Neuroprotective Effects of Coffee Bioactive Compounds: A Review.

Coffee is one of the most widely consumed beverages worldwide. It is usually identified as a stimulant because of a high content of caffeine. However, caffeine is not the only coffee bioactive component. The coffee beverage is in fact a mixture of a number of bioactive compounds such as polyphenols, especially chlorogenic acids (in green beans) and caffeic acid (in roasted coffee beans), alkaloids (caffeine and trigonelline), and the diterpenes (cafestol and kahweol). Extensive research shows that coffee consumption appears to have beneficial effects on human health. Regular coffee intake may …

Protective effects of phenolic acids on mercury-induced DNA damage in precision-cut kidney slices.

OBJECTIVES: Precision-cut tissue slices are considered an organotypic 3D model widely used in biomedical research. The comet assay is an imp … t hamster kidney slices to analyze the antigenotoxic effect of the phenolic compounds caffeic acid, chlorogenic acid, and rosmarinic acid in tissue slices incubated with 15 µM HgCl2. Cytotoxicity of the phenolic compounds was studied in Vero cells, and by morphologic analysis in tissue slices co-incubated with HgCl2 and phenolic compounds. RESULTS: A modification …

Identification of Bioactive Metabolites of Capirona macrophylla by Metabolomic Analysis, Molecular Docking, and In Vitro Antiparasitic Assays.

Capirona macrophylla is a Rubiaceae known as "mulateiro". Ethnobotanical extracts have been used for skin treatment and in the management of … spectra among the "mulateiro" samples. GNPS clustering highlighted large clusters of quercetin and chlorogenic acid groups. The most abundant metabolites were isofraxidin, scopoletin, 5(S)-5-carboxystrictosidine, loliolide, quercetin, quinic acid, caffeoylquinic acid (and isomers), chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid, tryptophan, N-acetyltryptophan, epicatechin …

BACKGROUND: Age-associated cognitive deterioration and neurodegenerative conditions, including Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's dise … creased dietary consumption of phenolic acids, especially hydroxycinnamic acids such as caffeic and chlorogenic acid, is associated with enhanced cognitive performance and a diminished risk of cognitive decline, although results are not uniform. CONCLUSION: Phenolic acids are secure, readily accessible neuroprotective compounds that can alter various pathological …

Dual microelectromembrane extraction as a tunable platform for the determination of antioxidant compounds with varied hydrophobicity in oral bioaccessibility assays of food commodities: a proof of concept.

An automatic millifluidic dual microelectromembrane extraction (D-µEME) method as a front-end to HPLC-UV-Vis is herein proposed for the firs … ptor phases automatically prior to online HPLC-UV-Vis. The target antioxidants involve gallic acid, chlorogenic acid, 4-hydroxybenzoic acid, caffeic acid, and trans-cinnamic acid. Various solvents are explored to investigate their compatibility for simultaneous D-µEME, including 1-pentanol, 1-hexanol, 1-heptanol, 1-octanol, and 1-nonanol, as well as deep eutectic …

Alleviation of nonalcoholic steatohepatitis induced by tetracycline in rats by Coffee Arabica extract through autophagy signals (mTOR/LC3-B).

The autophagy mechanism is a key point for liver protection against nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). By specifically selecting Coffea arabica, this study leverages its high concentration of chlorogenic acid to modulate autophagy, a critical cellular recycling process that is typically suppressed during the development of NASH-related liver damage. We investigated the impact of Coffea Arabica methanolic extract (CAME) on autophagy-related markers (mTOR and LC3-B) mediated abrogation of tetracycline (TET) induced NASH in rats. Sixty male albino rats weighing 150 ± 10 g were equally divided i…

LC-ESI-MS/MS Profiling and In Vitro Evaluation of Antioxidant, Enzymatic Inhibitory, and Cytotoxic Activities, Along With Complementary In Vitro and In Silico Assessment of the Antibacterial Potential of Centaurea papposa Leaf Extracts.

The main objective of this study was to characterize the phenolic composition of the hydromethanolic extract and its fractions from Centaurea papposa leaves, and to evaluate their antioxidant, enzymatic inhibitory, cytotoxic, and antibacterial activities. In addition, molecular docking analysis was performed using dihydropteroate synthase as the bacterial target enzyme to explore the interactions with major phenolic compounds. LC-MS/MS analysis identified shikimic acid and chlorogenic acid as predominant in the hydromethanolic extract. In the ethyl acetate fraction, vanillic acid, protocatechu…

Eucommia ulmoides Bark Extract Attenuates Oxidative Damage and H2O2-Induced Hair Follicle Suppression in Cellular and Mouse Models.

Oxidative stress contributes to hair follicle aging, melanocyte dysfunction, and androgen-related hair disorders, yet chemically characterized botanical interventions with multi-target activities remain incompletely defined. This study evaluated the antioxidant, follicle-supporting, and antiandrogenic potential of Eucommia ulmoides bark extract (EUE) using integrated in vitro and in vivo approaches and characterized EUE by HPLC-DAD using geniposidic acid and chlorogenic acid as representative marker compounds. Chlorogenic acid and geniposidic acid were present at 3.21 ± 0.01 and 1.88 ± 0.15 mg…

A network pharmacology-based approach to understand the mechanism of action of anti-mycobacterial activity of Acacia nilotica: a modelling and experimental study.

The rapid rise in drug-resistant tuberculosis poses a serious threat to public health and demands the discovery of new anti-mycobacterial ag … iogenesis proteins, especially FtsZ and Mur. Notably, the compounds epigallocatechin, ellagic acid, chlorogenic acid, and D-pinitol were found to exhibit a potential polypharmacological effect against multiple proteins. Further, in vitro studies confirmed that the selected candidates, chlorogenic acid, and ellagic acid exhibited potent anti-mycobacterial activity …

Assessment of Phenolic Composition, Antioxidant Potential, Antimicrobial Properties, and Antidiabetic Activity in Extracts Obtained from Schinus molle L. Leaves and Fruits.

BACKGROUND: The current research centers on exploring the antioxidant, antimicrobial, and antidiabetic features of Schinus molle L. grown in Turkey. METHODS: Quantitative analysis of chlorogenic acid, caffeic acid, and hyperoside levels in leaf, ripe fruit, and raw fruit extracts was conducted using High-Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) in a 70% methanol-water mixture. Among the extracts, the methanol extract from ripe fruits displayed the highest chlorogenic acid concentration, measuring at 2.040% ± 0.172% standard deviation (SD). Moreover, analysis of their total phenolic and flavon…
