Three-year stability of open-bite correction by 1-piece maxillary osteotomy.

INTRODUCTION: The purpose of this retrospective cephalometric study was to evaluate the long-term vertical stability of anterior open-bite correction by 1-piece Le Fort I osteotomy and rigid fixation. METHODS: The sample comprised 40 consecutively treated patients from the files of the Department of Orthodontics, University of Oslo, Norway. All subjects had received a 1-piece Le Fort I osteotomy as the only surgical procedure from 1990 through 1998 and were followed for 3 years according to a protocol for data collection. Lateral cephalograms were obtained before surgery and at 5 occasions af

Longitudinal alteration of the occlusal plane and development of different dentoskeletal frames during growth.

INTRODUCTION: Valuable information about growth and development in different types of occlusions and skeletal frames can be obtained by analyzing longitudinal data, particularly the functional significance of the occlusal plane; this information is important for understanding the etiology, diagnosis, and treatment of malocclusion. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between the cant of the occlusal plane and mandibular position to establish a functional determinant in the development of different dentoskeletal frames in longitudinal growth samples. METHODS: Several m

Three-dimensional dental model analysis of treatment outcomes for protrusive maxillary dentition: comparison of headgear, miniscrew, and miniplate skeletal anchorage.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this retrospective study on dental models was to compare the orthodontic outcomes of maxillary dentoalveolar protrusion treated with headgear, miniscrews, or miniplates for maximum anchorage. METHODS: The 40 subjects were diagnosed as having either Angle Class II malocclusion or Class I bimaxillary dentoalveolar protrusion. All patients were treated to retract the maxillary dentoalveolar process by using the extraction space of the bilateral maxillary first premolars. They were divided into 3 groups according to the type of anchorage used. Group 1 (n = 16) received tr

Prediction of soft-tissue changes after mandibular advancement surgery with an equation developed with multivariable regression.

INTRODUCTION: This was a retrospective cephalometric study in patients undergoing mandibular advancement surgery. Our aim was to provide a more precise estimation of the postsurgical soft-tissue outcomes than can be achieved by using simple ratios of the hard and soft tissues. METHODS: The lateral cephalograms of 64 patients undergoing mandibular advancement, from before and near the end of treatment, were scanned and digitized with a customized software program. Multivariable regression analyses were used to create prediction equations for soft-tissue changes at pogonion, inferior labial sul

Biomechanical evaluation of chincup treatment with various force vectors.

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this study was to evaluate the biomechanical effects of chincup treatment by using a 3-dimensional finite element model. METHODS: Three-dimensional models of the mandible and the temporomandibular joint were modeled and analyzed. The final mesh consisted of 1572 solid elements with 5432 nodes. The chincup with 500 g of force was applied in a direction from the chin toward the mandibular condyle, the coronoid process, and a point anterior to the coronoid process. Then, the mechanical responses in terms of displacement and von Mises stresses are evaluated. RESULTS: The

Comparison between conventional and cone-beam computed tomography-generated cephalograms.

INTRODUCTION: Cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) is becoming established as an alternative and, in many aspects, superior radiographic technique to conventional radiography in orthodontics. However, cephalometric analysis is still an important tool in relation to treatment planning because 3-dimensional analyses are still not established. The aim of this study was to compare cephalometric measurements performed on conventional cephalograms with those on CBCT-synthesized images. METHODS: Three observers digitized landmarks used for the Björk analysis on conventional lateral cephalograms and

Risk factors for the occurrence and prevention of temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders: lessons from 2 recent studies.

INTRODUCTION: Our objectives were to demonstrate how standard epidemiologic measurements can assist in evaluating the risk factors for tempormandibular joint and muscle disorders (TMJMD) and to determine whether prevention is feasible. METHODS: We reviewed 2 recent studies that examined third-molar extractions and severe mandibular retrognathia as risk factors for TMJMD. Cumulative incidences were available from these studies. By using these values, standard epidemiologic measurements of risk, including population attributable risk (PAR), attributable risk (AR), population attributable risk p

Sequential bone healing of immediately loaded mini-implants.

INTRODUCTION: The relatively small size and the ability to load mini-implants without delay are important changes in the simplification of bone rigid anchorage. The purpose of this study was to analyze interfacial healing 1, 4, and 12 weeks after the placment of titanium mini-implants in New Zealand rabbits by removal torque test (RTT) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS: Eighteen animals were used in the experiment, in which 72 titanium grade 5 mini-implants 2.0 mm in diameter and 6.0 mm long, were placed. Each animal received 4 mini-implants; 2 were immediately loaded with 1 N.

Three-dimensional mechanical environment of orthodontic tooth movement and root resorption.

INTRODUCTION: The tension-compression theory of bone mechanotransduction is ubiquitous in orthodontics. However, partly due to deficiencies in the characterization of the mechanical environment, there is no consensus on the mechanisms that link stimuli to root resorption and bone response. In this study, we analyzed the predominant directions of tension and compression in the alveolar structures. METHODS: An idealized tooth model was constructed with computer-aided design for finite element stress analysis. The principal stress magnitudes and directions were calculated in tipping and translat

Influence of orthodontic intrusion on pulpal vitality of previously traumatized maxillary permanent incisors.

INTRODUCTION: Dental trauma seems to increase a patient's susceptibility to complications during orthodontic treatment. However, no previous investigation has examined the influence of orthodontic intrusion on pulpal vitality of traumatized maxillary permanent incisors. METHODS: Pulpal condition was examined clinically and radiologically after orthodontic intrusion of previously traumatized (OT group) and nontraumatized teeth (O group), and after previous dental trauma without orthodontic treatment (T group). Inclusion criteria for the OT and O groups were Class II Division 1 malocclusion wit

Inheritance of susceptibility to root resorption associated with orthodontic force in mice.

INTRODUCTION: External apical root resorption (EARR) is an unwanted sequelae of orthodontic treatment. Genetic factors account for approximately 64% of the EARR variation in humans. Inbred mice offer a model to control the environmental factors and genetic heterogeneity that complicate human genetic studies. Genetically distinct inbred mice and their offspring (F1s) were analyzed to examine the mode of inheritance and the influence of parental sex on the susceptibility to root resorption associated with orthodontic force (RRAOF). METHODS: RRAOF was determined histologically for male and femal

Effect of the transpalatal arch during extraction treatment.

INTRODUCTION: The transpalatal arch (TPA) can be used as an adjunct during orthodontic treatment to help control the movement of the maxillary first molars in 3 dimensions, including producing molar rotation and uprighting, maintaining transverse dimensions posteriorly during treatment, and maintaining leeway spaces during the transition of the dentition. The purpose of this retrospective cephalometric study was to test an additional function of the TPA: its ability to enhance orthodontic anchorage during extraction treatment. METHODS: Records consisting of pretreatment and posttreatment ceph
