A health belief model of condom use was used to identify factors associated with condom use in 390 sexually active female adolescents, aged 12 through 19 years, recruited at the time of a visit for reproductive health care. OBJECTIVE: To determine the risk of sexual transmission of genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) in heterosexual couples.
DESIGN: Prospective study of couples who were participants in a clinical trial. Each source partner had symptomatic, recurrent genital HSV, and each susceptible partner was without serologic or clinical evidence of genital herpes. Couples were followed for a median of 334 days.
SETTING: Two university-based research clinics.

The intrauterine contraceptive device (IUD) is a very effective form of emergency contraception (EC). This author hypothesised that IUDs are an underused method and determined to evaluate potential barriers to IUD use. BACKGROUND: Postpartum family planning (PPFP) is important in reducing the risk of complications associated with closely spaced pregnancies. Family planning (FP) programmes usually promote the use of modern methods rather than traditional methods as the latter have a higher failure rate. The need for behavioral change of risky sexual practices has been of the highest priority since the onset of the AIDS epidemic. The major focus of education for safe sex has been emphasis on condom use. We used interviews of 268 subjects to ascertain knowledge, attitudes, beliefs and practices related to AIDS among Montrealers of Haitian origin, from November 1987 through October 1988. This is a retrospective analysis of 79 spinal cord injury patients who have had penile implants from one to 14 years. The primary indication for implants was the loss of condom catheter with a small retractile penis. Mean period after injury to when the implants were placed was 8.24 years (range 1-21 years). A total of 56 male spinal cord injury patients on condom catheter drainage was studied prospectively within 6 months of the injuries for 5 years. Low bladder pressures (filling maximum 35 cm. water and voiding maximum 70 cm. water) were ascertained with video-urodynamics.
