Serum beta-2 microglobulin and C-reactive protein levels were measured in 52 patients with acute adenovirus conjunctivitis and 58 healthy subjects, by ELISA technique. Serum beta-2 microglobulin levels were found to be significantly increased while there was no change in C-reactive protein levels. Serum beta-2 microglobulin levels closely paralleled the severity of the disease. The increased beta-2 microglobulin level in serum showed a significant fall to normal level on clinical improvement. There was no difference in the serum beta-2 microglobulin levels in virus-isolation positive and negat…

C-Reactive protein (CRP) has been measured in 90 consecutive CSF specimens using both latex agglutination and an immunoradiometric assay (IRMA). In the 60 CSF specimens otherwise normal by standard biochemical and microbiological criteria, the median CRP level was 32 micrograms/l (95% confidence limits, 0-108 micrograms/l) and in the remaining abnormal specimens the median level was 176 micrograms/l (95% confidence limits, 110-325 micrograms/l, p = 0.001). C-Reactive protein was detected by a commercial latex agglutination kit at a level of approximately 120 micrograms/l and all significant CN…

Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) is known to be produced by full-term infants and children in many diseases causing severe inflammation. We examined the usefulness of CRP as an early indicator of bacterial infection in premature newborn infants. CRP was obtained from 100 patients enrolled in a prospective study. All babies were suspected of having bacterial infection (meningitis-septicaemia) because of complications during pregnancy and/or symptoms suggestive of infection during the perinatal period. CRP was measured with the radial immunodiffusion technique. Examinations were done daily as long…

Serum C-reactive protein (CRP) was measured nephelometrically or turbidimetrically for rapid differential diagnosis of sixteen bacterial and fifteen viral infections of the central nervous system in patients aged from 2 weeks to 49 years. On hospital admission CRP levels were far above the upper limit of normal (19 mg/l) in all patients with bacterial meningitis, regardless of the duration of illness, the age of the patient, the bacterium involved, fever, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate, or the cerebrospinal-fluid cell count. In contrast, a slight rise in CRP level was seen in only one case…

Scarlet fever, especially in the mild and attenuated forms, proposes considerable diagnostic problems. The Authors, on the basis of their cases, remark the importance of C-reactive protein (CRP) positivity. After comparing the high initial positivity of this aspecific index of illness to the bacteriological pharyngeal findings and to the movement of antibodies against the Streptococcus, they think that CRP in scarlet fever may have a punctual significance, also for the ease and the quickness of this test.

Serum amyloid A (SAA) concentrations correlate well with C-reactive protein (CRP) concentrations. However, SAA is sometimes raised in disease when CRP is normal. This appears to occur more often in certain diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis, primary biliary cirrhosis and chronic active hepatitis. SAA concentrations did not distinguish between cancer with and without metastases as previously indicated, although mean concentrations were higher in more advanced tumours. Despite the higher sensitivity of SAA over CRP in the inflammatory response, SAA has little advantage over CRP in the assessm…

BACKGROUND: The association between C-reactive protein (CRP) and venous thromboembolism (VTE) is currently not well explained.
AIMS: To determine whether the association between CRP and VTE can be explained by concurrent presence of a procoagulant state, chronic diseases or obesity.
METHODS: Using data from the Multiple Environmental and Genetic Assessment of multiple risk factors for venous thrombosis (MEGA) case-control study, data on high sensitivity CRP (hsCRP), factor VIII activity (FVIII) concentration, chronic diseases (i.e. rheumatic disease, cancer, history of arterial cardiovascula…

BackgroundThe role of the C-reactive protein-albumin-lymphocyte (CALLY) index in predicting cardiovascular disease prognosis, particularly in the broader population, remains inadequately studied.MethodsData from 22,848 adults, collected between 1999 and 2010, were analyzed in this study. The association between the CALLY index and cardiovascular disease prevalence and mortality was examined using multivariate logistic regression and Cox proportional hazards models. Restricted cubic spline, Kaplan-Meier survival curves, time-dependent receiver operating characteristic curves, and subgroup and i…

C-reactive protein (CRP) is an inflammatory biomarker with prognostic value in heart failure, but its role in HeartMate 3 (HM3) left ventricular assist device recipients is unclear. We retrospectively analyzed 188 adult HM3 recipients (2016-2025), stratified by preoperative CRP into low-CRP (≤10 mg/L, n = 65) and high-CRP (>10 mg/L, n = 123) groups. High-CRP patients presented with a sicker phenotype, with higher INTERMACS profile 1/preoperative extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) support (50% vs. 3%) and greater renal, hepatic, hematologic, and nutritional derangement. In-hospital and …

Acute pancreatitis (AP) has a highly variable clinical course, making early identification of patients at risk of severe acute pancreatitis (SAP) essential for timely management. This study evaluated the ability of the C-reactive protein-to-albumin ratio (CRP/albumin ratio) at hospital admission to predict SAP and compared its performance with established prognostic scoring systems. This retrospective, single-center cohort study included 502 adults admitted with AP between January 2024 and December 2025. Disease severity was classified according to the revised Atlanta classification. The CRP/a…

Post-stroke cognitive impairment (PSCI) reflects vulnerability to cognitive decline beyond acute brain injury. Lipoprotein(a) (Lp(a)) is a genetically determined vascular risk factor with pro-inflammatory and pro-atherogenic properties, but the pathways linking Lp(a) to cognitive outcomes after stroke remain unclear. We examined whether systemic inflammation mediates or modifies Lp(a)-related cognitive risk after ischemic stroke. We analyzed data from a prespecified substudy of the Third China National Stroke Registry. Baseline serum Lp(a) and high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (hs-CRP) were …

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a common neurodegenerative disorder. The pathogenesis of PD is unknown till now. The high-sensitivity C-reactive protein (CRP) is a non-specific biochemical marker of inflammation. It is used for the screening of organ diseases and the monitoring of responses to treatment in cases of inflammation and infection. This study aimed to evaluate the relationship of high-sensitivity C-reactive protein in early Parkinson disease. A total of seventy-six early Parkinson's disease patients were enrolled in this Cross-sectional observational study which was carried out in the D…

We evaluated the joint relationship of post-operative C-reactive protein (poCRP) and a tumor immune-cell-score (IS) with overall survival (OS) and CRC-specific survival (CSS) in 680 colorectal cancer (CRC) patients recruited in Germany. CRP was assessed post-surgery while IS was derived from CD3 + /CD8+ cell densities in tumor tissue. Patients were categorized into four C-Reactive protein-Immune cell Score (CRIS) groups: CRIS-1 (CRP-low/IS-high), CRIS-2 (CRP-low/IS-low), CRIS-3 (CRP-high/IS-high), and CRIS-4 (CRP-high/IS-low). Associations of CRIS with survival were assessed using Cox regressi…

The C-reactive protein albumin lymphocyte (CALLY) index is a newly proposed indicator of immune, inflammatory, and nutritional status. However, there is no research on the relationship between CALLY index and peripheral artery disease (PAD). We utilized relevant data from NHANES 1999-2004 on lower limb diseases research. PAD was diagnosed as an ankle-brachial index < 0.9. CALLY index was calculated using the formula: albumin (g/L) × lymphocytes (109/L) ÷ [CRP (mg/L) × 10]. Multivariable logistic regression and restricted cubic splines (RCS) were used to explore the relationship between CALLY i…

BACKGROUND: Elevation of systemic inflammatory markers were found to correlate with increased disease extent, reduced lung function and higher risk of future severe exacerbations in patients with bronchiectasis. Although a significant correlation of circulating hs-CRP levels with HRCT scores and resting oxygen saturation in patients with stable-state non-cystic fibrosis (CF) bronchiectasis was suggested, there is little data on the relationship between hs-CRP and the prognosis of bronchiectasis and a lack of data on the role of hs-CRP in predicting bronchiectasis exacerbation.
