Case Report: Human Recombinant Growth Hormone Therapy in a DSH Cat Presented With Dwarfism.

A 6-month-old kitten, male, domestic shorthair cat was presented with dwarfism, ocular and nasal discharge, and Ascaris infestation. Congenital hyposomatotropism was diagnosed on the basis of serum level of insulin-like growth factor-1 (IGF-I). The cat was treated with human recombinant growth hormone for 9 weeks. After that, his liver enzymes became elevated, and the therapy was discontinued. His IGF-I levels were normal at the end of the therapy. Normal IGF-I was present 3 months after discontinuation of therapy with human recombinant growth hormone and even half a year after the discontinua

Microcephalic Osteodysplastic Primordial Dwarfism in Two Siblings Living in Sindh, Pakistan: A Case Report.

Microcephalic osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type 2 (MOPD2) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder that presents as a myriad of skeletal abnormalities collectively termed as osteodysplasia, which have their onset during intrauterine life with the fetus exhibiting intrauterine growth restriction. Affected individuals also tend to have a very small head size that is more than three standard deviations (SD) below the mean for a population termed microcephalic. The growth problems progress postnatally, causing stunted growth or short stature. In this report, we present the case of two sibling

Bilateral Total Hip Replacement in Dwarfism With a Custom Laser-Printed Trabecular Acetabular Shell.

Total hip arthroplasty in cases of dwarfism may be a demanding procedure, as the small-sized joints are difficult to replace with standard prostheses, even more so in the presence of dysplastic hips. The authors report a case of bilateral customized total hip arthroplasty performed in a young patient with proportionated dwarfism with bilateral hip dysplasia. To ensure sufficient stabilization of the cup, roof bone grafting was performed. The custom-made acetabular component was a trabecular acetabular shell manufactured using selective laser melting technology to ensure an optimal porous struc

Gain-of-function DNMT3A mutations cause microcephalic dwarfism and hypermethylation of Polycomb-regulated regions.

DNA methylation and Polycomb are key factors in the establishment of vertebrate cellular identity and fate. Here we report de novo missense mutations in DNMT3A, which encodes the DNA methyltransferase DNMT3A. These mutations cause microcephalic dwarfism, a hypocellular disorder of extreme global growth failure. Substitutions in the PWWP domain abrogate binding to the histone modifications H3K36me2 and H3K36me3, and alter DNA methylation in patient cells. Polycomb-associated DNA methylation valleys, hypomethylated domains encompassing developmental genes, become methylated with concomitant depl

Growth in individuals with Majewski osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II caused by pericentrin mutations.

Microcephalic primordial dwarfism (MPD) is a class of disorders characterized by intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), impaired postnatal growth and microcephaly. Majewski osteodysplastic primordial dwarfism type II (MOPD II) is one of the more common conditions within this group. MOPD II is caused by truncating mutations in pericentrin (PCNT) and is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Detailed growth curves for length, weight, and OFC are presented here and derived from retrospective data from 26 individuals with MOPD II confirmed by molecular or functional studies. Severe pre- and

[Prenatal diagnosis of thanatophoric dwarfism with a cloverleaf skull--ultrasonographic findings, humane genetic aspects].

The ultrasonographic criteria for the prenatal diagnosis of thanatophore dwarfism with clover leaf skull are described. Facultative morbid anatomical peculiarities are described. Because of the prenatal findings the pregnancy was terminated by Caesarean Section at 30 weeks gestation in our case. Following the death of the infant the diagnosis was confirmed by radiological investigations and by autopsy. The ultrasonographic differential diagnosis from other types of dwarfism is discussed. The human genetic aspects are discussed with emphasis on the counselling regarding further pregnancies.

The Iberian fossil record of †Otodus megalodon rejects Mediterranean dwarfism and supports nursery use.

†Otodus megalodon, the largest known macropredatory shark, was globally distributed from the Miocene to Pliocene, yet most ecological and palaeobiological inferences rely heavily on American collections. This geographical bias limits understanding of its population structure and life-history strategies elsewhere. Two explanations have been proposed for its body-size patterns: a Bergmann-type cline, with larger individuals at higher, cooler latitudes and a related hypothesis of Mediterranean dwarfism; and the influence of localized nursery areas that generate assemblages dominated by small juve

Maternal decision-making through temporal uncertainties: The anticipatory biopolitics of Vosoritide in dwarfism communities.

Vosoritide, a biotechnological therapy designed to increase growth in children with achondroplasia, has introduced new pressures and bodily possibilities for families navigating this rare genetic condition. While debates around its use often centre on its efficacy as a non-surgical growth treatment for the most common form of non-lethal human dwarfism, far less attention has been paid to how the medication (re)shapes the temporal landscape of maternal decision-making, children's bodily autonomy, and community dynamics. Drawing on qualitative interviews with mothers from UK dwarfism communities

Novel goose parvovirus in domestic Linwu sheldrakes with short beak and dwarfism syndrome, China.

Recently, short beak and dwarfism syndrome (SBDS) had a sudden outbreak in Cherry Valley duck flocks, followed by Pekin ducks and mule ducks in various regions of mainland China. This widely spreading infectious disease was characterized by growth retardation, smaller beak and tarsus with high morbidity and low mortality rate. In this study, we identified and characterized virus from domestic Linwu sheldrakes (namely as HuN18) with SBDS. HuN18 isolates shared high nucleotide identity with novel goose parvovirus (N-GPV). A 5110-nucleotide full-length genome sequence of HuN18 was found with no d

Comparative transcriptome analysis provides insights into dwarfism in cherry tomato (Solanum lycopersicum var. cerasiforme).

Tomato, which can be eaten as a vegetable or fruit, is one of the most popular and nutritionally important crops around the world. Although most plants of the cherry tomato cultivar 'Minichal' have a normal phenotype, some plants have a stunted phenotype with reduced plant height, leaf size, and fruit size, as well as altered leaf and fruit shape. To investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying these differences, we generated RNA-seq libraries from pooled leaf samples of 10 normal (N) and 10 stunted (S) plants. Using the Illumina sequencing platform, we obtained a total of 115.45 million hi

Dwarfism and insulin resistance in male offspring caused by α1-adrenergic antagonism during pregnancy.

OBJECTIVE: Maternal and environmental factors control the epigenetic fetal programming of the embryo, thereby defining the susceptibility for metabolic or endocrine disorders in the offspring. Pharmacological interventions required as a consequence of gestational problems, e.g. hypertension, can potentially interfere with correct fetal programming. As epigenetic alterations are usually only revealed later in life and not detected in studies focusing on early perinatal outcomes, little is known about the long-term epigenetic effects of gestational drug treatments. We sought to test the conseque

TRAIP promotes DNA damage response during genome replication and is mutated in primordial dwarfism.

DNA lesions encountered by replicative polymerases threaten genome stability and cell cycle progression. Here we report the identification of mutations in TRAIP, encoding an E3 RING ubiquitin ligase, in patients with microcephalic primordial dwarfism. We establish that TRAIP relocalizes to sites of DNA damage, where it is required for optimal phosphorylation of H2AX and RPA2 during S-phase in response to ultraviolet (UV) irradiation, as well as fork progression through UV-induced DNA lesions. TRAIP is necessary for efficient cell cycle progression and mutations in TRAIP therefore limit cellula

De Novo GMNN Mutations Cause Autosomal-Dominant Primordial Dwarfism Associated with Meier-Gorlin Syndrome.

Meier-Gorlin syndrome (MGS) is a genetically heterogeneous primordial dwarfism syndrome known to be caused by biallelic loss-of-function mutations in one of five genes encoding pre-replication complex proteins: ORC1, ORC4, ORC6, CDT1, and CDC6. Mutations in these genes cause disruption of the origin of DNA replication initiation. To date, only an autosomal-recessive inheritance pattern has been described in individuals with this disorder, with a molecular etiology established in about three-fourths of cases. Here, we report three subjects with MGS and de novo heterozygous mutations in the 5' e

Meier-Gorlin syndrome: growth and secondary sexual development of a microcephalic primordial dwarfism disorder.

Meier-Gorlin syndrome (MGS) is a rare autosomal recessive disorder characterized by primordial dwarfism, microtia, and patellar aplasia/hypoplasia. Recently, mutations in the ORC1, ORC4, ORC6, CDT1, and CDC6 genes, encoding components of the pre-replication complex, have been identified. This complex is essential for DNA replication and therefore mutations are expected to impair cell proliferation and consequently could globally reduce growth. However, detailed growth characteristics of MGS patients have not been reported, and so this is addressed here through study of 45 MGS patients, the lar
