Opioid misuse and mental health in college student populations: A national assessment.

BACKGROUND: Despite growing concern about opioid misuse and mental health of college students, little is known about this population who are at high risk of co-occurrence and unmet needs. This national study aims to estimate the prevalence of opioid misuse, examine correlates with anxiety and depression symptoms, and quantify help-seeking behaviors among U.S. college students. METHODS: Data come from students in the Healthy Minds Study between 2017 and 2020 (n = 176,191). Validated screening tools assessed mental health symptoms (PHQ-9, GAD-7). Marginal effects of logistic regression models e

Exploring the Nutrition-Related Health of the Ageing Population in Fiji: A Narrative Review.

Fijis' older population aged 55 years and over makes up 14% of the total population and is expected to reach 20% by 2050. This narrative review aimed to examine the health and nutrition status of the aging population of Fiji and sociodemographic determinants. A search strategy was conducted throughout databases, and gray literature from relevant websites was searched. Due to the limited evidence regarding the nutrition, health, and socio-economic factors that impact the aging population in Fiji the inclusion criteria were broad and included both genders (male and female), all publications up u

Setup of Consumer Wearable Devices for Exposure and Health Monitoring in Population Studies.

Wearable sensors, which are often embedded in commercial smartwatches, allow for continuous and non-invasive health measurements and exposure assessments in clinical studies. Nevertheless, the real-life application of these technologies in studies involving a large number of participants for a significant observation period may be hindered by several practical challenges. In this study, we present a modified protocol from a previous intervention study for the mitigation of health effects from desert dust storms. The study involved two distinct population groups: asthmatic children aged 6-11 ye

Sexual health challenges in migrant, immigrant, and displaced populations 2022-2023.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This article reviews recently published research on sexual health challenges and HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) among migrant, immigrant and displaced people (MIDP) worldwide. We aimed to identify current evidence gaps regarding HIV/STI epidemiology, sexual health needs and interventions. RECENT FINDINGS: Incidence and prevalence of HIV, hepatitis B virus, hepatitis C virus and syphilis were higher among MIDP compared to host populations. However, research studies are limited in geographical distribution and few routine surveillance data are collected. Barri

Alternatives to low birthweight as a population-level indicator of infant and child health.

BACKGROUND: Low birthweight (<2500 g) is often used as a population-level indicator of maternal-child health, as it is easy to measure and correlates with poorer infant health outcomes. However, it conflates preterm birth and intrauterine growth restriction, which have different causal pathways and require different approaches to prevention. Small for gestational age (SGA) (a proxy for growth restriction) and preterm birth may be more informative measures. We evaluated low birthweight as a population-level indicator. METHODS: We conducted a population-based cohort study of singleton live birt

The structure of mental health symptoms in Huntington's disease: Comparisons with healthy populations.

INTRODUCTION: Mental health difficulties are common among people with Huntington's disease (HD). However, such difficulties are only weakly associated with HD progression, suggesting their causes may be multifactorial rather than purely disease-related. Genetically unaffected family members have been shown to experience similar levels of mental distress to people with HD, potentially due to systemic stressors and life disruption. These factors may also influence mental wellbeing in people with HD. Accordingly, this study aimed to compare patterns and occurrence of mental distress between peopl

Strongyloides genotyping: a review of methods and application in public health and population genetics.

Strongyloidiasis represents a major medical and veterinary helminthic disease. Human infection is caused by Strongyloides stercoralis, Strongyloides fuelleborni fuelleborni and Strongyloides fuelleborni kellyi, with S.stercoralis accounting for the majority of cases. Strongyloides f. fuelleborni likely represents a zoonosis acquired from non-human primates (NHPs), while no animal reservoir for S. f. kellyi infection has been found. Whether S. stercoralis represents a zoonosis acquired from dogs and cats remains unanswered. Over the past two decades various tools have been applied to genotype S

Epidemiology and health outcomes of sarcoidosis in a universal healthcare population: a cohort study.

Sarcoidosis-related mortality appears to be rising in North America, with increasing rates in females and the elderly. We aimed to estimate trends in sarcoidosis incidence, prevalence and mortality in Ontario, Canada. We performed a cohort study using health administrative data from Ontario between 1996 and 2015. International Classification of Diseases and Ontario Health Insurance Plan codes were used for case detection. Three disease definitions were created: 1) sarcoidosis, two or more physician claims within 2 years; 2) chronic sarcoidosis, five or more physician claims within 3 years; and

Education and Health Conditions among the Currently Incarcerated and the Non-Incarcerated Populations.

Previous research has found a strong link between educational attainment and health, where the highly educated live longer and healthier lives than those with lower levels of education. Because such research has relied on samples of the non-institutionalized population, previous research has not explored the association between education and specific chronic and infectious health conditions among the currently incarcerated. Analyzing the relationship between education and health conditions among the incarcerated, whom tend to be less healthy and for whom many of the intermediate mechanisms bet

Cement plant emissions and health effects in the general population: a systematic review.

Adverse health effects of cement plant exposure have been found in occupational contexts but are less defined for the general population living near plants. We aimed to summarize the evidence on the health effects of people exposed to ambient air pollution by cement plants. A systematic review using Embase, PubMed and Web of Science was performed. We included only non-occupational studies with a comparison group that focused on adverse health outcomes and biomarkers of internal dose or subclinical effect associated with cement plant exposure. Selection of articles was performed by two authors
