Preventing tablet defects through vacuum-assisted deaeration of a powder bed.

Lamination is a common defect observed during pharmaceutical tablet compression and can be attributed to air entrapment (lamination type 1) within the powder bed. In this study, a novel vacuum-inducing chamber was implemented to remove air from the powder bed prior to compaction, thereby enabling, for the first time, a systematic investigation of lamination type 1 while decoupling air entrapment from other contributing factors. Microcrystalline cellulose (MCC) was compacted on a Huxley Bertram compaction simulator equipped with a vacuum chamber under systematically varied compressive stresses,…

Semiflex-assisted vacuum therapy for perianal fistulas: the Semiflex pilot study.

INTRODUCTION: Perianal fistulas often require multiple surgical interventions because of their chronic nature. Various sphincter-sparing techniques achieve clinical closure rates of up to 70%, yet recurrence remains a major challenge. Vacuum-assisted closure (VAC) therapy has shown promise in wound healing, but its application in perianal fistulas remains largely unexplored. The Semiflex catheter was developed to facilitate outpatient vacuum therapy without the need for general anesthesia during catheter exchanges. This pilot study aimed to evaluate the feasibility and clinical applicability o…

Prophylactic endoluminal vacuum therapy after major gastrointestinal surgery: a systematic review.

In the last decade, endoluminal vacuum therapy (eVAC) has emerged as an effective treatment for anastomotic leak (AL); however, little is known regarding its prophylactic use. In this systematic review we evaluated overall outcomes in patients undergoing major gastrointestinal surgery and treated with prophylactic eVAC. A systematic review of English articles on four electronic databases was performed according to the PRISMA statement up until January 2022. References of selected articles were manually screened to identify relevant missing papers. Primary endpoints were AL and mortality rates …

Finding suitable candidates for vacuum bell therapy in pectus excavatum patients.

Vacuum bell therapy has been acceptable substitute for pectus excavatum patients who want to improve their appearance but avoid surgical correction. The aim of this study was to assess the pre-treatment characteristics of patients with pectus excavatum and to establish characteristics that can potentially help identify ideal candidates for vacuum bell therapy. Expected improvements in thoracic indices were evaluated using pre-treatment chest computed tomography, which was performed before and after applying a vacuum bell device. Treatment results after 1-year of application were evaluated usin…

Endoscopic vacuum assisted closure of esophagogastric anastomosis dehiscence: A case report.

BACKGROUND: Esophagogastric leakage is one of the most severe postoperative complications. Partial disruption of the anastomosis, can be successfully treated with an endoscopic vacuum assisted closure (E-VAC). The advantage of that method of treatment is the ability to adjust a vacuum dressing individually to the size of the dehiscence and thus to reduce the risk of a secondary fistula or abscess. The authors present two patients with postoperative gastroesophageal leakage treated successfully with E-VAC. CASE SUMMARY: Two male patients developed a potentially life threatening esophagogastric…

Development of children with symptomatic intracranial hemorrhage born after vacuum extraction.

Vacuum extraction significantly reduces perinatal morbidity/mortality. Increased occurrence of intracranial hemorrhage has been associated with vacuum extraction and is multifactorial; a causative effect is not assumed. Long-term developmental outcome data in this specific subpopulation are lacking and may differ from non-vacuum extraction-associated intracranial hemorrhage. Long-term follow-up of children with symptomatic vacuum extraction-associated intracranial hemorrhage was retrospectively analyzed using Bayley Scales of Infant Development. Twenty-five newborns were identified with sympto…

Vacuum-assisted biopsy diagnosis of atypical ductal hyperplasia and patient management.

PURPOSE: This study sought to evaluate the accuracy of vacuum-assisted biopsy (VAB) in the diagnosis of atypical ductal hyperplasia (ADH) by determining the rate of VAB underestimation compared with definitive histology. In addition, an attempt was made to identify parameters that could help determine the most appropriate patient management. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed 1,776 VAB procedures performed between November 1999 and January 2008 for suspicious subclinical breast lesions visible only at mammography. A total of 177 patients with a VAB diagnosis of pure ADH were s…
