Effects of low dose trapidil on electrical properties of a rat peripheral nerve after crush injury.

BACKGROUND: Trapidil has been shown to possess the protective effects in the treatment of ischemia and reperfusion injury in the peripheral nervous system. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of low dose trapidil on peripheral nerve regeneration with electrophysiological method. METHODS: The sciatic nerve was compressed for 20 sec by using a jeweler's forceps. Trapidil treatment groups were administrated a single dose of trapidil (8 mg/kg) intraperitoneally just after the injury. Electrophysiological recordings were performed in crush and crush + trapidil treatment groups o

Refinements in the technique of 'awake' electrical nerve stimulation in the management of chronic low ulnar nerve injuries.

The standard technique in the management of chronic low ulnar nerve injuries includes excision of the neuroma and reconstruction using sural nerve grafts in the fully anaesthetised patient. It has been shown that using this standard technique, disappointing results may be observed and that significant improvement in results could be obtained if intra-operative matching of sensory and motor fascicles is performed. This study reports on eight patients with chronic ulnar nerve injuries managed using the technique of electrical fascicular orientation and sural nerve grafting. In all patients, intr

Muscle atrophy is prevented in patients with acute spinal cord injury using functional electrical stimulation.

Severe muscle atrophy occurs rapidly following traumatic spinal cord injury (SCI). Previous research shows that neuromuscular or 'functional' electrical stimulation (FES), particularly FES-cycle ergometry (FES-CE) can cause muscle hypertrophy in individuals with chronic SCI (> 1 year post-injury). However, the modest degree of hypertrophy in these already atrophied muscles has lessened earlier hopes that FES therapy would reduce secondary impairments of SCI. It is not known whether FES treatments are effective when used to prevent, rather than reverse, muscle atrophy in individuals with acute

Safety of transcutaneous electrical stimulation potentiating recovery in acute spinal cord injury syndromes: a trial protocol.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Spinal cord injury (SCI) often results in permanent paralysis, leading to substantial long-term disability and loss of quality-adjusted life years. Strategies to preserve neural function in the hyperacute phase are needed. Transcutaneous spinal cord stimulation (tSCS) improves neurological function in chronic SCI. Earlier implementation in acute SCI may preserve or restore function and improve recovery. METHODS: STEP-RAISE is a Phase 1/2 prospective clinical trial evaluating the safety and preliminary efficacy of tSCS in acute moderate-to-severe traumatic SCI. Elect

E-Bikes (Electrical Bicycles and Scooters) Related Neurosurgical Injuries in the Adult Population: A Single-Center Experience.

E-bikes (electrical bicycles and scooters) have been increasingly used as a means of transportation, especially among young adults. E-bikers have more accidents, at higher velocities and more severe kinematics, increasing the rate of neurosurgical injuries. Severe neurosurgical injury patterns result in significant morbidity and mortality. We collected data regarding adult patients (>18 years old), who suffered e-bike-related neurosurgical injuries, in a single tertiary medical center in Israel, between July 2019 and June 2020. Fifty-eight consecutive patients were included in this study. The
