Experiences of Women Prescribed Methadone.

BACKGROUND: There is a need for women-focused opioid use disorder (OUD) interventions. While methadone is a first-line treatment for OUD, there can be challenges with access and painful side effects. OBJECTIVES: This study's aims were to 1.) learn about the experiences of women taking methadone, 2.) explore women's familiarity with mindfulness (a promising framework to cope with the stressors associated with OUD and taking methadone) and 3.) develop a support group curriculum. RESULTS: Four focus groups took place (N = 19). The qualitative analysis elucidated the complexities of taking metha

Reasons for attending support groups and organizational preferences: the European scleroderma support group members survey.

PURPOSE: The objectives were to identify reasons why patients attend scleroderma support groups and to ascertain preferences for how meetings are best organized. METHODS: The survey included 30-items on reasons for attending and nine items on organizational preferences. Patients were recruited through European patient organizations. Exploratory factor analysis was used to group reasons for attendance thematically. RESULTS: About 213 scleroderma patients (192 women) completed the survey. A three-factor model best described reasons for attending [χ2(348) = 586.1, p < 0.001; Comparative Fit Ind

Who helps the leaders? Difficulties experienced by cancer support group leaders.

GOALS OF WORK: Cancer support groups are an important source of support for cancer patients, yet little is known about the challenges and training needs of both professionally trained and untrained leaders. The aim of this study was to discover the difficulties experienced and training desired by cancer support group leaders. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Twenty-seven leaders of 34 cancer support groups participated in focus groups or individual interviews. Groups were purposively selected as representative of 173 support groups identified in New South Wales which were for adults with cancer and/or t

Breast cancer survivors' perspectives on whether clinical staff should ask breast cancer patients about childhood abuse.

INTRODUCTION: Recent studies have shown that women who recall childhood abuse are at increased risk of emotional problems following a breast cancer diagnosis. How services should respond is unclear given the risk of compounding the emotional trauma of cancer with questioning about abuse. Our aim was to present the research findings to women with experience of breast cancer so as to obtain their perspective on how this evidence should influence clinical practice. METHODS: Participants were women who had been treated for breast cancer at one of the study units and women with a history of breast

Trichotillomania: women's reports of treatment efficacy.

Trichotillomania (TTM) is an enigmatic disease characterized by an overwhelming compulsion to pull out one's hair, most notably scalp hair, but also eyebrows, eyelashes, and hair from the extremity, axillary, and pubic areas. Current estimates are that clinically significant hair pulling is manifested by 3.4% of all women during their lifetimes. The overall purpose of our study was to examine the efficacy of a wide variety of treatments as perceived by the women (N=44) who received them. The data were subjected to content analysis and are presented in a quantified manner. Common forms of treat

Helping patients cope with chronic alopecia areata.

Helping a patient cope with a frustrating and unpredictable disease like alopecia areata can be a difficult task for many dermatology nurses. Five dermatology nurses who practice in the United States and Canada say that one important resource that should not be overlooked during the course of treatment of alopecia areata is the patient support group. Another major resource is the referral of patients to the National Alopecia Areata Foundation, which coordinates the patient support groups.

Who Are the Anonymous? Involvement and Predictors of Gamblers Anonymous Attendance Among Disordered Gamblers Presenting for Treatment.

Gamblers Anonymous is the most widely available form of support for disordered gambling. Although chapters exist worldwide, knowledge of how attendees interact with the program is limited. The present study aimed to investigate involvement in Gamblers Anonymous among attendees, motives for attendance, and overall satisfaction with the program. Furthermore, potential gambling-related predictors of attendance versus deciding not to attend Gamblers Anonymous were investigated. A treatment-seeking sample of disordered gamblers (N = 512) from São Paulo, Brazil completed a series of self-report meas

Utility and Efficacy of a Virtual Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus Support Group.

OBJECTIVE: Normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH) is a neurodegenerative process for which our team previously demonstrated the efficacy of an in-person NPH support group. However, in this study, we aimed to examine the educational benefits and efficacy of a virtual NPH support group. METHODS: Monthly virtual meetings were held from July 2022 to June 2023 for NPH patients and their friends/families. The format of each meeting consisted of a physician-led presentation, question and answer sessions, group discussions, and polls to evaluate the meeting. The survey included questions to gather parti

Narrating dementia: self and community in an online forum.

In this article, I examine how individuals diagnosed with early-onset Alzheimer's disease use illness narratives to construct community. The ability to narrate is a fundamental component of the self. Using 354 posts by 32 members of an Internet forum, I argue that people with Alzheimer's, whose ability to narrate, and thus create a self, was compromised, nonetheless managed to tell stories of redemption out of which a salvaged self emerged. Narratives are essential for the construction of self, but as I show in this article, they are also essential for the construction of community. Forum memb

An observation of lower rates of drug use over time in community syringe exchangers.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The present study evaluated changes in rates of self-reported heroin and cocaine use in opioid-dependent individuals newly registered to a syringe exchange program (SEP), and examined the effects of recovery-oriented longitudinal variables (i.e., substance abuse treatment, self-help group participation, employment) on changes in drug use. METHODS: Study participants (n = 240) were opioid-dependent and drawn from a larger study evaluating strategies to improve treatment-seeking. Mixed model analyses were used to evaluate changes in rates of heroin and cocaine use, an

Understanding how education/support groups help lone mothers.

BACKGROUND: Lone-mother led families are at increased risk of psychosocial disadvantage, social isolation and mental health morbidity. Community-based programs are more accessible for families seeking assistance. We examine the experiences of eight lone mothers participating in a larger randomized controlled trial (RCT) of a community-based education/support group program using mixed methods. METHODS: A purposeful sample of eight mothers participating in the intervention arm of an RCT of community-based support/education groups was selected for the qualitative study. Manifest sadomasochism of males: results of an empirical study.

Two hundred forty-five manifestly sadomasochistic West German completed an anonymous questionnaires concerning their sexual behavior and psychosocial problems. They were reached as placers of sadomasochistic contact advertisements or as members of sadomasochistic clubs. Thirty percent were exclusively heterosexually oriented, 31% bisexually oriented, and 38% homosexually oriented. Results are described with respect to the invisibility of deviant behavior, seeking of partners, participation in the subculture, realization of the deviant desires, self-acceptance, preferences for sadomasochistic r

Black Low-Income Mothers' Experiences With a Local Peer Support Group: A Qualitative Exploration.

Maternal empowerment, particularly by enhancing resourcefulness and support systems, has emerged as a promising approach to address inequities. The aim of this study was to explore the lived experiences of Black low-income women during the postpartum period and the interplay between cultural context, resourcefulness, and motherhood. The study employed a novel methodological approach that combined focused ethnography with grounded theory analysis. Six focus groups (n = 35) were conducted with Black mothers who had given birth within 5 years and were self-identified as low-income. Data analysis

A longitudinal study of the comparative efficacy of Women for Sobriety, LifeRing, SMART Recovery, and 12-step groups for those with AUD.

BACKGROUND: Despite the effectiveness of 12-step groups, most people reporting a prior alcohol use disorder (AUD) do not sustain involvement in such groups at beneficial levels. This highlights the need for research on other mutual help groups that address alcohol problems and may attract those who avoid 12-step groups. The current study addresses this need, offering outcome data from the first longitudinal, comparative study of 12-step groups and their alternatives: The Peer ALlternatives for Addiction (PAL) Study. METHODS: Adults with a lifetime AUD were surveyed at baseline (N=647), 6month

Breaking the web of abuse and silence: voices of battered women in Japan.

This article presents the findings of a focus group research project with battered women in Tokyo, Japan. Participants' narratives of their experience with their partners' violence suggest a web of entrapment, from which women saw little possibility of escape. The partners' physical violence, interference with the women's social participation, isolation from supportive networks, and degradation and debasement entrapped participants. The victim-blaming attitudes of family, friends, and professionals, as well as the lack of assistance programs and police protection often reinforced the web. When

Multi-Modal Sensoriality and Online Community-Based Support in the Long Covid Choir.

Long covid involves diverse chronic physical and cognitive symptoms with poorly understood mechanisms and limited treatment options. Many affected individuals turn to community groups for support. Drawing on ethnographic research with the Long Covid Choir, a patient-run online singing and support group, in this paper I examine how participants use overlapping sensory experiences to cultivate belonging, foster biosocial solidarity, structure care, and counter isolation. Through shared auditory and visual practices - collective breathing, guided mindfulness, and gentle stretching - the choir cul

Bereavement Groups for Parents Who Have Lost a Child: A Qualitative Study of Parental Experiences in a Danish Context.

BACKGROUND: Bereavement support for families experiencing the loss of a child is a crucial aspect of Specialized Paediatric Palliative Care (SPPC). As an offering of SPPC, bereavement groups have the potential to provide meaningful support. Limited research, however, exists considering parents' direct experiences of these groups and considerations for how to approach them in a Scandinavian context. AIM: To explore parents' experiences of bereavement support groups to explicate thematic priorities that speak to the design, facilitation, and other practical considerations for delivering these g

User acceptability and perceived impact of a mobile interactive education and support group intervention to improve postnatal health care in northern India: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Postnatal care, crucial for preventing and assessing complications after birth, remains low in India. An interactive mHealth community-based postnatal intervention was implemented to promote healthy maternal behaviors through knowledge and social support in rural Northern India. However, there is limited information on how virtual health interventions in resource-constrained settings are perceived by the users and which elements influence their engagement and sustained participation. OBJECTIVE: We explored the user perceptions of acceptability and impact of a virtual interactive m

Identification of needs for an assistive robotic arm in individuals with tetraplegia: a mixed-methods approach.

BACKGROUND: A severe spinal cord injury (SCI) can profoundly affect an individual's physical abilities and social independence. For individuals living with tetraplegia, an assistive robotic arm offers the potential to restore some autonomy and reduce the need for constant assistance. However, current assistive technologies are often costly, impractical, and fail to meet the needs of those affected. This leads to high rates of abandonment and user frustration with the technology. The aim of this study was to identify the needs and expectations of both individuals with tetraplegia and their care
