Biomechanical behavior of the three-dimensionally printed surgical plates for mandibular defect reconstruction: a finite element analysis.

The aim of the study was to investigate the biomechanical behavior of three-dimensionally (3D)-printed surgical plates used for mandibular defect reconstruction, compare them with conventional surgical plates, and provide experimental evidence for their clinical application. Three-dimensional models were created for the normal mandible and for mandibular body defects reconstructed using free fibula and deep circumflex iliac artery flaps. Three-dimensional finite element models of reconstructed mandibles fixed using 3D-printed and conventional surgical plates were established. Vertical occlusal

Volatile Compound Emissions from Stereolithography Three-Dimensional Printed Cured Resin Models for Biomedical Applications.

Stereolithography three-dimensional printing is used increasingly in biomedical applications to create components for use in healthcare and therapy. The exposure of patients to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) emitted from cured resins represents an element of concern in such applications. Here, we investigate the biocompatibility in relation to inhalation exposure of volatile emissions of three different cured commercial resins for use in printing a mouthpiece adapter for sampling exhaled breath. VOC emission rates were estimated based on direct analysis using a microchamber/thermal extracto

Three-Dimensional Printed Cage in Patients With Tibiotalocalcaneal Arthrodesis Using a Retrograde Intramedullary Nail: Early Outcomes.

Introduction. Segmental bone loss in the hindfoot hinders the chance of successful outcomes. Tibiotalocalcaneal arthrodesis is a reliable option; nevertheless, the risk of nonunion is high. Three-dimensional (3D) printed titanium implants offer a strong scaffold that can be customized and has demonstrated encouraging healing rates. In this study, we described the clinical outcomes and the radiologic union rate of a case series of patients with hindfoot arthrodesis, using a retrograde intramedullary nail associated to a 3D printed titanium cage. Methods. Seven patients undergoing hindfoot arthr

Three-dimensional printed model of bilateral Wilms tumor: A useful tool for planning nephron sparing surgery.

Nephron sparing surgery (NSS) is increasingly utilized to treat patients with bilateral Wilms tumor. We present a case of NSS planning using a three-dimensional computerized and printed model of both kidneys with anatomical structures of interest (parenchyma, renal pelvis, major calyx, renal artery, renal vein, and tumor). This model allowed a better understanding of the anatomic relation between the tumor and the normal kidney on each side, improving the surgical planning and the preoperative discussion with the patient's family.

Three-dimensionally printed personalized guide plate for percutaneous radiofrequency thermal coagulation in idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia.

Radiofrequency thermocoagulation (RFT) is used widely for the treatment of idiopathic trigeminal neuralgia (TN). Precise puncture and placement of the electrode needle tip are crucial for successful RFT. This technical note introduces a novel method for performing RFT using a customized, three-dimensionally (3D)-printed guide plate. Eleven patients with idiopathic TN were treated using this method between February and July 2016. Three had V2 branch TN and eight had V3 branch TN. Punctures in eight patients were successful at the first attempt; slight adjustments were required subsequently in t
