process in animals subjected to plasmapheresis, which was confirmed by parameters of the coefficients of mass and indices of animals' organ affecting, findings of the cation-lysosomal test and peptide molecules content in the peripheral blood. Rabbit studies involving registration of bromsulphalein half-life, hepatic blood flow and relative parenchymatous clearing showed that the isoniazide and rifampicin action

OBJECTIVE: To compare health outcomes and costs of different strategies for treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in pregnancy.
METHODS: Using a Markov decision-analysis model, the following three strategies were evaluated for treatment of latent tuberculosis infection in pregnancy, defined as positive tuberculin skin reaction of 10 mm or greater and negative chest radiograph: no treatment, antepartum isoniazid administration, in which women were given 300 mg of isoniazid with pyridoxine beginning at 20 weeks' gestation for 6 months; and postpartum isoniazid, in which women were given is

PURPOSES: Ten to fifteen percent of granulomatous hepatitis are idiopathic. If symptoms like prolonged fever are present, empirical treatment is discussed. The goal of this study is to describe the empirical treatment proposed in this situation by French specialists of internal medicine.
METHODS: We conducted a practice investigation among the French national society of internal medicine (SNFMI), using an anonymous questionnaire that related a case of idiopathic granulomatous hepatitis. This questionnaire was proposed to all French internists present at the SNFMI congress in June and December

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: The seroprevalence of viral hepatitis and spectrum of infectious complications among human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected injection drug users (IDUs) remains unclear in Taiwan, although there has been a significant increase in the prevalence of HIV infection among IDUs in the last 2 to 3 years.
METHODS: The medical records of HIV-infected IDUs who sought medical care at a referral hospital for HIV care from June 1994 to December 2006 were retrospectively reviewed. A standardized case record form was used to collect demographic, clinical, laboratory and microbiol

BACKGROUND: Treatment of latent tuberculosis infection with isoniazid (INH) or rifampin (RIF) is controversial in liver transplant candidates due to potential hepatotoxicity. In this study, treatment of latent tuberculosis during transplant candidacy period is explored, and relevant literature is reviewed.
METHODS: Liver transplant candidates with latent tuberculosis infection by positive tuberculin skin test (>5 mm) were prospectively enrolled and treated with 9 months of INH or 4 months of RIF, and were monitored monthly for their liver enzyme profiles, adverse effects, compliance, and comp

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis most often affects the pulmonary system; however, 8-15% of cases infect the genitourinary system. The primary treatment of uterine tuberculosis is medical therapy, and only when that fails is surgical intervention warranted.
CASE: A 75-year-old woman presented with chronic back pain and fatigue. She had been on prednisone for 9 years for autoimmune hepatitis and had earlier exposure to tuberculosis. Evaluation led to the diagnosis of uterine tuberculosis. The patient was unable to tolerate a full course of antituberculin therapy, so she underwent an abdominal hysterec

BACKGROUND: Opportunistic infections are relatively rare in early human immunodeficiency virus infection, especially infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Here, we report a patient who presented with acute human immunodeficiency virus and multidrug-resistant M. tuberculosis co-infections.
CASE PRESENTATION: A 27-year-old homosexual male was admitted for fever, cough, and hepatitis. At the time of admission, the p24 antigen was detected in his serum, indicating that he had an acute human immunodeficiency virus infection. He was also diagnosed with disseminated tuberculosis spreading to th

During 1988-89 this continuing survey showed 18 infections in the staff of laboratories reporting from 166 centres, representing 21,756 person-years of exposure. Shigella and other bowel infections (one caused by S typhi) predominated, affecting 11 microbiology medical laboratory scientific officers. Three shigella infections originated from quality control samples. Pulmonary tuberculosis affected four workers, including two mortuary technicians, but without detected occupational exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Other infections included one caused by Brucella melitensis. Hepatitis was

HISTORY AND CLINICAL FINDINGS: A 57-year-old woman was admitted for investigation of intrahepatic calcifications. Intrahepatic cholangiolithiasis was suspected. In 1993 she underwent cholecystectomy because of lithiasis. The examination with endoscopic retrograde cholangiography (ERC) was planned.
INVESTIGATIONS: The laboratory findings were normal except for a mild elevation of alkaline phosphatase and gammaglutamyl transpeptidase. The sonographic examination of the abdomen showed multiple hyperechoic calcifications along non-dilated bile ducts. In the spleen of normal size there were found

Tuberculosis in childhood is clinically challenging, but it is a preventable and treatable disease. Risk factors depend on age and immunity status. The most common form of pediatric tuberculosis is pulmonary disease, which comprises more than half of the cases. Other forms make up the extrapulmonary tuberculosis that involves infection of the lymph nodes, central nervous system, gastrointestinal system, hepatobiliary tree, and renal and musculoskeletal systems. Knowledge of the imaging characteristics of pediatric tuberculosis provides clues to diagnosis. This article aims to review the imagin
