Screening of organ and tissue donors for West Nile virus by nucleic acid amplification--a three year experience in Alberta.

West Nile Virus (WNV)-specific nucleic acid amplification testing (NAAT) of organ and tissue donors remains controversial. We report three years of WNV donor screening in Alberta Canada using NAAT. Between 2003 and 2005, 1549 initial specimens were received. A valid negative result was issued within the specified turnaround time on 1531 (98.8%). The initial NAAT was successful for 1393 samples (90%), while repeat testing using an alternate NAAT resolved a further 126 samples. For 12 of 14 donors, a second specimen provided a valid negative result. Failure to generate a valid negative result in…

Ocular melanoma in Alberta: a 38 year review pointing to the importance of tumor size and tumor histology as predictors of survival.

A large number of cases of ocular melanoma have been entered in The Provincial Cancer Registry of Alberta over the past 40 years. This study was undertaken in order to describe further the natural history of this disease and derive management recommendations for use at the provincial level. A retrospective chart review was carried out on all cases of ocular melanoma registered through The Alberta Provincial Cancer Registry between 1949 and 1987. Two hundred fifty-one cases were identified: 143 were males and 108 were females. The mean age of the patients at diagnosis was 60. The majority of th…

The COVID-19 Pandemic Did Not Negatively Impact Adherence to Cardiovascular Medications Among 548,601 Chronically Treated Patients in Alberta.

BACKGROUND: Studies have suggested that the COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted patient adherence with chronic medications. We explored whether adherence patterns changed in patients chronically treated with cardiovascular drugs after onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. METHODS: In this retrospective cohort study we examined drug dispensation data for all adult Albertans who were chronic users of at least 1 cardiovascular drug class between 2017 and 2023. We calculated each patient's proportion of days covered (PDC) for each drug class in the prepandemic phase (March 15, 2018 to March 14, 2020)…

Genetic Characterization of AmpC and Extended-Spectrum Beta-Lactamase Phenotypes in Escherichia coli and Salmonella From Alberta Broiler Chickens.

Horizontal gene transfer is an important mechanism which facilitates bacterial populations in overcoming antimicrobial treatment. In this study, a total of 120 Escherichia coli and 62 Salmonella enterica subsp. enterica isolates were isolated from broiler chicken farms in Alberta. Fourteen serovars were identified among Salmonella isolates. Thirty one percent of E. coli isolates (37/120) were multiclass drug resistant (resistant to ≥ 3 drug classes), while only about 16% of Salmonella isolates (10/62) were multiclass drug resistant. Among those, eight E. coli isolates had an AmpC-type phenotyp…

Increasing incidence of syphilis among patients engaged in HIV care in Alberta, Canada: a retrospective clinic-based cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Syphilis is a global health concern disproportionately affecting HIV-infected populations. In Alberta, Canada, the incidence of syphilis in the general population has recently doubled with 25% of these infections occurring in HIV-infected patients. The Southern Alberta HIV Clinic (SAC) and Calgary STI Program (CSTI) analyzed the epidemiologic characteristics of incident syphilis infections in our well-defined, HIV-infected population over 11 years. METHODS: Since 2006, as routine practice of both the Southern Alberta Clinic (SAC) and Calgary STI Programs (CSTI), syphilis screening…

Detoxification, endocrine, and immune responses of tree swallow nestlings naturally exposed to air contaminants from the Alberta oil sands.

Changes in environmental and wildlife health from contaminants in tailings water on the Canadian oil sands have been well-studied; however, effects of air contaminants on wildlife health have not. A field study was conducted to assess biological costs of natural exposure to oil sands-related air emissions on birds. Nest boxes for tree swallows (Tachycineta bicolor) were erected at two sites; within 5 km of active oil sands mining and extraction, and ≥ 60 km south, at one reference site. Passive air monitors were deployed at the nest boxes to measure nitrogen dioxide, sulfur dioxide, ozone, vol

Incidence of infectious complications following transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy in Calgary, Alberta, Canada: A retrospective population-based analysis.

INTRODUCTION: We have seen an increased risk of infectious complications following transrectal ultrasound-guided prostate biopsy (TRUS-PB). Fluoroquinolone (FQ) antibiotics are common for prophylaxis prior to TRUS-PB. We evaluate whether increasing FQ resistance correlates with increased incidence of post-biopsy infectious complications at our institution. METHODS: We conducted a retrospective chart and electronic health record review on 927 patients who underwent TRUS-PB between January and July of 2012 in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. We prospectively collected the following variables: age, pre…

The relationship between COVID-19 and opioid-related emergency department visits in Alberta, Canada: an interrupted time series analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Emergency departments (EDs) are important health care access points for people who use drugs (PWUD), but little is known about whether the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with changes in opioid-related emergency presentations. We investigated whether (1) the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic was associated with any change in average rates of opioid-related ED visits in Alberta; and (2) this varied across regions with different COVID-19 case rates. METHODS: We conducted maximum-likelihood interrupted time series analyses to compare opioid-related ED visits during the "…
