BACKGROUND: Internet gaming disorder (IGD) has become a social problem in children. Evidence from previous studies has proven that anxiety is associated with IGD. However, IGD was always assessed as a whole based on total scores, and the fine-grained relationship between anxiety and IGD was hidden.
OBJECTIVE: The present study aims to investigate the fine-grained relationship between anxiety and IGD in elementary school students during the COVID-19 lockdown, and to identify potential targets for psychological interventions.
METHODS: During the lockdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, 667 ch

BACKGROUND: Hearing-impaired college students face limitations in auditory and verbal communication, placing them at higher risk for mental health problems. While previous studies have mostly used traditional structural equation models to examine the relationship between discrimination perception and psychological adaptation issues, these approaches have difficulty capturing complex nonlinear associations and dynamic interactions between variables. This study adopted a network analysis perspective to explore the association patterns between discrimination perception, shyness, and alexithymia a

BACKGROUND: Children are experiencing high levels of loneliness and mental health problems around the globe, with those from underserved communities being affected disproportionately. Group dance programmes, which facilitate social connections and wellbeing, can buffer against loneliness. However, we know little about the mechanisms behind the effectiveness of these programmes and their long-term and group-level effects. This study examined whether it is mere engagement in group dance or better individual dance performance that fosters social connections and wellbeing.

In this study, we used Andersen's Behavioral Model with the family as a unit of analysis to examine the patterns of awareness and utilization of social services by families with at least one adult with intellectual disabilities. Face-to-face interview questionnaires were conducted with primary family caregivers in Hsinchu City, Taiwan in 2004. Data were collected on adults' and caregivers' predisposing, enabling, and need variables as well as awareness and utilization of formal social services. A total of 792 interviews were completed, making a response rate of 94.2%. Multivariate logistic reg

BACKGROUND: Pain empathy represents a fundamental building block of several social functions, which have been demonstrated to be impaired across various mental disorders by accumulating evidence from case-control functional magnetic resonance imaging studies. However, it remains unclear whether the dysregulations are underpinned by robust neural alterations across mental disorders.
METHODS: This study utilized coordinate-based meta-analyses to quantitatively determine robust markers of altered pain empathy across mental disorders. To support the interpretation of the findings, exploratory net

BACKGROUND: Previous studies have found that people with low participation in social activities and living alone were prone to have risky sexual behaviors, while people with high participation in social activities were less prone to have risky sexual behaviors. Based on the above assumptions, we conducted an analysis on elderly population's social networks and human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) risky behaviors in China. In the survey study, considering the sensitivity of sexual behavior, HIV risk behavior of the elderly population is more difficult to measure, so the intermediate variable of H

As the epidemiological landscape of HIV/AIDS changed over the last 40 years, more people are now living with HIV/AIDS deeper into senior adulthood. People over age 50 living with HIV face myriad challenges including medical, psychological, and social comorbidities. In this analysis, we consider the social realities and social networks of older adults living with HIV and assess how relationships and communities have been affected by stigma and other challenges of aging with HIV. A total of 40 participants, ages 51-69 years, living with HIV in the Newark metropolitan area were interviewed. A the

Various theoretical and empirical studies have accounted for why humans cooperate in competitive environments. Although prior work has revealed that network structure and multiplex interactions can promote cooperation, most theory assumes that individuals play dilemma games in all social contexts. However, real-world agents may participate in a diversity of interactions, not all of which present dilemmas. We develop an evolutionary game model on multilayer networks in which one layer supports the prisoner's dilemma game, while the other follows constant-selection dynamics, representing biased

BACKGROUND: We examined whether standardized test scores and grades are related to risky behaviors among low-income minority adolescents and whether social networks and social-emotional factors explained those relationships.
METHODS: We analyzed data from 929 high school students exposed by natural experiment to high- or low-performing academic environments in Los Angeles. We collected information on grade point average (GPA), substance use, sexual behaviors, participation in fights, and carrying a weapon from face-to-face interviews and obtained California math and English standardized test

Although strong evidence links social connectedness to improved fitness, there is pronounced among-individual variation in social behaviour. This variation may be maintained if different types of social relationships (i.e. having many versus strongly connected partners) have environment-dependent fitness benefits, but this has rarely been tested. We applied network analysis to 37 years of social association data in female Soay sheep to test the relative importance of relationship quantity (mean group size, network degree and participation coefficient) and quality (mean strength and social diff

INTRODUCTION: Loneliness and adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) constitute significant risk factors for mental disorders, with loneliness emerging as a serious global public health concern. Recent research highlights the role of loneliness as a potential link between early life adversities and current psychopathology. However, most studies have been conducted in high-income, highly individualistic countries. This cross-sectional study explores the interplay between loneliness, social network size, recalled ACEs and depressive symptoms in Ethiopia-a low-income and collectivistic cultural cont

BACKGROUND: Ample evidence supported that childhood trauma and family environment are closely linked to adolescent depression. This study aimed to establish a network of childhood trauma, family environment and depressive symptoms among adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD), and to identify the central and bridge symptoms in the network.
METHODS: A total of 560 adolescents diagnosed with MDD were included in the present study. The Children's Depression Inventory (CDI), the Chinese version of the Childhood Trauma Questionnaire-Short Form (CTQ-SF), and the Family Environment Scale-Ch

Social factors are consequences and determinants of chronic pain, yet little is known about how informal social support operates for people with chronic pain and HIV. The overlapping burdens of emotional distress and chronic pain in people living with HIV raise the need to identify targets for culturally resonant treatments. This qualitative study explored how people living with chronic or recurrent pain and HIV seek informal social support for pain and distress from their social networks, how these networks operate, and how social support is influenced by socio-ecological factors. Adults with

Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is characterized by over-reactivity of fear-related circuits in social or performance situations and associated with marked social impairment. We used dynamic causal modeling (DCM), a method to evaluate effective connectivity, to test our hypothesis that SAD patients would exhibit dysfunctions in the amygdala-prefrontal emotion regulation network. Thirteen unmedicated SAD patients and 13 matched healthy controls performed a series of facial emotion and object discrimination tasks while undergoing fMRI. The emotion-processing network was identified by a task-relate
