Thyroglossal Duct Cyst Occupying Posterior Hyoid Space with Endolaryngeal Extension Presenting After Neck Trauma.

OBJECTIVE: Thyroglossal duct cysts are the most common congenital neck mass. They typically present as a painless midline neck mass in a child or young adult, but may also present later in adulthood when the cyst becomes symptomatic. Thyroglossal duct cysts are most commonly located inferior to the hyoid bone in close relation with the thyrohyoid membrane. Very rarely, they may extend intralaryngeal, occupy the posterior hyoid space, and present with dysphonia and/or dysphagia. To our knowledge, this is the 24th reported case in the literature. METHODS: Case report with a comprehensive review…

Effect of head position on radiographic assessment of laryngeal tie-forward procedure in horses.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the effect of head position on relative position of the larynx and hyoid apparatus in horses with palatal dysfunction, and to define a standard position for radiographic assessment of laryngeal tie-forward. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective clinical study. ANIMALS: Adult horses (n=9) with palatal dysfunction. METHODS: Left lateral radiographs of the larynx were obtained pre and postoperatively for 3 different head positions (flexed=90 degrees ; neutral=100 degrees ; extended=115 degrees ). Distance between thyrohyoid bone and thyroid cartilage was measured. Data were analyzed t…

A Rare Case of Elongated Styloid Process Fracture.

BACKGROUND An elongated styloid process occurs with Eagle syndrome and causes a variety of symptoms. Fracture of the elongated styloid process is a rare condition. With spontaneous fractures, appropriate treatment cannot be performed in many cases due to unexplained symptoms and indefinite complaints that are not thoroughly examined. CASE REPORT We encountered a case of fractured elongate styloid process reaching the hyoid bone. Based on the findings from cervical 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT), we chose surgery using the transcervical approach instead of the intraoral approach. Sym…

Cephalometric differences between patients with REM- and NREM-Predominant OSA: implications for selecting surgical candidates.

PURPOSE: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common disorder characterized by recurrent upper airway collapse, causing intermittent hypoxemia … were significant risk factors for NPOSA (95% CI, p < 0.05). A posteriorly and inferiorly positioned hyoid bone and a longer tongue length were associated with NREM OSA. CONCLUSION: Anatomical factors, including nasal and maxillary width, hyoid bone position, and tongue length, are linked to OSA type. These findings may suggest that targeted treatments strat …

MRI-based tumor signatures as prognostic biomarkers in oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma.

INTRODUCTION: This study evaluated the prognostic significance of MRI features-peritumoral hyperenhancement, peritumoral hyperenhancement width, peritumoral edema, tumor ulceration, and tumor <5 mm from the hyoid bone-in patients with oral tongue squamous cell carcinoma. Outcomes assessed included overall survival (OS), recurrence-free survival (RFS) [local (LRFS), locoregional (LRRFS), and distant (DRFS)], and disease-free survival (DFS). The secondary objectives included associations with perineural invasion (PNI) and extranodal extension (ENE) on histopathology. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A re…

[Study of mechanisms of lightening aspiration and increasing decannulation rate in anastomosis of cricoid cartilage and base of tongue (epiglottis)].

OBJECTIVE: To study laryngopharyngeal anastomosis and fixing methods of super-cricoid laryngectomy with reconstruction of functions in light … nd increase decannulation rate. Previously the cricoid cartilage was anatomized and fixed under the hyoid bone. Because some spaces exist between cricoid cartilage, base of tongue and epiglottis, aspiration is likely to occur. That hyoid bone covers the entrance of cricoid cartilage will bring constriction of the new laryngeal orifice and make decannulation …

Why Central Neck Dissection Works (and Fails) for Recurrent Thyroglossal Duct Remnants.

OBJECTIVE: To review the patient characteristics and outcomes for children and undergoing central neck dissection for control of recurrent t … first Sistrunk surgery performed by the senior author. Three children operated elsewhere had intact hyoid bones at the time of revision surgery, suggesting less-than-Sistrunk primary surgeries. Central neck dissection controlled disease in the lower neck in all cases. One child re-fistulized at the level of the hyoid. CONCLUSIONS: Central neck dissection in …

Thyroglossal ducts, cysts and sinuses: a recurrent problem.

A review of a series of 63 patients suggests that a high incidence of recurrence occurs following surgery for this condition. Histological examination demonstrates that this is due to failure to remove the central portion of hyoid bone and inadequate dissection of the tract into the tongue base. To overcome these problems, an en bloc anterior neck dissection is recommended which will encompass multiple duct formation associated with the tract.

[Caustic digestive stenosis involving the hypopharynx. Esophagopharyngoplasty using a right ileocolic graft].

The authors describe an oesophago-laryngoplastic technique using a retrosternal ileocolic graft and involving anterior pharyngotomy above the hyoid bone. The technique was applied to five cases of major destructive lesions of the hypopharynx with fibrotic stenosis, due to severe burns of the upper digestive tract by ingestion of caustic substances. Continuity between the oral cavity and the digestive tract was re-established in all cases.

Comparative morphology and physiology of the vocal production apparatus and the brain in the extant primates.

Objective data mainly from the comparative anatomy of various organs related to human speech and language is considered to unearth clues about the mechanisms behind language development. The two organs of the larynx and hyoid bone are considered to have evolved towards suitable positions and forms in preparation for the occurrence of the large repertoire of vocalization necessary for human speech. However, some researchers have asserted that there is no significant difference of these organs between humans and non-human primates. Speech production is dependent on the voluntary control of the r…

Modeling one-handed grip strangulation: Intentionality of the gesture and age influence.

Strangulation is a violent act which can be lethal and is often studied in forensic context. The neck includes several anatomical elements t … rce of 552 N. It is necessary to reach a minimum of 1406 N before observing a first fracture on the hyoid bone. However, it is possible to get stresses on the hyoid bone and on the thyroid cartilage way before 552 N. It thus appears that the force created by one-handed grip strangulation is not sufficient to cause fractures of the bony elements of the neck, …

Ontogeny of the skeleton of Spea bombifrons (anura: Pelobatidae).

The developing skeleton of a pelobatid frog, Spea bombifrons, is described based on a series of 81 cleared-and-stained tadpoles and juveniles. Most limb and limb-girdle elements commence ossification premetamorphically, along with the parasphenoid, frontoparietals, exoccipitals, and vertebral column, during Gosner Stage 36. The chondrocranium undergoes dramatic restructuring at the beginning of metamorphosis (ca. Stage 40); and the nasal cartilages, prootics, premaxillae, nasals, maxillae, septomaxillae, and ischium appear. Near the end of metamorphosis (ca. Stage 44), the branchial arches are

Sublingual ultrasound as an assessment method for predicting difficult intubation: a pilot study.

Current methods to assess the airway before tracheal intubation are variable in their ability to predict a difficult airway accurately. We hypothesised that sublingual ultrasound could provide additional information to predict a difficult airway with greater success than current methods. We recruited 110 patients to perform sublingual ultrasound on themselves following brief instruction. Ability to view the hyoid bone on sublingual ultrasound, mouth opening distance, thyromental distance, neck mobility, size of mandible and modified Mallampati classification were recorded and assessed for abil…
