The results of a clinical study of 33 patients with transsexualism (TS) have shown that TS is a pathological state of the person whose essence lies in the polar discrepancy of the biological sex with the forming psychic sex. It can be described as a true inversion of sexual identification and orientation. The formation of TS has been found to have a regular pattern. Four types of TS development have been identified. It has been shown that TS predisposes toward a high risk of suicidal behavior. It is suggested that the development of TS may be evaluated as autochthonous.

Consideration of different variants of deviation of the eyeballs at the acute stage of cerebral stroke may be of great significance for the diagnosis. Attention is drawn to cases characterized by dynamic changes of eye deviation. They were explained by the development of new foci both in the contralateral hemisphere and in the stem of the same side. One of the causes of these changes may be mechanisms of decompensation occurring after a previously experienced stroke.

The authors used ultrasonic dopplerography (UD) and the reactive hyperemia test to diagnose the vertebral-subclavicular stealing syndrome (VSSS) with occlusion of the proximal segment of the subclavicular or innominate arteries. The sonographic and angiographic findings coincided in 92.3% of cases. It is concluded that UD is the method of choice in the evaluation of the efficiency of reconstructive surgery aimed at correcting the VSSS.

Seventy-four patients with alcoholic delirium were studied for the parameters of the T- and B-system of immunity and natural resistance. The patients versus normal donors presented a statistically significant decrease in the number and proliferative activity of T-lymphocytes, an increase in IgA, as well as a reduction in levels of lysozyme, complement and bactericidal activity of the serum. The presence of immunological shifts after the completion of detoxifying therapy suggests that treatment should be continued even after the disappearance of psychic disturbances.

Thirty-four children, aged 1 to 3.5 years, with a reactive depressive state were examined. Using the ontogenetic approach, the authors analyze affective as well as somatovegetative, psychomotor and behavioural disorders in the structure of the abnormal state. The article describes the clinical picture of diagnostically difficult cases (22 children aged from 6 to 14 years) of depression, masked by marked vegetative disturbances, headaches, dizziness and paroxysmal states simulating a neurological diseases, unconfirmed by objective data. Nosological appurtenance of depression is verified by the presence of negative and productive symptoms of schizophrenia. Clinical picture is determined by both manifestations of depression and the presence of a residual organic background.

This is a report of a staged comparative study of 120 patients with neurotic (n = 60) and psychotic (n = 60) depressions secondary to a traumatic brain disease. Variants of depressive disturbances were identified. Neurotic disorders included neurasthenic, hysterical, and hypochondriac; psychotic ones--paranoid, hysterical, and adynamic. Criteria for the differential diagnosis of these conditions are outlined.

The mental state was studied in patients with different forms of migraine. Using experimental psychological, electroencephalographic, rheoencephalographic, echoencephalographic and dermatoglyphic methods patients with simple and associated migraine were examined. Characteristic mental disturbances were identified. The authors emphasize the significance of psychodiagnosis for selection of the correct management of patients and the selection of adequate therapy.

The results of clinical, experimental psychological and biochemical studies of patients with a subclinical form of Lesch-Nyhan syndrome suggested a reduction of the inhibitory influence of the caudate nucleus due to incomplete genetic defect of Hg-PRTase and related disorders of other types of metabolism in the area of basal ganglia as one of the links of pathogenesis. The pathogenetic therapy is based on maintaining high activity of Hg-PRTase by dietary treatment with limited intake of exogenous purines.

A total of 100 patients with sequelae of head traumas (concussion, contusion) were examined for the status of nonspecific cerebral systems. Forty healthy subjects comprised a control group. Combined examination of vegetative, electropolygraphic and neuropsychological systems made it possible to identify a syndrome of psychovegetosomatic disregulation in patients with a history of neurotrauma. It is suggested that the above syndrome is the key mechanism of head trauma consequences and that its development is related to dysfunction of nonspecific cerebral systems.

The authors analyzed the results of the rheoencephalographic examination of the cerebral hemodynamics under graded exercise (GE) in 42 normal subjects and 60 patients with cerebral atherosclerosis. A 5-year follow-up of a representative group of patients showed that the use of secondary prophylaxis of mental disorders in atherosclerosis (combat with excessive body weight, smoking, adynamia, excessive physical and mental exertion, etc.) led to a decrease in risk factors, improvement in the psychic status, reduction of psychopathological symptomatology, prevention of atherosclerosis complications, as well as to a considerable improvement in the patients' working ability.

In an experiment on Wistar male rats the authors studied the effects of teturam, diethyldithiocarbamate and Esperale in combination with L-DOPA on the consumption of alcohol and metabolism of biogenic amines in the brain. The use of L-DOPA prolonged the inhibitary effect of teturam on alcohol consumption. The administration of L-DOPA following Esperale implantation prevented the development of the abstinence syndrome. An increase in the efficacy of teturam and Esperale under the effect of L-DOPA was attended by elevated synthesis of cerebral noradrenaline.
