[Vesselplasty for the treatment of spinal metastases complicated by posterior wall destruction of vertebral body].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the early clinical efficacy and safety of vesselplasty for the treatment of spinal metastases complicated by posterior wall destruction of vertebral body. METHODS: The clinical data of 19 patients(21 segments) with spinal metastases complicated by posterior wall destruction of vertebral body treated from January 2016 to January 2017 were retrospectively analyzed. There were 15 males and 4 females, aged 40 to 85 years old with a mean of (66.00±10.25) years . All patients had severe low back pain before the operation, which were diagnosed by CT as damage-type metastatic t…

On the origin of vertebrate body plan: Insights from the endoderm using the hourglass model.

The vertebrate body plan is thought to be derived during the early Cambrian from a worm-like chordate ancestor. While all three germ layers were clearly involved in this innovation, the role of the endoderm remains elusive. According to the hourglass model, the optimal window for investigating the evolution of vertebrate endoderm-derived structures during cephalochordate development is from the Spemann's organizer stage to the opening of the mouth (Stages 1-7, described herein). Regulatory gene expression, examined during these stages, illustrate that the cephalochordate endoderm is patterned

Automatic analysis of global spinal alignment from simple annotation of vertebral bodies.

Purpose: Measurement of global spinal alignment (GSA) is an important aspect of diagnosis and treatment evaluation for spinal deformity but is subject to a high level of inter-reader variability. Approach: Two methods for automatic GSA measurement are proposed to mitigate such variability and reduce the burden of manual measurements. Both approaches use vertebral labels in spine computed tomography (CT) as input: the first (EndSeg) segments vertebral endplates using input labels as seed points; and the second (SpNorm) computes a two-dimensional curvilinear fit to the input labels. Studies were

Extensive Degeneration of Vertebral Body Leading to Baastrup's Disease: A Radiographic Review of an Image.

Baastrup's disease, known colloquially as "kissing spine disease", is a degenerative process, most commonly occurring in the lumbar spine, in which adjacent spinous processes closely approximate or even touch (Filippiadis et al. in Insights Imaging. https://doi.org/10.1007/s13244-014-0376-7, 2015). We present the case of an 86-year-old woman presenting with left low back, hip, and anterolateral thigh pain. Magnetic resonance imaging noted an approximation of the L2/3 spinous processes, with degeneration of the vertebral processes. This article is based on previously conducted studies and does

Low Temperature and Polyploidy Result in Larger Cell and Body Size in an Ectothermic Vertebrate.

Previous studies reported that low temperatures result in increases in both cell size and body size in ectotherms that may explain patterns of geographic variation of their body size across latitudinal ranges. Also, polyploidy showed the same effect on body size in invertebrates. In vertebrates, despite their having larger cells, no clear effect of polyploidy on body size has been found. This article presents the relationship between temperature, cell size, growth rate, and body size in diploid and polyploid hybridogenetic frog Pelophylax esculentus reared as tadpoles at 19° and 24°C. The size

[Recovery form of the vertebral body in a transpedicular fixation at spine fractures associated with osteoporosis].

We analyzed the correction indexes of posttraumatic deformation in 27 patients aged 61-76 years (62,9±1,4 years), when using an osteoplasty and transpedicular of fixation in respect of fractures of bodies vertebras of the thoracic and lumbar localization, associated with osteoporosis. Indicators of posttraumatic deformation the wedging index (WI) and the segmental kyphosis (SK) decreased at all patients. At the same time the minimally invasive (transcutaneous) operation allowed to achieve recovery of the lost anatomy and does not concede to results of open intervention. In group of patients wi

Complete Separation of the Vertebral Body Associated with a Schmorl's Node Accompanying Severe Osteoporosis.

A Schmorl's node is defined as a simple endplate intravertebral herniation resulting from trauma or idiopathic causes. Although Schmorl's nodes have been considered clinically insignificant, they might indicate an active symptomatic process or cause serious complications. In this study, we report an interesting case of complete separation of a vertebral body caused by an untreated Schmorl's node accompanying severe osteoporosis. To our knowledge, this is the first clinical report in the published literature to evaluate the complete separation of a vertebral body associated with a Schmorl's nod…

Congenital kyphosis in thoracic spine secondary to absence of two thoracic vertebral bodies.

Congenital thoracic kyphosis at D6-D7 vertebral body level has been encountered in an 18-month-old boy without neurological deficit. The constellation of the spine malformation complex such as incomplete development of the vertebral bodies associated with defective ossification of the thoracic pedicles causing effectively the development of spinal cord injury at the kyphotic level of D6-D7 were present. Congenital kyphosis in thoracic spine secondary to absence of two thoracic vertebral bodies has been reported in a few studies. It is the absence and asymmetry of growth plates that may contrib…

Corpectomy of three cervical vertebral bodies for malignant tumours--a study of two cases.

The increased detection rate of spinal tumours is due to more precise methods used for imaging the spinal column and better survival of cancer patients. It is therefore associated with greater incidence of metastatic complications. Primary tumours of the spine, both malignant and benign, are very rare. Histopathological confirmation is a prerequisite of correct treatment. Two patients with pain in the neck area, progressive paresis, breathing disorders and dysphagia were admitted to our hospital. In the first patient, a 78-year-old woman, imaging examinations revealed a large exophytic tumour

Tissue properties of the human vertebral body sub-structures evaluated by means of microindentation.

PURPOSE: The better understanding of vertebral mechanical properties can help to improve the diagnosis of vertebral fractures. As the bone mechanical competence depends not only from bone mineral density (BMD) but also from bone quality, the goal of the present study was to investigate the anisotropic indentation moduli of the different sub-structures of the healthy human vertebral body and spondylophytes by means of microindentation. METHODS: Six human vertebral bodies and five osteophytes (spondylophytes) were collected and prepared for microindentation test. In particular, indentations wer…

Redistribution of blood within the body is important for thermoregulation in an ectothermic vertebrate (Crocodylus porosus).

Changes in blood flow are a principal mechanism of thermoregulation in vertebrates. Changes in heart rate will alter blood flow, although multiple demands for limited cardiac output may compromise effective thermoregulation. We tested the hypothesis that regional differences in blood flow during heating and cooling can occur independently from changes in heart rate. We measured heart rate and blood pressure concurrently with blood flow in the crocodile, Crocodylus porosus. We measured changes in blood flow by laser Doppler flowmetry, and by injecting coloured microspheres. All measurements wer

The relationship between vertebral body deformity and disc degeneration in lumbar spine of the senile.

This study provides an investigation of the relationship between vertebral deformities and disc degeneration in patients with senile osteoporosis using biomechanical and medical imaging methods. The finite element analysis showed that stress concentration in the central area of the vertebral body is much decreased with disc degeneration, indicating that load transmission has been altered. Radiography and MRI suggested that vertebral deformities are related to the height and degeneration of the disc just below this vertebral body. When a disc has decreased height or degeneration, the vertebral …

[Pineal body in vertebrates: a model for investigations of receptor and effector mechanisms of neuronal systems].

Cell and molecular biological investigations have greatly contributed to our understanding of receptor and effector mechanisms in sensory, neuronal, and endocrine cells. A fascinating aspect of this line of research is how such mechanisms have evolved and how they interact with each other. As shown in this contribution, the vertebrate pineal organ is an interesting model to study these problems, because it undergoes a conspicuous transformation during phylogeny, comprises two well-characterized receptor mechanisms (photoreception and adrenoreception), and acts upon its targets via neuronal and
