We report a facile intracellular manipulation of fluorescent magnetic Fe3O4-CdSe nanoparticles using magnetic force. The growth of CdSe quantum dots on Fe3O4 nanoparticles produces Fe3O4-CdSe nanoparticles with two distinct properties, fluorescence and superparamagnetism. After nonspecific surface modification using glutathione (GSH), the hydrophilic Fe3O4-CdSe@GSH nanoparticles can be easily uptaken by an HEK293T cell line. The interaction of a series of eight local anaesthetics with cytochrome oxidase chosen as a membrane model protein has been studied with fluorescence technique using quinacrine as a fluorescent probe. The existence of hydrophobic interactions with a non polar region of cytochrome oxidase complex has been shown. Chiral fluorescent macrocycles consisting of two to four units of dimethyl 2,5-diaminoterephthalate can be readily synthesized in a one-pot manner from inexpensive building blocks. Depending on the concentration, either a paracyclophane-like dimer with closely stacked benzene rings or a triangular trimer is the main product of the reaction.
