Case Report: Treatment of a Comorbid Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder With Psychostimulants.

Introduction: Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is a common disease in childhood and adolescence. In about 60% of pediatric patients, the symptoms persist into adulthood. Treatment guidelines for adult ADHD patients suggest multimodal therapy consisting of psychostimulants and psychotherapy. Many adult ADHD patients also suffer from psychiatric comorbidities, among others obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). The treatment of the comorbidity of ADHD and OCD remains challenging as the literature is sparse. Moreover, the impact of psychostimulants on obsessive-compulsive symptoms is

Obsessive-compulsive disorder and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: distinct associations with DNA methylation and genetic variation.

BACKGROUND: A growing body of research has demonstrated associations between specific neurodevelopmental disorders and variation in DNA methylation (DNAm), implicating this molecular mark as a possible contributor to the molecular etiology of these disorders and/or as a novel disease biomarker. Furthermore, genetic risk variants of neurodevelopmental disorders have been found to be enriched at loci associated with DNAm patterns, referred to as methylation quantitative trait loci (mQTLs). METHODS: We conducted two epigenome-wide association studies in individuals with attention-deficit/hyperac

The Psychosocial Outcome of Conduct and Oppositional Defiant Disorder in Children With Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the most common mental disorders diagnosed in children below the age of 12 years. It is characterized by hyperactivity, inattention, and impulsive behavior. ADHD affects the social, academic, and psychological aspects of children and adolescents. Children with ADHD struggle with school tasks and performance. They have lower grades than their peers and have difficulties interacting with their friends. Oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) is a mental disorder characterized by disruptive behavior, a pattern of angry and irritable mood, argu

Risk factors for incident major depressive disorder in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

The greater burden of illness in youth with co-occurring attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and major depressive disorder (MDD) deserves further investigation, specifically regarding the influence of other psychiatric or medical conditions and the pharmacotherapies prescribed. A retrospective cohort design was employed, using South Carolina's (USA) Medicaid claims' dataset covering outpatient and inpatient medical services, and medication prescriptions between January, 1996 and December, 2006 for patients ≤17 years of age. The cohort included 22,452 cases diagnosed with ADHD at a

Co-transmission of conduct problems with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: familial evidence for a distinct disorder.

Common disorders of childhood and adolescence are attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) and conduct disorder (CD). For one to two cases in three diagnosed with ADHD the disorders may be comorbid. However, whether comorbid conduct problems (CP) represents a separate disorder or a severe form of ADHD remains controversial. We investigated familial recurrence patterns of the pure or comorbid condition in families with at least two children and one definite case of DSM-IV ADHDct (combined-type) as part of the International Multicentre ADHD Genetics St

Atomoxetine treatment in children and adolescents with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and comorbid oppositional defiant disorder.

OBJECTIVE: To examine (1) moderating effects of oppositional defiant disorder (ODD) on attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) treatment response and (2) responses of ODD symptoms to atomoxetine. METHOD: Children and adolescents (ages 8-18) with ADHD were treated for approximately 8 weeks with placebo or atomoxetine (fixed dosing: 0.5, 1.2, or 1.8 mg/kg/day, b.i.d.) under randomized, double-blind conditions. Among patients with lifetime diagnostic information (n = 293), 39% were diagnosed with comorbid ODD and 61% were not. Treatment-group differences and differences between patients

Changes in Sleep Problems Across Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Treatment: Findings from the Multimodal Treatment of Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Study.

Objective: Stimulant medication and behavior therapy are efficacious for youth with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). However, research suggests that stimulants may start and/or worsen sleep problems for youth. Further, the impact of behavior therapy for ADHD on sleep is unknown. This study examined the frequency of sleep problems and effects of stimulant medication, behavior therapy, and their combination on sleep problems in youth with ADHD. This study also explored the influence of dimensional baseline ratings of ADHD symptom subtype and psychiatric comorbidity on sleep outco

Infant Habituation Task Performance Is Associated With Familial Risk for Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Habituation paradigms have been widely used with neurotypical infants, distinguishing short (vs long) looking as a signal of early individual differences in attention and learning efficiency. An objective task has yet to be identified linking potential early markers of risk for childhood attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) in infancy before formal identification of ADHD. METHOD: Infants 8 to 10 months of age from 2 cohort studies examining early signals of risk for ADHD completed 2 habituation tasks (with multimodal and unimodal stimuli). Latent growth mixture models we

Reproducible Temperament Profiles in Adolescents With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder Prospectively Predict Clinical Outcomes.

Currently, the field faces controversy about how to integrate novel, trait-based dimensions into existing psychological diagnostic frameworks. The problem is salient for attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), which encompasses a partially coherent neurodevelopmental syndrome that is nonetheless heterogeneous with respect to mechanism and outcomes. Here, we suggest that temperament profiles, related to trait-based variation in emotional response and regulation, provide a viable way to link the complexity of within-group trait variation to differences in clinical outcomes. Across two l

The Stigmatization of Caregivers of Children With Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder: A Systematic Review.

Research on Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD)-related stigma has centered on individuals with the diagnosis. Evidence concerning caregivers exists but has not been brought together in a way that clarifies its scope, correlates, and implications, despite caregivers' central role in navigating services, supporting daily functioning, and treatment engagement. The present study therefore to systematically review the empirical literature on the stigmatization of caregivers of children with ADHD. Following PRISMA guidelines, we searched PubMed and PsycINFO for studies between 2013 and

Rapunzel Syndrome in a Child With Sensory Feeding Difficulties and Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.

Rapunzel syndrome is a rare form of trichobezoar characterized by the extension of a gastric hair mass beyond the pylorus into the small intestine. It is most commonly reported in adolescents with underlying psychiatric illness. We describe a diagnostically challenging case in a younger child with neurodevelopmental vulnerability and sensory feeding difficulties. A 10-year-old girl with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder, sensory aversion to food textures, and heterozygous chromosomal deletions presented with progressive weight loss, anxiety around eating, and intermittent abdominal pain

Costs associated with adverse events during treatment episodes for adult attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) medication is frequently associated with adverse events (AEs), but limited real-world data exist regarding their costs from a payer's perspective. Therefore, this study evaluated the healthcare costs associated with common AEs among adult patients treated for ADHD in the US. METHODS: Eligible adults treated for ADHD were identified from a large US claims database (1 October 2015-30 September 2021). A retrospective cohort study design was used to assess excess healthcare costs and costs directly related to AE-specific claims per-patien

Conscientiousness assessments for people with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder: Measurement properties and potential issues.

Organizations increasingly recognize the importance of including neurodivergent people (e.g., those with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder [ADHD], autism, dyslexia) in the workforce. However, research suggests that some selection tools (e.g., measures of conscientiousness) show lower means for those with ADHD, which may carry implications for personnel selection. The three studies reported here address three questions: (1) What is the magnitude of ADHD-based differences in conscientiousness, and are these differences driven by facets with high or low job relevance? (2) Could reframing c

Default mode network connectivity and social dysfunction in children with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) negatively affects social functioning; however, its neurological underpinnings remain unclear. Altered Default Mode Network (DMN) connectivity may contribute to social dysfunction in ADHD. We investigated whether DMN's dynamic functional connectivity (dFC) alterations were associated with social dysfunction in individuals with ADHD. METHODS: Resting-state fMRI was used to examine DMN subsystems (dorsal medial prefrontal cortex (dMPFC), medial temporal lobe (MTL)) and the midline core in 40 male ADHD patients (7-10 years) and 45 health
