RETROSPECTIVE SURVEY FOR PATHOGENS IN STRANDED MARINE MAMMALS IN NORTHEASTERN BRAZIL: BRUCELLA SPP. INFECTION IN A CLYMENE DOLPHIN ( STENELLA CLYMENE).

:  We surveyed 13 carcasses of marine mammals (12 Trichechus manatus and one Stenella clymene) that had stranded in northeastern Brazil during 1990-2013 for infectious diseases by screening tissues from the collection of the Brazilian National Center of Research and Conservation of Aquatic Mammal, Chico Mendes Institute for Biodiversity Conservation. Brucella spp. and Mycobacterium spp. were investigated by culturing and PCR of tissue samples, whereas Sarcocystidae parasites, Leptospira spp., and Morbillivirus were surveyed for using specific PCR assays. Brucella spp. and Mycobacterium spp. we

Neutrophil differentials in bronchoalveolar lavage fluid in bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) during treatment of respiratory infection: a preliminary study.

Respiratory infections are major health concerns in wild and managed cetaceans, yet reliable methods for assessing lower respiratory tract inflammation are limited. We aimed to evaluate the clinical utility of bronchoalveolar lavage fluid (BALF) neutrophil differentials in three managed bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) and three managed beluga whales (Delphinapterus leucas) undergoing treatment for respiratory infections. Infection status was monitored by assessing isolated bacteria and fungi from BALF, BALF neutrophil differentials, and inflammatory markers in the blood, such as total…

Age-related changes in the primary auditory cortex of newborn, adults and aging bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus) are located in the upper cortical layers.

INTRODUCTION: The auditory system of dolphins and whales allows them to dive in dark waters, hunt for prey well below the limit of solar light absorption, and to communicate with their conspecific. These complex behaviors require specific and sufficient functional circuitry in the neocortex, and vicarious learning capacities. Dolphins are also precocious animals that can hold their breath and swim within minutes after birth. However, diving and hunting behaviors are likely not innate and need to be learned. Our hypothesis is that the organization of the auditory cortex of dolphins grows and ma…

Five members of a mixed-sex group of bottlenose dolphins share a stereotyped whistle contour in addition to maintaining their individually distinctive signature whistles.

Most commonly, animal communication systems are driven by shared call repertoires, with some individual distinctiveness encoded as a byproduct of voice cues. We provide evidence that bottlenose dolphins produce both individually distinctive whistles, and a shared whistle type. A stereotyped whistle contour (termed the group whistle) is shared by five bottlenose dolphins that have lived, worked, and traveled together for at least 21 years. These five dolphins are members of a group of eight dolphins that work as a specialized team for the Navy Marine Mammal Program. Each dolphin is routinely re…

Comparative proteomic characterization of seminal plasma and sperm proteins associated with reproductive function in the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus).

BACKGROUND AND AIM: Proteomic characterization of semen provides molecular insights into reproductive function beyond conventional semen evaluation. Although the seminal plasma and sperm proteomes of the common bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) have been reported, corresponding information for the Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) is lacking. This study aimed to characterize the protein composition of seminal plasma and sperm in T. aduncus to identify proteins and biological pathways associated with reproductive function. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Semen samples were collec

Dolphin Pituitary Gland: Immunohistochemistry and Ultrastructural Cell Characterization Following a Novel Anatomical Dissection Protocol and Non-Invasive Imaging (MRI).

The pituitary gland regulates essential physiological processes in mammals. Despite its importance, research on its anatomy and ultrastructure in dolphins remains scarce. Using non-invasive imaging technology (MRI) and a novel skull-opening and dissection protocol, this study characterizes the dolphin pituitary through immunohistochemistry (IHC) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). A total of 47 pituitaries were collected from stranded common bottlenose dolphins (Tursiops truncatus). common dolphins (Delphinus delphis), and Atlantic spotted dolphins (Stenella frontalis). as well as from…

Immunolocalization of Two Neurotrophins, NGF and BDNF, in the Pancreas of the South American Sea Lion Otaria flavescens and Bottlenose Dolphin Tursiops truncatus.

In this study, we have investigated the immunolocalization of NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) and BDNF (Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor) in the pancreas of two species of marine mammals: Tursiops truncatus (common bottlenose dolphin), belonging to the order of the Artiodactyla, and Otaria flavescens (South American sea lion), belonging to the order of the Carnivora. Our results demonstrated a significant presence of NGF and BDNF in the pancreas of both species with a wide distribution pattern observed in the exocrine and endocrine components. We identified some differences that can be attributed t

Detection of Leptospira kirschneri in a short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis delphis) stranded off the coast of southern California, USA.

BACKGROUND: Pathogenic Leptospira species are globally important zoonotic pathogens capable of infecting a wide range of host species. In marine mammals, reports of Leptospira have predominantly been in pinnipeds, with isolated reports of infections in cetaceans. CASE PRESENTATION: On 28 June 2021, a 150.5 cm long female, short-beaked common dolphin (Delphinus delphis delphis) stranded alive on the coast of southern California and subsequently died. Gross necropsy revealed multifocal cortical pallor within the reniculi of the kidney, and lymphoplasmacytic tubulointerstitial nephritis was obse

An evolutionary medicine perspective on the cetacean pulmonary immune system - The first identification of SP-D and LBP in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus).

Evolutionary medicine expresses the present status of biomolecules affected by past evolutionary events. To clarify the whole picture of cetacean pneumonia, which is a major threat to cetaceans, their pulmonary immune system should be studied from the perspective of evolutionary medicine. In this in silico study, we focused on cetacean surfactant protein D (SP-D) and lipopolysaccharide-binding protein (LBP) as two representative molecules of the cetacean pulmonary immune system. Sequencing and analyzing SP-D and LBP in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) lung and liver tissue collected

The T Cell Receptor (TRB) Locus in Tursiops truncatus: From Sequence to Structure of the Alpha/Beta Heterodimer in the Human/Dolphin Comparison.

The bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) belongs to the Cetartiodactyla and, similarly to other cetaceans, represents the most successful mammalian colonization of the aquatic environment. Here we report a genomic, evolutionary, and expression study of T. truncatus T cell receptor beta (TRB) genes. Although the organization of the dolphin TRB locus is similar to that of the other artiodactyl species, with three in tandem D-J-C clusters located at its 3' end, its uniqueness is given by the reduction of the total length due essentially to the absence of duplications and to the deletions that

Analysis of diarrhetic shellfish poisoning toxins and pectenotoxin-2 in the bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry.

Toxins produced by harmful algae are associated with detrimental health effects and mass mortalities of marine mammals. Liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS) is generally used to confirm the presence of algal toxins in marine mammals. Sample preparation and LC-MS/MS methods for the determination of three diarrhetic shellfish poisoning (DSP) toxins (okadaic acid, OA; dinophysistoxin-1, DTX1; dinophysistoxin-2, DTX2) and pectenotoxin-2 (PTX2) in bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) urine and tissue samples were evaluated using spike-and-recovery tests. A case of stranded Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) with lobomycosis-like skin lesions in Kinko-wan, Kagoshima, Japan.

Lobomycosis is a chronic fungal disease caused by the etiologic agent, Lacazia loboi, in the skin and subcutaneous tissues in humans and dolphins in tropical and transitional tropical climates. An Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin (Tursiops aduncus) stranded in Kagoshima, Japan, had severe skin lesions characterized by granulomatous reactions and hyperkeratosis that were similar to those of the lobomycosis, but no fungal organism was observed in the skin lesion. In this paper, we report a stranded Indo-Pacific bottlenose dolphin with lobomycosis-like lesions based on pathological examinations in…

Causes of death and pathogen prevalence in bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus stranded in Alabama, USA, between 2015 and 2020, following the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.

Between 2010 and 2014, an unusual mortality event (UME) involving bottlenose dolphins Tursiops truncatus occurred in the northern Gulf of Mexico, associated with the Deepwater Horizon oil spill (DWHOS). Cause of death (COD) patterns in bottlenose dolphins since then have not been analyzed, and baseline prevalence data for Brucella ceti and cetacean morbillivirus, 2 pathogens previously reported in this region, are lacking. We analyzed records from bottlenose dolphins stranded in Alabama from 2015 to 2020 with necropsy and histological findings to determine COD (n = 108). This period included a…

Peripheral anatomy of the dolphin ear and associated nervous structures: Insights from macroscopic dissection, DICE-µCT, histology, and confocal microscopy.

The peripheral auditory system of dolphins comprises specialised bony, fatty, vascular, and neural structures adapted for underwater hearing and diving physiology. These include the external ear canal, acoustic fat bodies, sinuses, and associated neurovascular networks, which together support sound conduction, protection, and possibly sensory functions. Despite advances in gross anatomical description, the detailed integration of these tissues, particularly the innervation, neurovascular organisation, and their functional implications, remains poorly understood. Previous studies have described…

DS-CNN: Deep Convolutional Neural Networks for Facial Emotion Detection in Children with Down Syndrome during Dolphin-Assisted Therapy.

In Mexico, according to data from the General Directorate of Health Information (2018), there is an annual incidence of 689 newborns with Trisomy 21, well-known as Down Syndrome. Worldwide, this incidence is estimated between 1 in every 1000 newborns, approximately. That is why this work focuses on the detection and analysis of facial emotions in children with Down Syndrome in order to predict their emotions throughout a dolphin-assisted therapy. In this work, two databases are used: Exploratory Data Analysis, with a total of 20,214 images, and the Down's Syndrome Dataset database, with 1445 i

Dolutegravir versus efavirenz in women starting HIV therapy in late pregnancy (DolPHIN-2): an open-label, randomised controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Late initiation of HIV antiretroviral therapy (ART) in pregnancy is associated with not achieving viral suppression before giving birth and increased mother-to-child transmission of HIV. We aimed to investigate virological suppression before giving birth with dolutegravir compared with efavirenz, when initiated during the third trimester. METHODS: In this randomised, open-label trial, DolPHIN-2, we recruited pregnant women in South Africa and Uganda aged at least 18 years, with untreated but confirmed HIV infection and an estimated gestation of at least 28 weeks, initiating ART in
