Prognostic value of red blood cell distribution width/protein and red blood cell distribution width/platelet count ratios in intensive care burn patients.

BACKGROUND: Red cell distribution width (RDW), serum protein levels, platelet count (PLT), and RDW/protein and RDW/PLT ratios have been associated with adverse outcomes in various medical conditions such as sepsis and critical illness. This study aimed to investigate the association between these parameters and in-hospital mortality following severe burn injury. METHODS: Intensive care burn patients admitted between March 2007 and December 2020 with a total body surface area (TBSA) burned ≥ 20 % were analyzed. Multivariate analysis was conducted to examine variables associated with mortality.

The nucleated red blood cell count at birth, the volume of red cell transfusions received, and the risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies described an association between the NRBC count at birth and risk of developing retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Other studies correlated red blood cell (RBC) transfusions with ROP. We are aware of no studies that examined both NRBC count and RBC transfusions, in the same cohort, on ROP risk. STUDY DESIGN: We retrospectively analyzed all infants in the Intermountain Health NICUs during the past four years who were born <32 weeks had a NRBC count at birth and had ROP examinations. RESULTS: Records of 386 infants demonstrated that both factors are associated with

Prognostic Role of Cell Blood Count in Chronic Myeloid Neoplasm and Acute Myeloid Leukemia and Its Possible Implications in Hematopoietic Stem Cell Transplantation.

Numerous prognostic indexes have been developed in hematological diseases based on patient characteristics and genetic or molecular assessment. However, less attention was paid to more accessible parameters, such as neutrophils, lymphocytes, monocytes, and platelet counts. Although many studies have defined the role of neutrophil-to-lymphocyte or platelet-to-lymphocyte in lymphoid malignancies, few applications exist for myeloid neoplasm or hematopoietic stem cell transplantation procedures. In this review, we synthesized literature data on the prognostic value of count blood cells in myeloid

Effect of Anticoagulants on Blood Cell Counts, Cell Morphology, and Leukocyte Immune Functions of Rainbow Trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss).

Hematological and immunological parameters may be influenced by various factors, including anticoagulants used to collect blood samples. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of three different anticoagulants (Li-Heparin, K3EDTA, and ACD-A) on rainbow trout blood cell count and morphology, leukocyte viability, ROS production, and phagocytosis. These evaluations were assessed through a combined approach based on flow cytometry and microscopy. Blood cell counts revealed differences in erythrocyte and thrombocyte count between anticoagulants (p < 0.001 and p < 0.01, respectively). Whole-blood s…

Negative prognostic impact of low absolute CD4+ T cell counts in peripheral blood in mantle cell lymphoma.

Tumor microenvironment and host immunity are closely related to outcome in patients with mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). However, few researchers have focused on the prognostic value of peripheral blood lymphocyte subsets counts. The purpose of this study was to investigate the prognostic value of lymphocyte subsets and absolute monocyte counts. Sixty-eight patients were analyzed retrospectively. Absolute CD4+ T cell counts (ACD4C), CD8+ T cell counts, nature killer cell counts, and CD4/CD8 ratios were assessed by peripheral blood flow cytometry and correlated with clinical parameters and long-ter…

A rare case of extremely high counts of circulating tumor cells detected in a patient with an oral squamous cell carcinoma.

BACKGROUND: Despite aggressive regimens, the clinical outcome of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma remains poor. The detection of circulating tumor cells could potentially improve the management of patients with disseminated cancer, including diagnosis, treatment strategies, and surveillance. Currently, CellSearch(®) is the most widely used and the only Food and Drug Administration-cleared system for circulating tumor cells detection in patients with metastatic breast, colorectal, or prostate cancer. In most cases of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma, only low counts of circulating tum

Decreased CD4+ T cell counts drive aberrant B cell repertoire alterations in people living with HIV.

Understanding the evolution of broadly neutralizing antibody (bNAb) activity in people living with HIV is crucial for vaccine design and immunization strategies. It has been proposed that antibody cross-reactive activity is associated with lower CD4+ T cell counts during people living with HIV, but the underlying mechanisms remain unclear. To further explore the correlation between antibody reactivity and CD4+ T cell counts, we recruited people living with HIV with varying CD4+ T cell counts: (i) CD4+ T cell ≤50 cells/μL, (ii) 50 cells/μL < CD4+ T cell ≤200 cells/μL, (iii) 200 cells/μL < CD4+ …

Low absolute NK cell counts in peripheral blood are associated with inferior survival in patients with mantle cell lymphoma.

BACKGROUND: Although risk stratification of mantle cell lymphoma (MCL) is most frequently performed using the simplified MCL International Prognostic Index (sMIPI), the identification of host-related factors and tumor microenvironment, including absolute monocyte counts (AMC) and peripheral blood T lymphocyte subsets, especially absolute natural killer cell counts (ANKC) has been suggested to be critical in the prediction of prognosis and the guidance of treatment. OBJECTIVE: This study was aimed at investigating whether peripheral blood ANKC and AMC at diagnosis had an impact on MCL prognosi…

Relationship between automated total nucleated cell count and enumeration of cells on direct smears of canine synovial fluid.

Canine osteoarthritis is a common disorder seen in veterinary clinical practice and causes considerable morbidity in dogs as they age. Synovial fluid analysis is an important tool for diagnosis and treatment of canine joint disease and obtaining a total nucleated cell count (TNCC) is particularly important. However, the low sample volumes obtained during arthrocentesis are often insufficient for performing an automated TNCC, thereby limiting diagnostic interpretation. The aim of the present study was to investigate whether estimation of TNCC in canine synovial fluid could be achieved by perfor…

Longitudinal trends of total white blood cell and differential white blood cell counts of atomic bomb survivors.

In studying the late health effects of atomic-bomb (A-bomb) survivors, earlier findings were that white blood cell (WBC) count increased with radiation dose in cross-sectional studies. However, a persistent effect of radiation on WBC count and other risk factors has yet to be confirmed. The objectives of the present study were 1) to examine the longitudinal relationship between A-bomb radiation dose and WBC and differential WBC counts among A-bomb survivors and 2) to investigate the potential confounding risk factors (such as age at exposure and smoking status) as well as modification of the r

Comparison the cytotoxicity of hydroxyapatite measured by direct cell counting and MTT test in murine fibroblast NIH-3T3 cells.

The worldwide growing interest to biomaterials over the last years results from their irreplaceable role in medical clinic. Hydroxyapatite is used in bone reconstruction because of its similar chemical structure compared to the inorganic composition of human bone and it is basic building component of many newly prepared biomaterials. In this study, we evaluated cytotoxic/antiproliferative activity of hydroxyapatite extract using murine fibroblast cell line NIH-3T3 and two in vitro different cytotoxic assays: growth inhibition assay and MTT assay. Hydroxyapatite extract after 72 h of incubation

The Impact of White Blood Cell Count Trajectories on Prognosis and Secondary Acute Kidney Injury in Sepsis Patients.

BACKGROUND: Sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) is a common and severe complication in critically ill patients, yet the prognostic value of longitudinal white blood cell (WBC) dynamics remains underexplored. Most studies rely on single-timepoint measurements, potentially overlooking important dynamic information for risk stratification. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to identify distinct WBC trajectory patterns during the first 7 days of ICU admission and evaluate their associations with mortality and secondary AKI in sepsis patients. METHODS: This retrospective cohort study analyze

Spatio-temporal patterns and climate-associated risk of elevated somatic cell count in dairy herd under tropical conditions.

Somatic cell count (SCC) is a widely used indicator of udder health and milk quality in dairy cattle; however, its spatio-temporal dynamics under tropical production conditions remain poorly understood. This study aimed to characterize spatio-temporal patterns of herd-level SCC and to evaluate associations between climatic conditions and SCC variation in Northern Thailand. An observational longitudinal study was conducted using 5,045 monthly herd-level observations from 102 dairy farms in Chiang Mai between January 2022 and August 2025. SCC was log10-transformed and analyzed as the primary out…

Blood Cell Count-Based Inflammatory Markers Exhibit Superior Association with Diabetic Peripheral Neuropathy Compared to Protein-Based Markers.

BACKGROUND: Diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) is a prevalent and disabling complication of type 2 diabetes mellitus, contributing to poor quality of life and increased healthcare burden. Chronic low-grade inflammation has been proposed as a key contributor to the pathogenesis of DPN. While various inflammatory markers have been studied, their diagnostic utility remains unclear, particularly when comparing protein-based markers and blood cell count-derived ratios. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to investigate whether blood cell count-based inflammatory markers, such as the neutrophil-to-lympho…
