Responsiveness of hand-held dynamometry for measuring changes in trunk muscle strength in people with chronic low back pain.

OBJECTIVE: To assess the responsiveness of a hand-held dynamometer (HHD) in evaluating changes in trunk isometric strength in people with chronic low back pain (LBP). BACKGROUND: Reduced trunk muscle strength has been associated with pain incidence and severity in people with chronic LBP. Trunk muscle strength is an important functional outcome that is measured in clinical practice and research. However, the responsiveness of clinical tools such as HHD for measuring changes in trunk muscle strength remains underexplored. METHODS: Maximum isometric trunk strength was measured using both a HHD

How to experimentally induce fear of movement-related pain and measure psychophysiological and behavioral reactions as a proxy - A scoping review.

Fear can significantly increase the experienced pain intensity in individuals with chronic musculoskeletal pain and limit their ability to engage in daily activities. Fear of movement-related pain (FMRP) is commonly assessed via self-report, but research suggests measuring psychophysiological or behavioral parameters as an alternative. The objective of this scoping review was to identify and evaluate existing paradigms to induce FMRP, as well as the psychophysiological, behavioral and neural measurements used for its assessment. Experimental studies, with adult participants (≥18 years, healthy

Development and pilot of equine facilitated physical therapy outcome measure tool for chronic low back pain patients.

Equine Facilitated Physical Therapy (EFPT) lacks consistent documentation due to being an unconventional physical therapy treatment to chronic low back pain patients (LBP) and lacking rehabilitation outcome measure tools for a stable (equestrian) environment. The objectives were to develop an online evaluation tool as well as to define inter- and intra-rater reliability to validate the outcome measurement tool "Evaluation of maintaining sitting position (on a horse) and walking (short distances)" designed for LBP patients in EFPT". A total of 48 movement related functions (n = 48), were derive

Physical measures of physical functioning as prognostic factors to predict outcomes in low back pain: Protocol for a systematic review.

BACKGROUND: Low back pain (LBP) is a highly prevalent condition that substantially impairs individuals' physical functioning. This highlights the need for effective management strategies to improve patient outcomes. It is, therefore, crucial to have knowledge of physical functioning prognostic factors that can predict outcomes to facilitate the development of targeted treatment plans aiming to achieve better patient outcomes. There is no synthesis of evidence for physical functioning measures as prognostic factors in the LBP population. The objective of this systematic review is to synthesize

Pain is reduced by transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation and correlated with cardiorespiratory variability measures in the context of opioid withdrawal.

Over 100,000 individuals in the United States lost their lives secondary to drug overdose in 2021, with opioid use disorder (OUD) being a leading cause. Pain is an important component of opioid withdrawal, which can complicate recovery from OUD. This study's objectives were to assess the effects of transcutaneous cervical vagus nerve stimulation (tcVNS), a technique shown to reduce sympathetic arousal in other populations, on pain during acute opioid withdrawal and to study pain's relationships with objective cardiorespiratory markers. Twenty patients with OUD underwent opioid withdrawal while

The Utility of an Anxiety Screening Measure in Youth With Functional Abdominal Pain Disorders and Clinical Characteristics Associated With Presence of Anxiety.

OBJECTIVES: Anxiety is common in youth with functional abdominal pain disorders (FAPD) and is related to increased pain-related impairment. However, it is unknown if self-reported anxiety on a clinical screener represents a true anxiety disorder diagnosis in youth with FAPD. Further, little is known about clinical characteristics in youth with FAPD and comorbid anxiety (ANX). Therefore, we evaluated whether the clinical cutoff on the Screen for Anxiety and Related Disorders (SCARED) corresponded with the presence of an anxiety disorder. We predicted a more clinically complex profile (eg, incre

The Short Form of the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale in Post-operative Analgesia Studies in Dogs: A Scoping Review.

The measurement and treatment of acute pain in animals is essential from a welfare perspective. Valid pain-related outcome measures are also crucial for ensuring reliable and translatable findings in veterinary clinical trials. The short form of the Glasgow Composite Measure Pain Scale (CMPS-SF) is a multi-item behavioral pain assessment tool, developed and validated using a psychometric approach, to measure acute pain in the dog. Here we conduct a scoping review to identify prospective research studies that have used the CMPS-SF. We aim to describe the contexts in which it has been used, veri

Automated home-cage monitoring as a potential measure of sickness behaviors and pain-like behaviors in LPS-treated mice.

The use of endotoxin, such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS) as a model of sickness behavior, has attracted recent attention. To objectively investigate sickness behavior along with its pain-like behaviors in LPS-treated mice, the behavioral measurement requires accurate methods, which reflects clinical relevance. While reflexive pain response tests have been used for decades for pain assessment, its accuracy and clinical relevance remain problematic. Hence, we used automated home-cage monitoring LABORAS to evaluate spontaneous locomotive behaviors in LPS-induced mice. LPS-treated mice displayed sic

Measuring the impact of chronic low back pain on everyday functioning: content validity of the Roland Morris disability questionnaire.

BACKGROUND: Robust outcome measures are needed to assess and monitor the impact of chronic low back pain (CLBP) on physical functioning. The Roland Morris Disability Questionnaire (RMDQ) is a well-established measure designed to capture the impacts of back pain on everyday functioning, with a particular emphasis on physical functioning. It has documented evaluation of psychometric properties. However, there is no documented qualitative evidence to confirm the content validity of the tool, nor have changes made for electronic administration been debriefed in participants with CLBP. METHODS: In

Core Outcome Measures for Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain Research: Recommendations from a Veterans Health Administration Work Group.

OBJECTIVE: Chronic musculoskeletal pain (CMSP) disorders are among the most prevalent and disabling conditions worldwide. It would be advantageous to have common outcome measures when comparing results across different CMSP research studies. METHODS: The Veterans Health Administration appointed a work group to recommend core outcome measures for assessing pain intensity and interference as well as important secondary domains in clinical research. The work group used three streams of data to inform their recommendations: 1) literature synthesis augmented by three recently completed trials; 2)

Risk stratification of chest pain patients by point-of-care cardiac troponin T and myoglobin measured in the emergency department.

A prospective multicenter study including 1410 chest pain patients with suspected acute coronary syndromes was carried out to examine the predictive value of biological cardiac markers for adverse events measured by a point-of-care system. Admission cardiac troponin T (cTnT) and myoglobin were measured in parallel on a point-of-care system in the emergency department and -- together with CK-MB mass -- on lab analyzers. In a one-year follow-up, cardiac and non-cardiac death, acute myocardial infarction, unstable angina pectoris and need for revascularization were registered. Median time between

Desire to Receive More Pain Treatment - A Relevant Patient-Reported Outcome Measure to Assess Quality of Post-Operative Pain Management? Results From 79,996 Patients Enrolled in the Pain Registry QUIPS from 2016 to 2019.

Acute postoperative pain is frequently evaluated by pain intensity scores. However, interpretation of the results is difficult and thresholds requiring treatment are not well defined. Additional patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) might be helpful to better understand individual pain experience and quality of pain management after surgery. We used data from the QUIPS pain registry for a cross-sectional study in order to investigate associations between the desire to receive more pain treatment (D2RMPT) with pain intensity ratings and other PROMs. Responses from 79,996 patients were analy

Biomechanical and Parenchymal Determinants of Pain Perception During Mammography: Three-Dimensional Biometric Measurements and the Need for Personalized Compression.

Background/Objectives: Standard mechanical compression applied during screening mammography is a primary barrier that reduces patient compliance. Current guidelines attempt to standardize compression based solely on the one-dimensional "breast thickness" measured by the device. This study aimed to investigate the effects of three-axis anatomical breast dimensions, applied compression force, menstrual cycle phases, and BI-RADS breast density patterns on pain scores during mammography within a comprehensive biomechanical model. Methods: This retrospective cohort study included 443 female patient
