Autonomic neuropathy is associated with an increase in type-1 cytokines in people living with HIV.

PURPOSE: Pre-clinical studies have demonstrated direct influences of the autonomic nervous system (ANS) on the immune system. However, it remains unclear if ANS-immune connections delineated in these preclinical studies underlie the relationship between autonomic dysregulation and chronic inflammatory diseases in patients with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The aims of this study were: (1) to examine the relationship between interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the parasympathetic/vagal component of baroreflex sensitivity in people with HIV; (2) to determine whether the subtype and severity of HIV-au

Cardiac dysfunctions following spinal cord injury.

The aim of this article is to analyze cardiac dysfunctions occurring after spinal cord injury (SCI). Cardiac dysfunctions are common complications following SCI. Cardiovascular disturbances are the leading causes of morbidity and mortality in both acute and chronic stages of SCI. We reviewed epidemiology of cardiac disturbances after SCI, and neuroanatomy and pathophysiology of autonomic nervous system, sympathetic and parasympathetic. SCI causes disruption of descendent pathways from central control centers to spinal sympathetic neurons, originating into intermediolateral nuclei of T1-L2 spin

Increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic activity rather than changes in hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis activity is associated with metabolic abnormalities.

CONTEXT: Stress is suggested to lead to metabolic dysregulations as clustered in the metabolic syndrome, but the underlying biological mecha … drome or its components. CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that increased sympathetic and decreased parasympathetic nervous system activity is associated with metabolic syndrome, whereas HPA axis activity is not.

Neural mechanisms of atrial fibrillation.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The autonomic nerve system is a potentially potent modulator of the initiation and perpetuation of atrial fibrillation. This review will briefly summarize the neural mechanisms of atrial fibrillation. RECENT FINDINGS: Complex interactions exist between the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous system on the atrial electrophysiologic properties. Direct autonomic recordings in canine models demonstrated simultaneous sympathovagal discharges are the most common triggers of paroxysmal atrial tachycardia and paroxysmal atrial fibrillation. Also, intrinsic cardiac autonomic ner…

Studying the pathophysiologic connection between cardiovascular and nervous systems using stem cells.

The cardiovascular and nervous systems are deeply connected during development, health, and disease. Both systems affect and regulate the de … adapt to various physical and emotional conditions to maintain homeostasis through sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems. Moreover, neurocardiac regulation involves a neuroaxis consisting of cortex, amygdala, and other subcortical structures, which have the ability to modify lower-level neurons in the hierarchy. Does the chronic fatigue syndrome involve the autonomic nervous system?

PURPOSE: To investigate the role of the autonomic nervous system in the symptoms of patients with chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) and delinea … baseline (P < 0.01) and maximum heart rate (HR) on standing and tilting (both P < 0.0001). Tests of parasympathetic nervous system function (the expiratory inspiratory ratio, P < 0.005; maximum minus minimum HR difference, P < 0.05), were significantly less in the CFS group as were measures of sympathetic nervous system function (systolic blood pressure decrease with tilting, P …

An Observational Study of Heart Rate Variability Using Wearable Sensors Provides a Target for Therapeutic Monitoring of Autonomic Dysregulation in Patients with Rett Syndrome.

Rett Syndrome (RTT) is a complex neurodevelopmental disorder that has multi-system involvement with co-occurring epilepsy, breathing problems and autonomic dysregulation. Autonomic dysregulation can increase the risk of cardiorespiratory vulnerability in this patient group. Assessment of heart rate variability (HRV) provides an overview of autonomic health in RTT and offers insight into how the sympathetic and parasympathetic components of the nervous system function. However, to our knowledge, no study has evaluated HRV in Rett patients to assess how the dynamics of autonomic function vary wi

Methyl-CpG binding-protein 2 function in cholinergic neurons mediates cardiac arrhythmogenesis.

Sudden unexpected death occurs in one quarter of deaths in Rett Syndrome (RTT), a neurodevelopmental disorder caused by mutations in Methyl-CpG-binding protein 2 (MECP2). People with RTT show a variety of autonomic nervous system (ANS) abnormalities and mouse models show similar problems including QTc interval prolongation and hypothermia. To explore the role of cardiac problems in sudden death in RTT, we characterized cardiac rhythm in mice lacking Mecp2 function. Male and female mutant mice exhibited spontaneous cardiac rhythm abnormalities including bradycardic events, sinus pauses, atriove

Autonomic function testing: an important diagnostic test for patients with syncope.

Syncope is a common problem with a large differential diagnosis. The initial history and physical examination often provide initial clues; however, some cases warrant further testing to determine the underlying cause. Autonomic function testing is a safe way to evaluate patients with syncope further, and to assess their parasympathetic and sympathetic nervous systems. Autonomic testing can help to diagnose several conditions, including orthostatic hypotension, delayed orthostatic hypotension, postural tachycardia syndrome and neutrally mediated syncope. Thus, when the cause of syncope is uncle

Pure progressive autonomic failure presenting severe orthostatic hypotension.

A 59-year-old woman showed chronic progressive autonomic failure consisting of orthostatic hypotension and dyshidrosis. No signs of Parkinsonism, cerebellar or peripheral neuropathy were observed. Autonomic nervous function tests and findings of biopsied sural nerve suggested that this case had both sympathetic and parasympathetic dysfunctions, mainly postganglionic. A decrease in the total peripheral resistance and no increase in the heart rate on standing seemed to be the mechanism of orthostatic hypotension in this case. We conclude that pure PAF can be recognized as a distinct clinical syn

[The neurovegetative system in heart failure and heart transplantation].

Increased sympathetic activity and plasma levels of norepinephrine, parasympathetic withdrawal and impaired baroreflex gain have been reported in patients with chronic heart failure (CHF). Since excessive neurohormonal activation is implicated in the progression of heart failure, it is crucial to measure and quantify it in clinical practice. Some techniques that may be suitable for this purpose such as catecholamine plasma level assessment or direct recording of the neural efferent activity to the peripheral muscles, require expertise and are very unattractive in terms of cost-effectiveness. Autonomic dysfunction in Parkinson's disease.

Autonomic dysfunction in patients with Parkinson's disease (PD) has been recognized since the original description by James Parkinson in 1817. Autonomic failure can be the clinical presentation of other diseases like pure autonomic failure (PAF) and multiple system atrophy (MSA). Both the central and peripheral autonomic nervous systems can be affected in PD. Rajput and Rozdilsky described cell loss and Lewy bodies within the sympathetic ganglia and antibodies to sympathetic neurons have been detected in PD patients. Lewy bodies can be seen in autonomic regulatory regions, including the hypoth

[Use of central electroanalgesia to restore the body's functional state in motion sickness].

Central electroanalgesia (CEAN) is a technique that involves application of pulsating current to the central nervous system in order to enhance its tonicity recover autonomic equilibrium and to reduce parasympathetic cardiovascular reactions. In two experimental runs in which 9 volunteers participated the efficacy of CEAN in preventing motion sickness symptoms produced by Markaryan's test was studied. After two rotations repeated with a one-hour interval vestibular reactions persisted for 7-10 hours. CEAN had a positive effect: after a one-hour CEAN session applied between two rotations the to

[Effect of autonomic denervation on the secretory function of submandibular glands].

Submandibular gland is innervated by sympathetic and parasympathetic nerves, both of which work synergistically to promote the salivation of the glands. However, denervation does not always produce an inhibitive effect. Regeneration secretion was put forward to describe the situation in which the glands after denervation were found to be supersensitive to the stimulation of several agonists of saliva secretion-related receptors. It is of clinical significance to get a good understanding of the secretory mechanism changes in the autonomically denervated submandibular gland. The present paper ai

Gustatory rhinitis.

Gustatory rhinitis is characterized by watery, uni- or bilateral rhinorrhea occurring after ingestion of solid or liquid foods, most often hot and spicy. It usually begins within a few minutes of ingestion of the implicated food, and is not associated with pruritus, sneezing, nasal congestion or facial pain. It is considered to be a non-immunological reaction. Immunohistological and pharmacological observations suggest that this disease is most likely caused by stimulation of trigeminal sensory nerve endings located at the upper aerodigestive track. Recent evidence suggests that sensory nerve
