Associations between type of blood collection, analytical approach, mean haemoglobin and anaemia prevalence in population-based surveys: A systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have observed that haemoglobin concentrations can be affected by type of blood collection, analysis methods and device, and that near-in-time population-based surveys report substantially different anaemia prevalence. We investigated whether differences in mean haemoglobin or prevalence of anaemia between near-in-time surveys of the same population were associated with differences in type of blood collection or analytic approach to haemoglobin measurement. METHODS: We systematically identified pairs of population-based surveys that measured haemoglobin in the same

Global estimates of violence against children with disabilities: an updated systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Previous meta-analysis evidence shows that children (aged 0-18 years) with disabilities experience high amounts of violence. During the past decade, there has been a substantial increase in the volume of available data, and we therefore aimed to update the evidence and provide a current global estimate of violence against children with disabilities. METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis, we searched 18 English-language international databases for observational studies published in English or Chinese between Aug 17, 2010, and Sept 16, 2020, and three Chinese databas

Opium Use and Cancer Risk: A Comprehensive Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Observational Studies.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies have reported inconsistent associations between opium use and cancer risk. We therefore conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to investigate the relationship between opium use and cancer risk. METHODS: We searched PubMed, Scopus, ISI Web of Knowledge, and Google Scholar until February 2021 and references of retrieved relevant articles for observational studies that reported the risk of cancer in relation to opium use. Random-effects models were used to calculate pooled effect sizes (ESs) as well as 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for the associatio

Vitamin D and thyroid disorders: a systematic review and Meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: The contribution of vitamin D to thyroid disorders has received paramount attention; however, results are mixed. Hence, we designed a systematic review and meta-analysis to obtain a definitive conclusion. METHODS: The search included PubMed, ISI Web of Science, Scopus, and Google Scholar databases up to March 2021 to collect available papers reporting the relationship between serum levels of vitamin D and thyroid disorders. The pooled effect was reported as weighted mean difference (WMD) and 95% confidence interval (CI). RESULTS: Out of 6123 datasets, 42 were eligible to get into

The association between serum homocysteine and depression: A systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Hyperhomocysteinaemia is known to interfere with neurological functions; however, there is a controversy regarding the relationship between homocysteine and depression. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Science Direct, MEDLINE and ISI Web of Science were searched to find relevant articles, published up to August 2020. Studies were included if they compared homocysteine levels in healthy subjects with subjects with depression. Also, articles that reported the association between hyperhomocysteinaemia and risk of depression were included. Odds ratios of depression and means of homocysteine wer

Snoring increases the development of coronary artery disease: a systematic review with meta-analysis of observational studies.

PURPOSE: Snoring is one of the cardinal presentations of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and is more common than OSA. Abundant evidence has suggested a robust association between OSA and coronary artery disease (CAD). However, whether or not snoring alone is related to a higher risk of CAD is unknown. This study systematically reviewed observational studies with meta-analysis to evaluate the linkage between snoring and CAD. METHODS AND RESULTS: We searched PubMed and Embase and retrieved 13 articles focusing on the relationship between snoring and CAD. These articles included a total of 151,366

Associated auto-immune disease in type 1 diabetes patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Introduction The association between type 1 diabetes (T1D) and other auto-immune diseases is well known. However, a quantitative overview of all associated auto-immune diseases and their prevalence in T1D is lacking. Methods We searched PubMed, Web of Science, EMBASE and Cochrane library in September 2018 to identify relevant articles about the prevalence of the following associated auto-immune diseases in T1D cohorts: auto-immune thyroid disease, celiac disease, gastric autoimmunity including pernicious anemia, vitiligo and adrenal gland insufficiency. A meta-analysis was performed to estimat

Cardiac glycosides use and the risk and mortality of cancer; systematic review and meta-analysis of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Cardiac glycosides (CGs) including digitalis, digoxin and digitoxin are used in the treatment of congestive heart failure and atrial fibrillation. Pre-clinical studies have investigated the anti-neoplastic properties of CGs since 1960s. Epidemiological studies concerning the association between CGs use and cancer risk yielded inconsistent results. We have performed a systematic review and meta-analysis to summarize the effects of CGs on cancer risk and mortality. METHODS: PubMed, Scopus, Cochrane library, Medline and Web of Knowledge were searched for identifying relevant studies.

Adverse cardiovascular events associated with triptans and ergotamines for treatment of migraine: systematic review of observational studies.

BACKGROUND: Apart from the underlying cardiovascular (CV) risk associated with migraine, both triptans and ergotamines can induce vasoconstriction and potentially increase the risk of serious ischemic events. Because of the low frequency of such events in eligible patients, randomized controlled trials are not exhaustive to assess the drug-related CV risk. Observational studies are, therefore, an essential source of information to clarify this matter of concern. AIM: The aim of this study was to systematically review the available published observational studies investigating the risk of seri

[Reproducibility of urine strip reactions in medical patients].

Before a method of investigation is introduced in the daily clinical routine, its reproducibility and correctness must be proved. In the present investigation, the reproducibility of urine stix reactions for glucose, haemoglobin and protein were assessed. The urine stix tests were carried out on freshly voided urine from 30 patients selected at random by three junior nurses with seniorities of one, five and nine years. Complete inter- and intraobserver agreement was found for glukose and haemoglobin whereas the reproducibility for protein was unsatisfactory.
